Unlock Thoughts
Here's another 'thoughts' thread. I've already made a 'mistake' or two in the unlocks I've picked. Not that the unlocks are bad, just not really useful given what other unlocks I've already taken. So, for anybody considering picking up things in the recon unlock tree, here are my impressions on the unlocks I've got so far. And feel free to post your impressions of the unlocks you've taken. Hopefully we can advance through the game a little wiser from each other's experiences.
RDX (Level 1 spec-ops unlock) Item slot 2142's C4. It looks a bit like C4, it blows up like C4. I haven't noticed it being any more powerful than C4 particularly. Fastest way to take out a Titan's consoles or core are with this though; 5 C4s on a console and it's down, reload and move onto the next. APM: Anti-Personel Mine (level 1 sniper unlock) Item slot It's a claymore from BF2. But I've found that since 1. you aren't obviously a sniper like you are in BF2, 2. not everybody playing is going to be carrying it, and 3. there's more ground cover on the maps, it's not expected as much and it's easier to hide. Plus the mine warning indicator isn't as obvious. I've gotten a few kills using these as booby traps when they would have been noticed in BF2. Still, I'm not convinced it's really worthwhile carrying these, since they take up one of your two item slots. If you have it, RDX is the better choice for the discerning explosives maniac. DysTek Hi-Scope x4 (Level 2 sniper unlock) Scope slot It's a 4x scope for your weapon. You can zoom in much further than with the default scope and you can zoom in and out with the mouse wheel. This isn't strictly necessary since the big limitation on sniping tends to be that zooming in doesn't increase your draw distance. The other downside is that changing between zoom levels is a little slow. This scope also has a built-in rangefinder, not sure if the normal one does too. Gruber 5 Stabilizer (Level 3 sniper unlock) Item slot Don't leave home without it. Sniper rifles in 2142 have laser accuracy, which takes away the head-scratching 'I know I should have hit him' you sometimes get in BF2, but gives you sway to deal with instead. This is very handy for dealing with those ultra-long range shots, and makes you lethal all the way out to the edge of your draw distance when combined with the 4x scope. Zeller-H Advanced Sniper Rifle (Sniper rifle unlock) Weapon slot Hide. This is the Big gun. I like my big gun. This gun will splat your brains out from the other side of the map. If you aren't wearing heavy armor, this weapon is a one shot kill. If you are wearing heavy armor, you certainly aren't going to survive a second shot, a short fall, or a butterfly flapping its wings at you. You don't lose your scope between shots, but it takes about a second to reload so if you've got one shot off and the other guy is close it's sometimes best just to whip out your pistol and finish him off that way. The other thing about this gun is the sway is very minimal and it has almost no recoil; you won't need your stabilizer for anything but the hardest shots. Watch your ammo though- it always seems to need reloading at the most inopportune moments. |

My thoughts on my unlocks.
Herzog Shotgun Attachment for Assault- 1st Teir, Left Side. Not that great but essencial if you want to get to the good stuff. One shot point blank will kill a guy, but if your any further away your SOL with this attachment, it also dosnt help that it only has 3 shots and shares ammo with the PK-74 AR-Rocket. PK-74 AR- Rocket Attachment for Assault - 3rd Teir, Left Side If you like being assault but not medic, this is where its at for assault unlocks. 3 shots, all you do is range find this baby (right click at a wall near the enemy) and fire off a couple rounds and they will explode right next to them. If they dont move and your range isnt off a full salvo (3 rockets) is a guarneteed kill. Baur H-AR for Assault - 4th Teir, Left Side I havnt been able to really test this out dmg wise compaired to the stock AR's so not much I can tell you here other then it looks cool. V5 EMP Grenade for Support - 1st Teir, Left Side I hardly ever use this, but when i do it sure comes in handy. Makes it very nice to disable enemy vehicles so you can make away on foot. Not much else to say about this unlock. A12 Enforcer Sentry Gun for Support - 3rd Teir, Left Side One of my most favorite unlocks, makes for easy titan console defend, auto aquires targets, can see through cloak and generaly rocks. They have toned it down and made it easier to kill, but they have also made it so that you can get another from ammo crates. Ganz HMG for Support - 4th Teir, Left Side While i dont have this in the full game I did have it in the beta, so the feedback I have now for this weapon is dated, feel free to update this if need be. Another good unlock, while the basice Support weapons are great, this weapon is still a great upgrade. During beta this weapon would fire longer and maintain a smaller cone of fire for longer after you stopped firing. APM for Recon - 1st Teir, Left Side Another one I hardly use, but can see myself using after I get the better scope and stabilizer, so I cant say much about it. It does have a cool animation when you pull it out though. lol Well there is my long winded thoughts to the unlocks that I have gotten. I hope you guys find this useful. |

EMP nades are indespensible. When defending and you see armor rollin in...SPAM IT! It wont be able to move for a good while if you use all your nades and itll be easy pickings for your ATs.
Sentry gun is great at defnding if you can find a nice little hiding place for it to cover a known route. You could babysit it to make it last longer but you can always lay another one down if it gets destroyed. The support's upgrade to the net bat is the bane of every cloaker. Youll get many people saying "how the hell did you see me? hacker!!" until they realize once you cloak in range of a support soldier that has this, hell show up on that squads net bat for all to see The Ganz HMG is a great gun. Not sure if its more powerful than the stocks but it seems to over heat less fast. It does have a lower ammo count though which prollly means it has a wee more power. EMP mines are great for defendign flags. Spread em all out, and wait. Your own team doesnt seem to trigger these which is a good thing as we all know how annoying that can be. Combine these with a supports EMP nade and its just armor ownage the AE defuser is prolly the least thing used in the engy's kit. I know ive never used it once. The only thing i could see it being useful for is if you attacking a flag and theres some RDX on it. You can just defuse them. The PDS thingy for the Engy is AWESOME for flag defense. Its nice and small and you can stick it anywhere incluing vehicles. Basically its like a UAV for vehicles. Stick it somewhere where its not gonna be found and youll have ample warning of any and all vehicles coming your way. A must for the defending Engineer. The heavy AT weapon is amazing. One hit to the critical rear parts of tanks puts em on fire if not kills them altogether. You cant guide the missile but the damage more than makes up for it. More of a short range amush weapon. Great great gun. Havent used much else but i know Bhack can fill ya in on the SL unlocks. |

Snail, I think I already asked you this, but does that PDS show vehicles on the minimap or just add them to your netbat?
I have all of the SL unlocks. The Gun drone sucks. I'll use it more to be sure, but its effectiveness seems limited. Actually, it would probably be much more helpful on smaller, infantry only maps. The recon drone is actually pretty damn cool. It just auto spots everything around you, effective but like the gun drone, you get that big thing hovering over your head so its not exactly easy to hide. The beacon is, of course, quite useful. On defense you'd probably want to grab the recon drone, but on offense the beacon is a better choice. Remember, you can only carry one of the SL tools at any given time.

Smoke Grenades: You now get 2 of them and they explode on impact. That makes them better for recovering downed Squad Leaders since you don't have to waste time waiting for them to go off. On the Titan throw them down the halls. The defenders will usualy start shooting blindly so you just wait until they're reloading to rush them. If they don't shoot rush the console. If you can reach them put the smoke grenade right on top of the defenders so they have to come out of their cover to see you. If they don't come out of their cover use the smoke to conceal some grenades.

I think everyone and their Sister has all the Medic unlocks. I think that's a popular one.
NOTE ON EMP GRENADES: I didn't read it here, and I don't have them but they are supposed to disable cloaked Recons.
