Windows Vista DreamScene: Full Motion Video Desktop

I saw some articles detailing Windows Vista DreamScene which allows you to have full motion video as your desktop background. Perfect for people who have too many cpu cycles . It seems that this will be available to Windows Vista Ultimate only.

You can see a bit of it in action in this video at around the 8m30s mark or much better footage in this video. I thought the water dripping off the leaf background cool. A bit more info can be found in this article.

For those of you who want more dynamic content there is DeskScapes. DeskScapes provides support for dynamic content such as Direct3D (think of the aquarium screensaver running directly as part of your desktop) or desktops that change based on some criteria such as time, weather, stock market, etc.

A leaked version can be downloaded. Do a search in google. Or you can grab it here.

That looks pretty cool. A bit distracting, but very neat nonetheless. I wonder how much ram it would suck up, being as we need all we can for BF2 to run well.

Well, you can always right-click on your desktop and pause it before playing games.

Is this similar to the active desktop on windows XP. I can use one or multiple animated backrounds and stuff under active desktop but it destroys performance.

You can do this in XP as well pretty easily, just set your background to the color:

Code:
Hue: 200
Sat: 240
Lum: 8

Red: 16
Green: 0
Blue:16
...start up a movie full screen, hit Windows+D to minimize and there ya go.

Cool. Gotta love hardware pass through.

Um..no. It is nothing like active desktop. DreamScene can host looped high-definition video as your background.

This works? I'm going to have to try it later...

You can set your video to loop playback too. I don't see how this isn't almost exactly the same. Vista is doing a hardware passthrough, and on XP you're doing the exact same thing by using the passthrough color... It may be more refined in Deamscene, but you can use the same videos. Heck, you can even set up playlists in WMP under XP.
