Hardware required for high video settings

Hi guys, I was hoping to get some PC building advice from people that play BF2142 with high video settings.

Currently, with my Athlon XP OCed to 3200 (32 bit), GeForce 7800GS AGP and 2GB RAM, I play on medium/low video settings (all low for titan). The game is playable (no stutter) at stays at 20 fps at worst.
The res is 1600x1200. That's native to my LCD Samsung 204B - all other res look really poor. For sound, I've got an X-Fi too, settings are medium with EAX (high or ultra sound settings cause arty to crackle loudly in my headphones).

One more piece of info: when I drop from 1600x1200 to 800x600, my fps barely go up (say from 30 to 35).

For those of you that play on high settings with good fps 40+ on the titan, could you list your system specs for me? I want to build a new PC and wanted firsthand advice. Thanks.

Re: Hardware required for high video settings

You have a 7800 and play on medium/low? That doesn't make much sense, I have a 6800 and I play medium/high at 1280x1024. What res are you using?

All my drivers, bios etc are up to date.

Re: Hardware required for high video settings

From the many positive comments I've heard I would think the 8800GTX would be a good selection for video.

I wondered about your medium/low with a 7800GS because I ran much higher then that on BF2 and I have a slower processor and half the RAM you do.

Re: Hardware required for high video settings

Good points Digital and Lorian.. but the native res of his monitor is up there so that high native res of the monitor is taxing the capabilities of the AGP Vid card

@Lousy--you are running an AGP card and I'd say that's your bottleneck right there...You won't like this but...I'd suggest upgrading your mobo to one that offers PCIE...that'll allow you to go with a higher end vid card, like the 8800 someone else mentioned.

I don't play 2142 but I do play all the other BF2 mods etc...I was in the same boat you were when either my vid card or my AGP mobo failed last year. I upgraded at that time to a skt 939 mobo that included a pcie slot. (asus a8n5x) I had been running a skt 939 mobo but with an AGP video card (EVGA 6800GT). At the time I upgraded (Aug 06) the skt 939 amd chips had just dropped in price significantly because of the new intel core 2 duo chips. The AMD chips are still very nicely priced and now might be a good time to upgrade there as well. Some would say skt 939 is not such a good choice as the upgrade path is now limited. Still I'm a slave to a good deal so I didn't care about that. I picked up the X2 4800, ASus a8n5x and an EVGA 7900GTX vid card for around 7 bills. I went a bit overboard but I think I'm good for another couple of years.

Time to upgrade my friend.

Re: Hardware required for high video settings

I've got 2142 running on all high settings on an X1950XTX, but then again, you would expect that kind of performance. No lag whatsoever, except mabey the first 5 seconds of a new map.

Re: Hardware required for high video settings

I have a 7900gs and am not able to play on high even at 1024x768. And I have 2 gigs of RAM.

I was playing with every setting maxed out at 1280x1024 on a 7900GS?

Re: Hardware required for high video settings

GS is the AGP version so half the bandwidth gets through but if jep says he can play it at high it comes down to your processor you may be getting bottle necking tempus.

Re: Hardware required for high video settings

My GS is PCI-E.

Perhaps there is something I am missing, Jep? I have a 3200+, and I'm running it on an LCD.

Re: Hardware required for high video settings

Your processor is bottlenecking you Tempus. I have a 7900GS too, and I run all high at 1280x1024. I've got a C2D E6400 and 2GB RAM.

2gigs, pc3200 speed. I'll try to upgrade sooner than later.

Thanks for the tips.
