Question How does Armed Assault play to BF 2 or POE?

How does AA compare to BF 2 or POE? Is it "slower" paced, about the same, more in depth tactically?

I just sort of popped into the AA forum and thought I'd ask as the Battlefield series seems to be the benchmark for multi-player fun.

I've also checked out the AA website and it looks promising and wanted to get impressions from those who have played the overseas version.

Re: How does Armed Assault play to BF 2 or POE?

Ama Is much slower paced, BF2 is pretty much arcade style compared to Ama. Ama is a sim where BF2 is an action game.

There is no bunny hopping in Ama. One-shot-one-kill is common, not the BF2 4 hits to kill BS. If you unload into a guy he goes down. Literally, if you get seriously injured you cant stand up

Ama doesnt have the following that BF2 has, but that doesnt mean Ama is not fun to play.

Team Demo

To survive you need
More communication
more patience
More tactics
more strategy
more teamwork

You can get by with
less twitch

The biggest change is seeing farther and having a lot of room to move around on your assaults and such. Also, the ability to manipulate the environment in a destructive way (get in a tank and you will see what i am talking about.)
If you took to the Tac Mod, you may be o.k.

Feel free to check out the stickys on the Assault forums, with regards to this subject.

I would not call it a sim. There are a lot of things i would consider arcade like.

The random spotting

seeing enemies being spotted on your map

seeing friendlies on your map

As the team leader, you can press space bar and scan with your cross hairs and pick out hidden enemy

Being able to see who you killed and who killed you. (PR is better than that)

pressing the I button and seeing how many kills you have (TG Tac Mod is better than that)

Being able to see friendly nametags if you focus on the person from a distance. (PR is better than that)

I would actually put PR fairly close to Armed Assault on being realistic.

Granted I am playing the demo, I am sure there are differnt mods were things are more realistic

PS, I endorse the demo.

Re: How does Armed Assault play to BF 2 or POE?

It's awesome in a realistic way. Things like "taking time to get somewhere" are actually a factor of the game.

Things like fire teams, "slicing the pie" infantry maneuvers, and timed coordinated assaults actually are useful and help in completing your objective.

The easiest way to sum the game up vs battlefield is it is much deeper in a tactical sense. Deeper means more complex and many more ways to fail and succeed at your objective. It's also 1000x more realistic so people who like simulations just because they are simulations will like it more.

As far as multiplayer goes, I think in PvP scenarios battlefield does it better. I don't like playing AGAINST real people in the provided CTF or CTI modes. I play this game entirely for the Coop. Not all will agree with me on this point though.

BF2/POE are a cartoon, ArmA is a movie.

Re: How does Armed Assault play to BF 2 or POE?

I´ll add that ping does not matter much. A ping of 200 should not affect your gameplay as much as it does in BF, this is due to the slower paced style of the game. The slower pace does not make it any less intense. I´ve walked out of my computer room many times all sweaty after a length session of this game.

Re: How does Armed Assault play to BF 2 or POE?

Having had and played the game for awhile now I would agree with just about all that has already been said...I'd also like to add that Arma is basically in it's infancy right now...TG has really taken the ball and run with it regarding Arma and things are only going to get better...much better!!

About the game, it is Very deep...in all aspects..and the editor is amazing..you can do just about anything with it and put it into the game. Be warned though...the editor does take some learning!! There is alot to learn about it!!! (at least I have alot to learn!!!)

I have no doubt once it is released here, ArmA will be huge at TG.

good luck!!

Re: How does Armed Assault play to BF 2 or POE?

Example--In a mission last week it was crucial to bring up Ammo trucks and Repair trucks to the front line. Transit from the rear to the frontline took at least 10 minutes of driving across the huge map. In another mission I read about but did not play, the objective was to escort a convoy across the island on a very long trip. Gas stations along the way were utilized cars needed to be commandeered from random citizens in order to get the troops transported. Those are the little details that I really like. Supplying the frontline is a real factor in this game.

In another mission it was critical to keep the little bird alive and maintained because the spawn point was many miles from the battlefield and troops had to be transported via the helo to get there...otherwise you'd have to drive many many KM's...Once the little bird dies no respawn, no mission success.

Infantry engagements are typically at 200-500 Meters. Armor even further out. Very rarely do you get closer without getting killed.

The game has a way to go...don't be deluded. It's a bit buggy and crashes sometimes for no reason but most of us feel many of those issues will be addressed with the US/UK release.

I love the BF games, always will, but ArmA is where it's at for me for the future. I've played POE and PRM only a handful of times since downloading ArmA and when I do it feels like I'm going 1000 mph. Even PRM feels that way.

As an aside I'll note that I played COD2 last night on our heavily modded COD2 server. OUr COD2 mod really slows things down. I tore it up last night with every weapon I used and I'm basically ok at best at this game. I could only attiribute this to my recent play on ArmA where marksmanship at distance is very important. Felt like I couldn't miss last night playing COD2...hmmm...maybe I was just lucky last night but it felt like my ArmA experience really helped me out.

Re: How does Armed Assault play to BF 2 or POE?

Try to keep in mind that a lot of things realism-wise (ie seeing enemies on maps, having floating text when mousing over exposed enemies in command view) are server-side options.

Other things, like the scoreboard or death messages, are taken out in mods. WGL, which my group plays in OFP (and which we'll be helping to test as it transitions to ArmA), takes out both and you only see your own kill count at the end of each mission.

ArmA by itself is one thing. ArmA, once mod teams get to it, is going to be something else entirely.

This is an important point. Most of the content for OFP will be player directed and because the server downloads the missions to players directly, you can refresh add/remove maps from the rotation very easilty without worries about distribution. You certainly don't have to worry about the issues the BF2 expansions caused.

In addition to those working around the world to develop content and modifications, TG already has a strong 10+ person team of those actively working on developing a TG specific mod. We are extremely excited about the level of invovlement from those participating and the oppurtunity for TG to make a name for itself in yet another game.

Three of the coolest examples of this, IMO, include:

- Real constellations and tides: ArmA's great depth even includes such features as fully simulated star maps, lunar cycles, and tides.

- An area over 400 square kilometers (including the empty ocean area ) in size: Full of flora and fauna, ArmA's massive world is ready to be explored.

- Time, day/night cycles, and weather effects: You carry a watch that actually measures time, and the sun rises and sets in complete cycles in real time. There are also various weather effects that add to the overall immersion.

When you combine details like this into a good battle sim, it makes for quite a gaming experience.

Not be a killjoy or anything, but ArmA's environment is not 400km2 of actual landmass. It's bugged me that it was advertised that way when the actual landmass is closer to ~150km2 or so.

The claims of ArmA's environment being "bigger than the original islands, including Nogova, combined!" are incorrect.

However, if you count the empty ocean, it's 400km2. Which, logically speaking, you shouldn't count..

Re: How does Armed Assault play to BF 2 or POE?

ArmA shared pretty much nothing with the BF series. They aren't even in the same genre.
