Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat makes an appearance!

Tactical Gamer has decided to bring back Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat for one night only!

Event: Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat
Location: Tactical Gamer Community & Events server (70.84.146.202)
When: Monday, December 18th @ 8pm Eastern
What to bring: Your 'A' game. And for those BF2 players that are too young to remember BF1942, we'll accept your 'C' game.

Some of you may remember the glory days of Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat. Some of you may even have played BFDC at Tactical Gamer.

Dig through those old CDs and crack open that BF1942 jewel case. Carefully insert said CDs into that CD/DVD drive of yours and click install. Wait patiently as these old fellas tend to be more finicky than a cat. Locate and install the latest BF1942 patches, and then finally download and install the latest Desert Combat modification.

Let's find out who still has the skill to operate those infamous Desert Combat helicopters. Who remembers how to navigate the caverns of Gazala? Who dares to drive a tank across the desert of El Alamein?

If that isn't enticing enough, we will have a guest appearance by chopper pilot Apophis. Anyone recognize that name? There will be bonus points for anyone that can take him down with a stinger.

Download & Installation
All of the BF1942 patches and Desert Combat modifications can be found in the member's download section. Here is a list of mirrors for for those that do not have access:

Note: All files should be installed in the following order.

BF1942 Patches
1) BF1942 v1.6.19 (fileplanet)
2) BF1942 v1.6.19-v1.61b (incremental) (EA)

Desert Combat
3) DC 0.7 Full (fileplanet)
4) DC Final (fileplanet)

Make sure to download and install all of the patches prior to this event. You wouldn't want to miss out!

About Battlefield 1942 & Desert Combat
Battlefield 1942 was a game that redefined first person shooter games. Not long after its release, Trauma Studios developed a mod called Desert Combat. This mod helped to keep BF1942 alive much longer than anticipated.

Trauma Studios was acquired by DICE back in September 2004, which was later acquired by EA. The Trauma Studios team was eventually let go by EA.

Desert Combat was a modern day warfare modification for the BF1942 engine. The mod was never completed by the Trauma Studio's team, however several of the developers that were not a part of this acquisition put out one more release polishing up the mod. This acquisition paved the way for Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2: Modern Warfare (for consoles). I'm sure many of you are familiar with BF2.

Luckly I still have it all in order for that event but I probabably wouldn;t have re-installed everything for the one night, is there enough interest from the rest of you guys to play DC some more often? If so what are the chances of us having a place for TG (server)?

I would definitely like to play more often than one night. But this was just the event to kick off that interest. So get re-installing!

BF2 was the first Battlefield game for me...For those like me who are on the fence...what does BF Desert Combat offer that BF2 does not.

Well actually BF2 was my first expierence as well Grunt and I just was wondering around Best BUy one day looking at games and decided to get it since you can get the whole Battlefield Anthology which inclides of course 1942 and the 2 expansion Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WWII and also the stand alone BF Vietnam. You can't beat that for $20. I'm not gonna lie it is a step down obviously from BF2 as would almost any game would be BUT the Desert Combat mod is AWESOME and brings the modern day combat to 1942. Different maps and the game play is of course not a sophisticated but always a great change. If your like me, I don;t like to just get stuck on one game I bounce back and forth even within a day. But like I said if you don;t have it, it is definitly worth only 20 beans (dollars). And for those of you who do have it and wanna start gettin back into the DC groove I will be server surfing now till then so if you wanna get together and play let me know or add me if you use xfire (rookie3)

Just like Rookie, I picked up the anthology a little while back, but never really got into it. There are plenty of older games I still play, but they're usually ones I started playing when they were new, or there's something special that keeps me playing them (like TG). Hopefully we can get a few nights organized so I can see what I missed back then

A better game :P

DC is just different, was really the best mod for BF1942. Has alot of great changes and adds a hole new dimension to the game. for 10bucks i think its well worth it.

What does DC have that neither BF2 or BF2142 has?

A kick-ass artillery system. You actually have to USE the artillery and have a spotter out in the field calling in targets. Say hello to my MLRS!

Additionally, I've been known to be pretty lethal in the AH64. I don't get the opportunity to fly in BF2/2142 very much, but it was my specialty in DC. Well, as long as asch wasn't around with his stinger missiles ripping me out of the sky. That guy is lethal with those things.

I really would like to play this more often. We've talked about it in the forums before, but this event is just an official date to get together and see how much interest we can re-kindle in this game!

Ok I'm sold...

We should plan something out for TeamSpeak communication since BF1942 didn't have VOIP.

One thing I miss from DC were the great maps and CTF game mode.

Not much to plan really, just be on TeamSpeak and hop in the appropriate channel. We recommend the same even for games that have built-in VoIP!
