Carpathian Mountains 08-02-2007

0:58 minutes until the round starts.

"Welcome to the 5inDaHawus squad! We're going after Lumber Mill post haste fellas, so please delay your spawns on me; do not spawn at the German main. I'll try and grab a jeep and make a run for the mill, then and only then spawn on me. If the jeep is full and you haven't spawned yet, please, hold on a little longer until the rest of us arrive at the flag. We'll need all the bodies we can get to flip that flag quickly. We can expect to see lots of armored units hitting that position so for this squad, I'll need 2 medics, 2 AT kits, and a Spec.Ops to trap the flag. I'll go support and provide cover fire and ammo for the rest of you whilst we defend the mill after we've secured the position."

The 5inDaHawus squad started of fairly weak; I having spawned too far away from the jeeps at the German main to grab a ride of my own and getting stuck with a driver who didn't quite make it to where he wanted to go, and most of the rest of my squad spawning at the main rather than delaying their spawns on their SL. When my driver missed several key turns en route to the Lumber Mill and started to slide down a hill, I bailed out and made the rest of the trip to the Lumber Mill flag on foot - alone.

I chided my squad mates a little for not getting the delayed spawn thing right and a few for not picking up their assigned kits. To my surprise, though I arrived on foot, no one from the Ukraine team had showed up at the Lumber mill yet and with a few other blues on location, it was an easy 1 up for the Germans. By that time, however, Reds were starting to arrive in force and the Mill's newly spawned tank was ripe for grand theft auto. With no one appearing to notice or care that it could be turned against us, I hopped in, and helped wreck an enemy tank - just arrived assaulting our position. From there we defended that position for several minutes while the other squads secured their objectives... and while most of my squad members pursued objectives of their own with me repeatedly having to call them back and take up their assigned kits.

A few token infantrymen made attempts at breaching our defenses and they were easily repulsed with the odd jeep running spoiler in between.

We had a second tank on location assisting with the Lumber Mill defense, which got wrecked by an inbound APC and tank convoy moving up from the east entrance next to the bridge. The APC spotted me near the north bridge entrance, put a few rounds into my side armor, for which I returned him a sabot round into his treads.

It was then that I spotted the tank supporting his position and decided to attempt a flanking maneuver, as he hadn't seen me, by going around the east end of the barn as they pushed west and south to the flag. My squaddies had by now for the most part taken up their assigned roles and finished off the APC before I completed my maneuver, leaving me a prize target with the Ukr tank's rear armor exposed before my sights. 2 shots were all he took. Incidentally, two shots into my side panels from Mantis' tank coming from the southwest - the tank I hadn't seen - was all I took as well.

To their credit, those who were left at the lumber mill as the flag flipped put up a stiff fight. By that time, in addition to Mantis' tank, the Lumber Mill was crawling with Ukr infantry. I decided that trying to retake the Mill would be futile and informed my squaddies that we'd be redeploying to the North Cabin.

From here on, what started out for me as being, "OhNoes! Not one of my TG buddies, let alone anyone from the 5th, made it into my squad," turned into one hulluva kick-arsed pubby squad!

I'd grabbed a Dingo from the German main and was making my way up the switch backs toward the North Cabin and was ambushed by defenders at the rocks and trees just before the entrance at the fork of the road. Some quick thinking and a lot of gas turned me up the hill instead of down the road where I took the high ground along the ridge north of the cabin, leaving the defenders behind at the fork in the road to tangle with a few troops who were making their way on foot.

From there, we set up over-watch down into the North Cabin and began harassing troops there until some reinforcements arrived. We liberated the flag with a little help from a smaller squad and set up defenses there that were not breached for the rest of the round.

A few guys were still chomping at the bit, hopping into jeeps and trying to run off and assault the East Farm. A quick reminder brought them back, however, and they weren't disappointed at sticking around for the amount of action our squad saw on defense there.

The first major assault came from below the cabin, probably from the East Farm, trying to make their way on foot up the east switch backs. An alert squad member spotted troops in the woods below the cabin and I gave the order to deploy along the ridge looking down onto the road and into the forest. Casualties were high on the Ukraine squad's side until an APC on the high road from East Farm eliminated our high-ground advantage over the squad below.

Fortunately, my At kits had maintained their roles and I had the two of them engage the APC while my footmen engaged the Ukr squad below, who had by now regrouped. The APC went down in fairly short order, but it was soon clear he was not alone with 2 tanks bringing up the rear.

Knowing that we would be in some serious doodoo if I remained below, on level with the cabin's flag, I made a break across the road for the trail leading up the north ridge where we could regain a high-ground advantage over both armor and infantry.

My squaddies provided excellent covering fire and kept hostile forces distracted long enough for me to get up the hill with only a few bullets whistling past. I took the high-ground while my squaddies and a few other defenders pushed back the Ukr hostiles. It was a tough fight though and one by one, they each respawned with me on top of the ridge - over looking the now mostly helpless armor and men below.

It was text-book defenses from that point on. Though I suffered fatal wounds on top of the ridge, the two tanks and even a 2nd APC to reinforce them were either destroyed or turned back to the East Farm, which by that time was seeing action of its own. From then on, I didn't have to remind them to maintain defensive positions and stick to their assigned roles as I think it finally sunk in that defense is easier than offense and you'll end up seeing just about the same level of action in either event.

My squaddies repelled determined assaults from Ukr infantry trying to take the east and west roads and along the north ridge a number of times before the round ended, and they never let the flag drop to neutral.

I never expected a pubby squad to turn about and come together quite like these guys did.

Kudos to the following squad members:

Re: Carpathian Mountains 08-02-2007

I was an SL for the German team as well. I started by getting a jeep and stealthily moving it south of the East Cabins. I got out, blew up the jeep, and we all proceeded north toward the slope. Below the crest, we let two nearly full dingos leave and we moved up to the flag. I told everyone to fire only when close so as to make sure that any bullets we fired would make a sure kill. However, Freeno does not like bullets...

Later on we ended up taking West Cabin and soon after Lumbermill. We split up with myself and Freeno in the tank at West Cabin, and the rest of the squad at lumbermill. Each time one flag was attacked, we would all converge to defend. I think Mantis started to get the idea, so he tried sending his squad to lumbermill to pull us off West Cabin, while he and his medic would sneak into that flag. Unfortunately for him, i shot mantis right in the eye along with his medic. He claims he was "looking at his map", but I know better

You must have scared him off, because he was part of that armored convoy that was bringing heat down on my squad up an North Cabin, lol. Him and a couple of chums from the 33rd as I recall. With the 2 tanks and sundry footpads, I struggled to make it alive from the rocks behind the cabin to the path up the ridge and get into position for my squad to flank them from above. We didn't see much in the way of armor after that little skirmish though.

You guys defended the North Cabin well. Our squad tried to take that flag a few times. We just couldn’t get it together for some reason. It was me, BaneII, Luuser, Thundeer and someone else whose name escapes me (sorry). I remember seeing you guys defending the north ridge along with a few snipers from other squads who really gave us a hard time. By the time we cleared you guys out of the area we couldn’t get back in time to turn the flag. We did get best squad and a ton of kills which all amounted to nothing because we couldn’t turn that flag. Great defense and nice work. It was very frustrating on our end.

Cheers! You guys were good sports and probably helped my pubbies stay happy with their defensive roles, communicating sitreps, and learning the TG way. I think they had lots of fun. Thanks.
