After our first test of it this evening, I can say with a fair amount of confidence that VON is now mostly fixed. The crashing that we have experienced in the past no longer occurs to the severity it did before. If there are still some VON crashes, I don't know - I can only say right now that after a session that SHOULD have resulted in a dozen plus crashes, we have had precisely zero.

Caveat:
For this to work, you need people to be running the latest beta, and having the server run it is probably required as well.

With that being said, though - it works. VON is back.

I guess this means I need to load beta and so does the server in order to use Von. I myself will not use beta so I guess i'll have to wait for the next patch. If the servers are set up for the bata then i guess i'll not be playing until the official patch.

Is there a specific reason you won't use the beta, even if it does fix VON?

I leave beta to the beta testers and wait for the finished products although it seems we are beta testing for Arma2, only I seemed to have paid them for the privilage. I suppose if push comes to shove and I want to play and thats the only way, I may have to rethink it. Hopefully they wont drag this beta testing on forever and get another patch out. Perhaps I am just lazy and just want to do it all at once instead of little bits and pieces here and there.

Yes. It was quite clear for a reasonable distance around myself while playing.

Can we get rid of all this beta patch crap and just release a solid patch? I am in the same boat as Chief that im tired of having to download a million beta patches until i get to something i like. Just release a patch even if only one of the hundred fixes is usefull.

Oh, i personally don't care who fixed VON or who is going to rest the trophy on their mantel but VON better be fixed. Why didn't someone just post a single post that VON was fixed instead of having to go through all these posts. I don't care who posted this news, whether it was someones grandmother, neighbor, town pastor, govenor of California or a librarian. So next time to prevent this stuff just post a single usefull post. You can do all the testing you want, just get it done and let people know. Whether it's TG, ST, CIA, NRA, or the GOP that is helping out, no one benefits from giblet sizing as there are hundreds of communitys out there that want this to work.

I would like to see everyone post something useful and think before doing so if they know it's going to spark something like this. If it's not useful, don't say anything and it doesn't matter who you are.

Most of it wasn't necessary and again the European slang got me confused :P.

The current public beta patch policy allows for players who choose to use them to get muuuch faster updates from the developers and provide critical feedback during the patch development process. This feedback has been shown to have borne fruit already in the 1.03 beta patches - for instance, the mouse smoothing tweaks were adapted rapidly to cater to the various demands of the community.

Additionally, small fixes such as the smoke grenades working properly are easy to propagate via a beta patching policy, whereas it would become confusing to release many 'hotfix' patches to address small stuff like that. It's probably better in the grand scheme of things to do "full" patches only every x-many months, leaving the beta stuff as an option for the 'hardcore' to use if they so desire. The process of using the beta patches is so simple - both from a server admin and a player's perspective - and the compatibility is so perfect currently, that there isn't much reason not to use them.

The beta patch policy that BIS has put into effect is probably one of the coolest changes to policy that they've ever done, to be quite frank about it. Once upon a time only select people had access to this stuff. Now, everyone has a shot at it, and everyone can provide their feedback. That's an attitude I love to see from BIS, and I think it'll pay off great dividends. I think it already has, really. The fact that we were able to go from "VON is broken" to "VON works!" in a single beta patch iteration, with it being pushed out to players as soon as it was done, and not having to be mercilessly tested (as it would need to be for a full patch), should be a pretty clear benefit.

Perhaps this would better illustrate it:

Old method: "Hey guys, just wait, the next patch is going to have working VON, it's sweet!"

Current method: "Hey guys, guess what? The latest beta patch, available (here), fixes VON! Everyone can try it out, it's sweet!"

I like the latter, personally.

Before we all start shouting "all hail the king....VON is back..."

I think we need to test this at length and we have the server space to do it, so I suggest we get the "TEST" server up and running for a while instead of Bravo and we'll see how it handles....

@Viper.... you dont what Giblets are?..... damn you, you..... you...freakin colonial....revise your roots and history!

Those who then want to download the Beta can go onto the TEST server to play and lets us know how things run....

Again...I really couldnt give two figs what another group are doing as they are not playing on the TG boxes and therefore we ALL have to provide is our own results back to BiS to confirm one way or another if issues have been fixed or not, when compared to other groups. It is an issue I have raised with them, that I feel some of the Beta testing may have had too narrow a focus before now.

The beauty about the new Beta system is the expansive testing of the community userbase.... should this testing have been more expansive before release...probably... but we will get there and TG will have been a great key part to it.

Well done fellas, TG is now and will be going forwards a very KEY part of ArmA development. Good work.

Preliminary tests... 7 people on Bravo, all running the latest patch.

No reports on CTD's yet. I had to leave for a bit so they can tell more...

Need more players to help test as the problem I guess wasnt big with small amount but became much more apparent with 30-40 players when they were all talking at once and alot of stuff happening like firefights, helicopters flying, many scripts running on server etc.

The local VON definitely needs fine tuning. At least for me, someone standing 2m away sounded just about as loud as someone at 70m.

Also, 80m is the cutoff range, past 81m you wont hear direct, which is reasonable, but like said the fading needs to be better.

Objects (like Hesco, vehicles, etc) definitely obstruct VON well, but I didnt test bushes yet, which was a major problem in ArmA1, the bush obstructed VON just like a concrete wall would, making talking in direct when you were prone along a tree line very difficult especially when there was gunfire.

We need more testers!!!

Agree, get on the server yall! As for the direct VON I also agree, in any testing I did in private missions, the Direct was always very low when close, to the point of not hearing it right at all regardless of range.

Maybe a Separate VON Volume control is needed... If you have it up to high the Sound effects are a bit loud.

Also, as for now the Bravo server has the 58972 beta patch installed. EVERYONE THAT WANT TO PLAY ON BRAVO NEED TO USE THIS BETA PATCH FOR RELIABLE TESTING.

how can it be better in the grand scheme to leave the overwhelming part of the playerbase who can't be bothered acting as bohemias beta testers to leave them hanging hanging for a "full patch" every so many months... how many do you think are gonna stick around for next patch due in x amount of months??
If something is confirmed to be fixed, roll out patch 1.04.

It might have been a good idea to release betapatches, but bohemia better remember the time for beta testing is long gone, and people who have payed money for this game want to see results fast from the betapatches. Not wait months till the "hardcore" (roll-eyes) beta testers think they have gathered enough stuff for a patch for us "regular" folk...
One can spin this all one wants, fact is people see the betapatches as a cry for help from Bohemia, and since the larger communities ARE helping people want to see patches faster not wait longer in the interest of "the grand scheme of things".

I found VON to be a bit quiet even when I turned up all my audio settings. What I did to increase the volume was go into my control panel on my desktop and clicked on realtek audio manager then I clicked speakers and selected sound effects and played around with the environment and equalizer settings. These settings will make everything on your computer sound different so music may sound better than your games or vice verse so find a good balance. personally I like Environment padded cell and equalizer party
