Put Your Knife Away and Take The Kill

OK, I am officially going to go nuclear on the next guy who passes up a perfect opportunity to take a straight forward rifle kill in a hot zone in order to pick up a dog tag.

Let me tell you the view from my direction:

I see an enemy hiding behind crates about 20m away. I throw a grenade into his little hole and as soon as I see it fly off, my team mate runs in from the side of my view and jumps on him to pick up the knife kill. But no, my grenade kills both of you and I get yet another stupid team kill and you get to wait 15 seconds. You saw him standing there, you had your gun out, you could have even happily stolen my nade kill, but instead your eyes lit up, you started foaming at the mouth and jammed your hand down your pants as you went for a melee weapon in what can only be described as a cluster you-know-what.

How about another:

We run up behind a guy, again about 20m away facing away from us. I switch to semi-auto on my rifle and zoom in to cap him. Then some genius runs in front of me with a knife to stab him in the back. Unsurprisingly, I hold fire to avoid friendly fire. However, our target can hear your pre-pubescent panting from 10m behind him and blasts you in the face. You know what else? Like a chump, I have been sitting there holding fire while he is now halfway through killing you and has already honed his sights on me as well. Since I cannot fire until I am sure you are out of my way, his bullets are already hitting me before I can start returning fire. Now you're dead, I'm dead, our position is compromised and I want to question the morons who decided it would be a good idea to breed and bring you into the world to ruin my futile attempt at entertainment by playing this game.

Last one:

I have a tank. It's a sturdy tank. I am good at using it and it's damn hard to kill. Three of my enemies are cowering behind a crate because they can see me lining them up. I could probably take out all three of them with a single shot by hitting the wall behind them. Hypothetically, you could be trying to cap that flag we want while I stand off in the tank to provide heavy support and keep their heads down. No. You are convinced you can shank all three better and faster than my single shell can tear them a new one. News flash Sherlock, once I fire that shell, I can't take it back. It's now arcing towards those poor souls and inconveniently at your snotty stab-crazy arse as well. Sure, they're dead, but now so are you. Those -3 points have negated any score I gained from the 3 kills and now we have one less body on the flag. Those three guys I killed now have ample time to respawn as Engineers and blast me into oblivion. Where's your knife to save the day now Steven Seagal?

Don't be an idiot. A knife is for stealth or a last resort when out of ammo. Using melee weapons in a hot zone makes baby Jesus cry.

Re: Put Your Knife Away and Take The Kill

I hate people like that, and have blasted many away. Only time I ever use my knife is on the commander. But I have done a few closing in mistakes. I wanted to make sure I could kill him with my assault rifle only to be blown away by a directional mine. So the idiots punish you for team kills when they run up?

Re: Put Your Knife Away and Take The Kill

I've been known to stab an enemy or two (or three or four) in my days in bf2, but Bomm points out a very good point. I've eyewitnessed scenarios like those posed, and it is a total disappointment for everyone. If you really want those tags, head on over to a knifing server. Save those tickets by using your rifles in the hot zones.

Reflecting upon how I usually use knifing...the only really practical scenario is taking out sniper nests when you're the only one there. Then, it's pretty much essential for the silence.

..then again, quickly brushing over them with any assault rifile will probably do, also.

My advice: if you have to think about whether you should try to knife someone, you probably shouldn't even try.

I don't believe I've actually knifed someone recently. It just seems really mean (as opposed to shooting someone in the face, I know), so even if it's an opportunity that I know I would have knifed back when I played BF2, I refrain and just end it quickly and with less emotional torture for the other party. See how much I look after you guys

Re: Put Your Knife Away and Take The Kill

Knifing is bit archaic if you ask me. I may do it alot, but I try to do it when no one else is around me; it's just me and the enemy. There have been instances where I do get a bit over zealous and walked into a grenade or APM going for the knife, but if there's a fight going on around me, I don't want to have a knife out in a firefight.

BTW, nice rib on Steven Seagal.

