New for 1.4 -> NO MORE PODSURFING

I have been reading around about this, and from what I have been hearing they are eliminating the PodSurfing in the solid patch (it isnt in the Beta).

Um, my two cents: Yay!

Hmm i guess that's nice to an extent. Wouldn't that nerf several maps on the NS expansion pack then?

I can't see how, the change only effects the pods that you come down on the beacon in.

Re: New for 1.4 -> NO MORE PODSURFING

Well, if thats the case, since you no longer will have the ability to avoid being beacon-camped, i suggest we take the initiative to amend the rules to prevent beacon camping. Some will argue that you dont have to spawn on the beacon as an alternative to being camped, and yes, most people will know that. But for those that dont, it's detrimental to the style of play that we promote here.

This is derailing the thread. This has been discussed many times in other threads.

Yay for no pod spinning.

This is all speculation until we see the actual patch, who knows what we will see once it is out. We should hold this conversation until the patch is released.

Re: New for 1.4 -> NO MORE PODSURFING

the dice quote, previously quoted by bommando a few days ago in a separate thread on rooftopping.

Quote:
The Pod Surfing change is something we've been debating for a long time. The Pods from the spawn beacon were originally intended to be immobile; spawning on the beacon meant falling straight down. Creative players found ways around this, through means of which most forums readers are aware.

We made an early fix in a patch to prevent free flying pods, of all varieties, but some control of the drop pods from beacons was left. As pod surfing becomes more common it's effect on 2142 is being felt. We feel that pod surfing negative impact on gameplay for all players and removing it will improve the combat experience for all players.

Re: New for 1.4 -> NO MORE PODSURFING

Hey guys, I'm kinda new around here and I'd like some clarification on this pod surfing business.
Specifically, what are the rules on TG regarding the following situation: SL places beacon, I spawn in the pod and spin my mouse. This moves the pod and makes me land somewhere else than I would were I not moving my mouse. (ie. farther away from the beacon.) Now, so long as I don't land on a roof, is this illegal or looked down upon on TG?

If so, can you please explain why? If not, what is the general attitude of the people? Will it be looked down upon as a "cheap" tactic?
I'm fairly certain I didn't come across pod surfing in the primer and related newbie reading material but I could be wrong.

1. You can pod spin/steer to avoid a camped beacon.
2. You can NOT pod spin/steer for tactical reasons.

Re: New for 1.4 -> NO MORE PODSURFING

This is not an official press release. This is a post in total 2142 forums by a guy that is known to be employed by dice. This is just some guy from dice shooting the breeze on some forums.

Sometimes, these things are just gossip. I doubt "all" pod steering will be eliminated. Just don't expect people to surf all the way from the PAC UCB on Berlin to the EU Outpost.

Re: New for 1.4 -> NO MORE PODSURFING

Ooooooh. My bad then. I was thinking it was from a PR or Community Relations person. I'm a communications/ new media major, so let's just say I notice stuff like that.

I don't expect somebody on a forum to use proper grammar-- I know I often don't (on a forum). So, I'll edit my post.

we've discussed why beacon camping is fine and legitimate at length, but what it comes down to is this: you choose to put that beacon down as a squad leader. you could have kept your spawn point on yourself, but for whatever reason you chose not to. You've still got some modicum of orientation when you get in, and you know exactly where you'll be when you spawn in. As a squad leader, you take the risk that your beacon will be camped when you put it out.
