Anyone else really like Guardian?
Now that the frogfoots don't dominate this map I'm really liking this one. It definitely needs a full server but when that happens I really get into this one. The atmosphere is unique and the firepower is awesome. Nothing better that trying to hold a flag against two attack choppers, several tanks and a squad with an annoying sniper. Thats the main reason I like it though is because you can make stands like that...unlike Sambir the flag setups tend to be like fortresses. You get lots of places to setup defense or keep a SL alive and every flag has at least one stationary AA. The only flag I don't go for is the village as UKR...Eurotigers cause too much trouble there.
There is big downtime now and then but with the atmosphere I get that calm before the storm feel and then in comes a huge armor convoy with chopper support out of the fog layer. Fun times. This one is also a lot of fun to command. The travel times make flags change hands slower so with some coordinate and asset management you can really develop a plan and see it work. I hope we play it tonight. ![]()

Re: Anyone else really like Guardian?
Played it last night with a full server and it was pretty decent. Our squad defended one flag (can't remember flag name but it was in the middle of the map) the entire round and never received a serious attack so there was LOTS of downtime so I can see why some people might dislike it. The flags are spread out pretty well and moving to them on foot isn't much of an option with all the air power. Still enjoyed myself.

Re: Anyone else really like Guardian?
Its a decent map, but my main gripe with it is the massive distance between flags with relatively little cover in between. This means infantry can only stay at a flag (as opposed to between them) making it pretty repetitive. The fact that you can only defend a flag by actually being right next to it makes the strategy of the map almost non existent. Just get 3 flags, put a squad on each, and hope you can hold out. To go on a tangent, this is why i like maps like Spies, Fallen, Carpathian, Rivne, Orel, and any other map where you have tons of fighting in between flags. It makes each round different from the last time you played it, and it makes overall strategy really interesting.
Anyway, you can sometimes have decent armor battles in between the flags though, which can be pretty fun so long as the opponents air power (particularly choppers) aren't leagues above your own air power. |

Re: Anyone else really like Guardian?
I wish there was a little more cover options between flags(I think the map was originally supposed to have more trees?) but it doesn't bother me too much. It basically forces a different style of play(move in armor or die) which is a nice change of pace....creates some big armor battles like you mentioned and the strategy you seek changes to the armor level. That night I CO'ed the squad you were in had great armor cover between the flags around that bridge....worked great. Infantry at least have a playground to be successful in ...unlike Sambir which I'm really starting to dislike now.

Re: Anyone else really like Guardian?
There have been a couple times where my squad was intercepted on the hills between flags by a chopper. And for whatever reason the chopper pilot eliminates the whole squad but the squad leader. I don't mind the map now with the weaker frogfoot but agree that I would love to see more cover.

Re: Anyone else really like Guardian?
I really like getting people in those tree makes it easier for the hind to eradicate them, I have always loved the 64ver or this map I wish that a lot more people would at least make the effort to take all the armor out of the main.
It's depressing to come back after a run and see hordes of armor sitting idle at the UCB, especially if we are getting our butts handed to us. |

Re: Anyone else really like Guardian?
With the airpower leveled out, this is a whole new map to explore. So far, I'm having a blast providing A2A and close A2G support and dropping CO-designated air strikes. It's so much more fun what a pilot has CO objectives to fulfill. The ground game looks like tons of fun now too with the Frogfoot's "I win!!" button taken away from it. From above, I've seen gambits playing out around the flags below that would make Old McAuliffe beller out, "Nuts!"

Nah, that was no CO order. I was following you in after your co-pilot decided it would be a good idea to take a pot shot at me while I was busy in a furball with the SU-27.

Re: Anyone else really like Guardian?
I love guardian now since the frogfoot got toned down, it actually gives armor a fighting chance now and allows infantry to cap flags.
Now you just gotta watch out for my chopper whoring ![]() |
