Re: Smart claymores
I think the idea is that saving the lives of innocents and friendlies is worth more than the cost of the claymore (in some cases).
Besides, they spend even more ridiculous amounts of money on bomb and missile guidance and operations systems which ultimately "just blow up" as well.

Re: Smart claymores
They are not 'smart' as they cannot actually tell enemy from friendly, the camera feed is just sent to a remote display box and the operator makes the decision. Limited usefullness without being autonomous.

Re: Smart claymores
Hehe, maybe they should make it so the commander gets a video screen for each claymore and can set them off when he sees someone

Re: Smart claymores
well, mines are now starting to work with the IFF (identify friend or foe) to be able to same lives of friendlies. If it gets a friendly responce, it "shuts down" and is made so that it cant explode. If it doesnt get the IFF, nice knowing you. Shouldnt be long before claymores get that

Re: Smart claymores
I've made a similar mental leap as Hellswaters with regards to APMs in 2142. Some kind of advanced Friend or Foe system, maybe friendlies emitting an extremely short range RF (possibly from their uniform) that disables the APM.
Not so convincing though when an enemy activates the mine right near you and he gets torn to shreds while you're left unscathed. |

Re: Smart claymores
Guidance systems on some ICBMs that are 1500 times more powerfull then then the best computer here on TG. Hell, love to get my hands on some IR-TV cams that some of these air to ground missles have. Cost a hella lot more then that dinky camera plus the GPS.

Re: Smart claymores
Yea, friendlies could be equiped with RFID chips that the claymore could pick up on.

Re: Smart claymores
And had the thread been about those, then I probably would've made the same comment. I have nothing against adding equipment to make weapons more accurate and more safe to those who they aren't intended to be used against, I was merely pointing out the irony.
