Question Smoke 'nades...

okay, it's been a looooooooooong time since I last used smokes, but I just had a thought (this could also apply to other games with smoke grenades too).

Why throw the grenade between you and your destination, when you can throw it at the people shooting at you? Obscuring their entire screen. Meaning that there is no big 'SHOOT ME' sign on you, and they will at least have to move to escape the smoke, or be less accurate (wrong word?) in their shooting.

Just a thought, maybe it could reduce the crappyness of the current smokes, I'll do some testing tomorrow.

Re: Smoke 'nades...

In the time that it takes you to swith so smoke nades and then throw it, its pretty darn likely you'll be dead by then. Personally, i'd use smoke nades alot more often if they had some actual meaning in them. The type of maening that you would see in PR or POE, were smoke nades really does give you a tactical advantage. Unfrtunately, the smoke nades in 2142 is just a big puff, you actually have a better chance to kill them to the shot then to smoke them out like bumble bees.

Re: Smoke 'nades...

Thinkin' we need to have applicable SOPs for 2142, rather than SOPs ported over from Ghost Recon that nobody will ever use. Theyre also kinda intimidating to new players.

Something like:

Quote:
Never bring herzogs, smokes, and radar grenades because defibs and rockets make your squad more efficient.
People respond to that. As opposed to something like:

Quote:
Example
Let's demonstrate the use of S.M.E.A.C. on a hypothetical mission.

Squad Leader: "Squad, this is Squad Leader, WARNING ORDER... prepare for ORDERS GROUP."

... TEAM STOPS CHATTING / TYPING AND PREPARES TO LISTEN ...

Squad Leader: "Squad, this is Squad Leader, ORDERS GROUP."

... TEAM MEMBERS RESPOND USING THE AFFIRMATIVE / NEGATIVE HOTKEYS ...

Squad Leader: "Squad, this is Squad Leader, ORDERS."
Because not only is it not applicable, but it intimidates new players.

Re: Smoke 'nades...

On a somewhat related note I've found that smoke grenades are actually more effective than EMPlocking for countering a Goliath in NS matches. The smoke will fog up the gunner sights making it harder for them to target your team mates as they fire at panels or RDX it and because the Goliath is so slow it can't avoid the smoke very easily. This is only because EMP grenades disable the Goliath for all of half a second so the smoke actually lasts longer.

Re: Smoke 'nades...

ya smoke grenades are a very good beacon for rifle rockets, nades, rdx launchers, emps, and the occasional portable nuke launcher. I normally pack one of those in my back pocket for those special occasions.

Re: Smoke 'nades...

Whenever someone chucks smoke grenades somewhere and I here "Smoke Grenade!" followed up by the hiss, I always stop and laugh which, unfortunately for me, momentarily breaks my concentration.

And throwing EMP 'nades at the Goliath does not disable the Goliath, it disables the auto repair giving your engineers and rail gunners that much more of a chance to take the thing down that much quicker.

Re: Smoke 'nades...

"Smoking!" "Smoke Grenade!" and "Oi! Deploy a beacon" are the reason I play this game.

Reaper huzzed a radar nade at me once, that thing made the funniest sound and bounced ridiculously far. I dunno why, but couldn't stop laughing for awhile on that one.

Sorry, but Rail gunners? Is this something new to Northern Strike (EA link is the most screwed up program I have ever had to use so I can't actually get NS) or do you just mean the stationary turrets that turn really slowly and fire the blue energy thingy with the big explosion?
