Re: Mortor time :)

I've only ever managed to use mortars effectively once, and that was on Risen, I need more mortar time.

I can't believe that I spelled it "mortor".

Re: Mortar time :)

Personally, I'm mortarfied at all the time I've seen some squads put into this stationary, fairly passive attack when it results in so few kills.

The blast radius is small, and few people have enough skill to make one land accurately enough to do much good.

It seems to me that many people are using mortars whenever they can because its novel, they want to practice, and its fun to challenge yourself to get a bit closer to blowing someone up than the last round you shot.

Unfortunately none of these things are likely to help your team much, and the tunnel-vision that can occur when an SL and/or several members are launching rounds for 5 minutes has resulted in many missed opportunities and a reactive, rather than proactive tactical approach.

I'm sure the mortars are great when used at the right time in the right place, but what I've seen so far is more the mentality expressed in the saying "when the only tool you have is a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail".

I'm hoping to see a bit more balance in the use of mortars, where the fun and novelty of using them is tempered by an awareness of what the rest of the team needs from the squad; and it will often not be a mortar strike.

We all should be willing to put down the hammer and use the tool that will do the job best, even if pounding those nails is the most fun at the moment. This is the meaning of mature gameplay, and we're Tactical Gamers. Represent.

Re: Mortar time :)

I have seen some bad use of them and some really good use. There is a mix, but some people are really getting the hang of it and playing smart! I watched the other night as one guy hung back with it and pummeled the flag his squad was attacking and then smoking it when they went in for the kill.

Though I can envision even more effective use with them if you had a small 2-3 man specialty squad of them that moved around based on commanders orders and coordinated with the other squads their shelling much like the arty should be. So Squad 1 is going to take X flag and commander asks us to shell it into oblivion.

Re: Mortar time :)

I like using them in my squad when we are defending a flag that will see only occasional action. Makes for fun downtime and you can quickly jump off and engage attackers like normal when they arrive.

Defending the UKR main as US on Crimea is a good example. I had bigtime success doing this Saturday night.

Re: Mortar time :)

I like using mortars because I know that it makes opposing snipers happy.

I'm happy to see people using them, even when they aren't the best possible use of someone's time, because as a group we need to learn how to use them and when they are effective. When coordinated, they can be very helpful in support of flag assaults.
