August 12th - The Eastern Front

Not very often do I play a mission where I warrant an AAR. This was the exception.

Without a doubt, it was the best coop mission experience I have had so far. There were problems, but in the end, having 24 players all follow orders and sweep the fields and towns of an area was a sight to behold. It was VERY fun after we got organized (3 times it seemed).

Some highlights from my point of view:

    - Entering the AO via 5 Ton trucks first was a smart decision, the SAM site was very close.

    - Strolling down "Ambush Alley" (road between Modesta and Gaula) after Blackdog's section took out 2 UAZs and 2 BRDMs on it.

    - OMGZ, TANKS! Getting completely and utterly overrun by the enemy armoured platoon was probably the funnest thing I have seen in the mission. It was quite awesome, all the sections were trapped, we ran out of AT, the tanks were circling the town, chopper barely made it out before they arrived. Then, the reinforcements landing and cleaning them out with lots of AT. The breakdown in comms and general atmosphere of "fear" was incredible. At least in my section, people SEEMED scared of the tanks, it was great.

    - The EPIC FAIL that was the organization after being shattered by an armoured attack. It took, literally 1 HOUR to get the platoon back into order.

    - Witnessing a 30 player extended line sweep a 500m area was a sight to behold, the attack on Bajo Valor was one of the most memorable I have been apart of. The "fire mission" (what was it called for helos again Sam? Explosions drowned it out ) that started it off, the counter-attacks and general movement were superb.

    - The attack on Everon was great. An enemy MG nest spotted our Weapons Section and opened up on them. We flanked the town to the west and went "over the top" into the fight. Once we got onto the streets, it was a victory, we just had to clear out all the buildings. Good fun.

    - The "interesting" evac at the end of the mission ... impatient soldiers jammed into a blackhawk ... but they couldn't get in .. we took three casualties there. They gave up on life at the woe of not being able to board the chopper with a lot of angry, impatient people behind them.

All in all, a VERY good mission. And that was still the bugged version! Expect it to be even better.

The mission was deemed by Battalion to be a "Minor Victory", as a significant portion of the enemy infantry company remained, and all 3 SAM sites were not confirmed destroyed.

One day soon we will have Total Victory ...

Ugh... Really disliked this mission. Joined in late (right after everyone was going to Corazol) and couldn't raise anyone on coms to give me a position of just where people were. We had an extreme novice as a group leader who didn't have a mic, didn't give any kind of directional reports on his position/position of enemies/where he was pinned down/etc after numerous promptings... When I finally joined him he had us run off into a barn and get ambushed by 3 BMPs and a T-72, and get pinned down, while wiping our 4 of us. After that, he ran off somewhere, wouldn't respond to any comms, and the entire group got fractured. After being reallocated to Pseudonym's Huge Tacticalglob Platoon (and having to wait 30 minutes while he tried to sort out 8-12 people and seperate them into 2 fireteams, without anyone esle responding to any sort of coms, and keeping running everywhere and getting impatient) We finally made some headway and played again... Until I ran into a bug where the group leaders began to spam targetting and fire info every second. After 5-6 minutes of hearing nothing but 2, Target That Man and 2, Fire! about every second, drowning out anything i could hear and driving me crazy, i logged off

Interesting contrast. Comms make all the difference. Sorry it didn't work out for you Bisc.

Looking forward to joining up in this one when we do it again. I was 15 minutes too late.

Good games are hit and miss its hard to get all teamwork oriented players seeing as how most people are rambos.

The password on server certainly helps, and those people who do join that don't play the correct way can very easily be taught because there are not many of them, or kicked after fair warning!

Re: August 12th - The Eastern Front

To be fair, it was the third time the mission has been played. Didn't expect it to fill the server (38 players) for over an hour. If I had know about this, I would have taken the Platoon Leader slot from the get go, would have been 10x easier to get everything sorted, as I wouldn't have to give orders to 3 sections, choppers, new arrivals, AND a whole group of people patiently waiting for me to stop talking to everyone else.

I was quite upset at the lack of comms during and after that armoured attack on Gaula .. then I stopped, took a look at what was happening, considered the situation, and thought to myself .. that is EXACTLY what I was hoping for when designing this mission. Unorganized, or even not strongly organized groups to get plowed when attacking, forcing them to get organized. And anyone who stayed after the "cluster****" that was Gaula will have noticed, it DID turn for the better, and we DID get organized after. Design success in my opinion.

I just want to thank all my section leaders again, it would have been impossible without you, and if he decides to sign up on the forums, my 2IC "Cueball", he made managing my section twice as easy.

I forgot one of the more comical highlights of the night:

    - In Gaula, before the Armoured Platoon attacked, my section was rallying by a barn. I DISTINCTLY heard someone say: "We should set up a perimeter", I reply, "Don't worry, Blackdog's group is on it", little did I know, he was only watching the west as he didn't have enough people for everywhere else. Just after we get everyone kind of sorted, the ONLY GUY who was sitting down get SHOT four times in the back by an enemy patrol. Short firefight, no other casualties. Just goes to show, the REDFOR severely dislikes sloth and laziness ... keep alert in the AO!

Re: August 12th - The Eastern Front

I too had a blast yesterday. Unfortunately, I left some time after Gaula, so obviously missing the big-bang end.

I really liked the way Blackdog handled his section in the beginning, with many new people not used to TG style playing. He calmly explained what he expected people to do and to my surprise, there was only one lone runner, who more than once ran ahead into enemy territory (wonderous, how he always seems to have survived).

My short story: I was in Blackdog's section as an AR and when we encountered that first AA-BRDM, I covered the street with the SAW since we knew a UAZ had been going there and was likely to come back at any moment. But I was also interested in that LAW hitting the BRDM, so I turned my head constantly back and forth. Well, obviously, in the instant the UAZ rolled back over the ridge, my head was turned over to the BRDM ... I was the first and only one to get shot by the UAZ fortunately. This just to confirm Beta's statement, how quickly some laziness can be punished. Even though it took a while to get back (and I got back one minute before the tank assault on Gaula, in which I got killed again =)), I had a "super fun time". ;-)

That mission is really great, looking forward to playing it a bit more organized and to the end.

Wasn't it you who told people a few days ago when there was a Domination side mission on an island to just paradrop onto there without any kind of reconaissance or teamwork-like approach? If anything, that is Rambo style.

My interenet crashed as we have been reorganizing in that "HOUSE"
Was my second time in this mission but for me it felt like there was not enough
support of enemy infantery in the cities. But i only played the first half the two times.
    Anyway was lots of fun

@ bert I had done scouting by dropping in my self as it was not safe for aircraft to come near the island. I checked the surrounding area and marked a safe LZ however no one made it to the LZ because they missed the drop zone by accident and the mission turned to complete chaos.
