I find that using Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender keeps me spyware free.

It also has a "reboot-delete" function, that deletes the file before the OS runs it - handy for those self-replicating POS files you can never seem to get rid of.... and yeah - if there's something specific that's happening, there's usually a specific "recipe" you can find on how to clear it out - just searching for words in your popups will usually lead you somewhere good....
