Is BF2 still active and worth the purchase?

I'm new to BF2142 and to fps in general. I've thoroughly enjoyed BF2142 and think I might enjoy BF2 even more due to the time that it's set in, modern vs. future. Is there still an active TG presence in BF2 and is it worth the purchase? Or should I just focus on getting good in BF2142 for the time being?

Yes, you should play BF2142, to the exclusion of all else. BF2 is dead. Only people who are dead to God play BF2. And commies. They play BF2 as well. You aren't a dirty commie, are you?

In fact, get your friends to play BF2142 as well. If they don't, nail them to a cross as an example. Remember, there are no other people, only potential BF2142 squadmates.

I fixed your quote for you.

I am a dirty commie and there are many like me who play BF2. But at TG, we play Point of Existence or Project Reality both based off of BF2. Check them out as TG runs servers for both those mods. 2142 is fun also.

I'd be a dirty commie too, but I think I chucked my BF2 manual (with key), and my brother has been too busy to get me his.

Therefore, I lash out to assuage my self-loathing.

And I started watching that series 'Rome' form HBO. My wife says I'm getting all the wrong ideas from it.

I go back every once in a while. Like mentioned, POE2 and Project Reality is played. They are both free mods to BF2 and the gameplay is quite a bit different than even regular BF2.

You mean apart from being better than vanilla in every respect? Or fixing issues that EA/Dice were to lazy, or to dumb to fix on their own? Not to mention the plethora of added features. The mods outshine vBF2 by orders of magnitude. Point blank. EOL. EOF. QED.

I wish I'd only bought bf2 now, so I wouldn't have had to put up with EA's **** for so long. The mods are really making the game worthy only now. Since you'll also get a great price for bf2, now is really the time to get it imo. Don't forget there are plenty of great mods in the pipeline as well.

Re: Is BF2 still active and worth the purchase?

Quite a few different ways:

POE has eliminated CO Artillery (It's a vehicle now), Scanners and UAV's. The maps are gorgeous, the weapons are accurate and deadly and they have totally built the weapon systems, and vehicles from the ground up. You can move quietly and have a fair shot of achieving surprise.

PR has created a different system of play designed to concentrate the battles. Weapons are deadly and the best of them are limited so that you won't have every player taking the best kits. They have also put a premium on life with the thoughts of greater teamplay and people play as if their life was important enough to not die.

My particular favorite is POE but there are plenty of people who play both.

PRM FTW

Actually PoE is fun when you need a break from both Vanilla and PRM. Just prepare to use alot of Armor

Heh. And it wasn't my intent to be confrontational at all. I as merely showing my enthusiasm for the mods over vanilla and EA/Dice's collective incompetence.

Cheers.

As far as gameplay goes, PoE showcases the whole gambit exceptionally well, with only a few hiccups here and there. Everything from outstanding infantry only confrontations (and I used to HATE the idea of IO in BF2 when EA/Dice first fielded the option) on maps like Fallen - a dense, heavily forested map - to air superiority maps. I mentioned hiccups before, but they are nothing at all like what you see in vanilla. It really does take quite a while for them to become apparent at all and even then, they aren't truly game-breaking issues. I have it on good authority that the next patch for PoE will add more polish to these areas though so you'd be getting into it at a good time.

PRM is good for people who like the ultra-reality FPS sim. Getting killed in with just one shot brings swift and frequent death with progressively longer respawn times to the run-and-gun crowd. Proper team ethics and cohesive squad tactics win the day. It's generally a much slower-paced game as a result, though. Vehicles have especially lengthy respawn rates. And, depending on who you ask, some maps can last literally hours and not all of it very pleasantly.

IMO, with more polish rubbed in, PR might very well become a more attractive buy-in. But at the moment, my betting money is on PoE.

Also, in this thread people are talking about our so-called "Monday Night Madness" where we've tried out some of the less developed mods for kicks and tricks. It's a good thread to keep an eye on.
