Was inspired to try Recon tonight ...

... by the many informative posts here regarding profitable Recon tactics, and I must say that it was a blast to booby trap flags, and vehicles. To see a buncha guys hit a flag, and meet a pair of claymores .. then after they regroup and huddle around the flag, notice there are several RDX charges all around them, while I watch from 50 yds away, and hit the trigger .. THAT is comedy gold, my friend.

I only have legitimate access to RDX in that kit, so I was only using Field Upgrades for everything else, but even without Camo, and using the weakest recon rifle, it was still an awesome kit to play.

Thanks to all who share the knowledge.

In BF2 it used to be standard practice to C4 the flags you left. I've only ever been blown up by C4/RDX once on a flag in BF2142. I don't know if it's just me, or I just started playing a few pubbie servers, but I've found more RDX chuckers, lately.

Try visiting one of those FF OFF Servers and then you will see where the RDX people hide

FYI, the "Weakest recon rifle" is by no means weak. I prefer the team sniper rifles over the zeller. The difference in damage is a neglegible 10 points, which is great if the enemy is only slightly hurt, doing 90 dmg will kill them instead of 80... however there are plenty of other benefits to the base rifles.

Here's the breakdown
Zeller:
3 Shots
90 Damage
LOUD
Longer recharge time between shots
Destroys mines
Red, circular scope (Personally I do not like it - the red bugs the hell out of me)

Basic:
5 shots
80 Damage
Quieter
Less time between shots
Clear scope

Really this is all a matter of personal preference, but do not be so quick to throw out the other rifles - they have their uses.

Couldn't agree more. I prefer the starting sniper rifles for infantry maps, because of the larger, clearer sight picture, better magazine capacity, and it doesn't have a tracer of sorts when fired. Snipers are still pretty easily spotted by alert players, but it doesn't help to have a tracer as well. I can see more uses for the Zeller on vehicle maps, because even though engineers might have defusers, who wants to get out of their vehicle in front of angry enemy armor?
