TacticalWiki gets a major overhaul!

It was always my desire to be able to integrate a full-fledged MediaWiki site into the Tactical Gamer site, but I had been unable to find an adequate solution to this problem for some time. I ended up giving up and launched the TacticalWiki.com site to provide the necessary functionality.

A couple days ago I had the pleasure of getting a PM from Perry letting me know about a project he uncovered that does exactly what I wanted to do. After examining the product and running a few tests I decided that this integration can finally be performed.

The process of integrating these two sites is already under way and should be completed within the next day or two. Once it is complete, TacticalWiki will be completely embedded within the TG site and can be easily used/referenced throughout the site as well as in forum posts through some new custom BBCode tags. More information will be provided as the project progresses, but if you’re a fan of the Wiki or a regular contributor, this should make things much nicer for you!

Oh, and we’re also upgrading to MediaWiki v1.9. So there will be some new toys to play with!

Good stuff. Is the URL of the pages going to change? If so please let me know when it does so I can update my buddy list program.

That's great news Apophis. Cant wait to see what this will look like! Just a few questions if you are ready to answer them...

Some of the posts on these forums really should have been entered on the Wiki instead of the forums. Will there be a way for administrators to convert forum posts to the Wiki area, or will it need to be done manually?

Will the ability exist for contributers to upload images (even batch image uploads) for the content of the Wiki. I know that right now some articles are linking external images. If those images are removed, the Wiki article could become useless.

Lorian also brings up a good point. Will the domain tacticalwiki.com still go directly to the Wiki? If so, will the urls remain?

Awsome news! That should make things a lot easier and make updating lists and info pages much easier instead of stickies everywhere.

I'll get these answers as they become available.

As far as the URL changing.. Yes.. It will change, but I will also have URL rewrites in place to force any reference to an old Wiki page to rewrite to the appropriate new URL of the new Wiki page.

The system is largely working right now (but hidden). I'm having issues keeping the session data between the forums and wiki which causes some editing problems. Once I get those worked out I'll start opening it up to the public. The data from the old Wiki is already imported and working nicely.

Hm, in my preferences under misc I am trying to set it to never underline links, but it keeps setting it back to always...

Well...

a) The old wiki is running an old version. I'm not about to start troubleshooting it when it's in the process of being replaced.

b) The new wiki is still being configured. It's not ready for end-user use and as-such, I'm not about to start troubleshooting it when it's not even done being installed.