Re: Put Your Knife Away and Take The Kill

Hey. I was with Bom last night when this was happening (I believe something like 3 teamkills in one round?). As far as I'm concerned, if you see a knife in my hand, it's because 99.9% of the time, I hit the 1 key by accident. I realized, quite some time ago, that I suck with a knife (I suck under normal conditions, using a knife makes it exponentially so). This isn't to say that I haven't used it, but it's a extremely rare occasion (some poor bastard is lagging so bad they haven't moved in a while, or they are AFK. I can only hit them when the don't fight back). Anyway, I really don't think that anyone out there has honed their knife skills to the point that it surpasses their firearms skills.

So, please, keep your knife in your pants where it belongs! (especially if you're thinking of knifing me)

There is nothing wrong with feeling something when you shoot your enemies... as long as that something is recoil.

Re: Put Your Knife Away and Take The Kill

All of my knife kills are either from Snipers or from People manning the AA guns.

This is the second thread that had me cracking up in the office........

You guys are going to get me in trouble

Oh, I totally agree Bomm. I've seen it happen in plenty of other FPS games I played in the past as well: some honky thinks it's gonna be hilarious to knife some guy in the back, and while he's doing that, a teammate (or ME) gets shot dead while he's busy walking up for the kill.

Re: Put Your Knife Away and Take The Kill

I reserve the knife for...
  1. OMG no bullets! situations. Where you've emptied out your magazine and your pistol clip or have an overheated LMG in your hands. If you're close enough (say...5-10yard) you can draw your knife and stab faster then you can reload. Also, at that close you can't really run away either
  2. Solo Stealth kills. Sniper nests comes to mind. Support guys in the rear laying suppression also comes to mind. You can also use the knife to kill people around corners simply because you can prime the attack. It takes about half a second for the knife to hit its mark, so if you start your attack the moment before you turn the corner your target will be dead before they know what hit them. AA/AV guns are also another good place to use knives.
  3. Beacon camping. Its a camper's knife. It skins, it chops, and it even kills people before they can leave the pod. MUCH faster and easier then using your rifle on those sitting ducks.

On a related note, the deviation is so very small for the PAC Takato semi-automatic pistol while using the sights that at ranges of 0-30 (aka CQC) you can kneel, sight, and pop two bullets into someone's head for a 2 shot kill with a little practice. This is MUCH faster then the 3-4 shots needed by the LMG or AR and is handy if you're going though a building. The EU pistol, however, just plain sucks because of the slow ROF.

Re: Put Your Knife Away and Take The Kill

The only time I really kill people with the knife is when they are prone, sniping, or something or when I come up behind them without them seeing me. Although I have killed a few when we were very close quarters and I have to reload or he is reloading, which is cheap I know :P.

Been there done that man. I was stranded behind the line after all my mates bit the dust. Ran into a nest of PAC personnels including a HMG, a sniper and a medic. Found out that my chance of killing them all with a Baur is nil, I donned my shank-man costume, and lord it worked like a charm. They all dead and since it was too fast they didn't have time to check what kind of weapon they have been hit with.

It all come down to timing folks, depend on what the situation is and be appropriate. I have never ever whip my knife out in the vicinity of a squad mate or when I have a rifle worthy of CQC.

Re: Put Your Knife Away and Take The Kill

Everytime I've attempted to use the knife it's been me that's gotten killed. On my last game on Berlin I had this sniper who killed me two times from the same position. So I got fed up, saw that he was still in the same spot, moved behind him and tried to knife him. Problem was I could not get the kill as I kept slashing away. Luckily someone, I believe it was CP, took him out as he was turning around to knife me!

Usually if my knife is in my hands it's because I scrolled to far on my mouse wheel looking for another weapon.

Yea, I hate this. Primary reason my middle mouse button goes to my main gun. And the keys around WASD are set to my pistol and my knife. More precise then trying to scroll to a weapon in the middle of a gunfight.

On that note, is F the default key to change your weapon to the next one? If not, I have it mapped to F, and have memorized how many F pushes it takes to get to each weapon. Although I prefer direct key bindings.

I have actually gotten faster at scrolling to what I need without looking than actually pressing the key bind. It takes me longer to reach the keys up in the 5+ than it does to scroll to the items I want there. With a desent mouse that has a scroll weel with precise clicks when you turn it is quite easy to navigate by memory.
