Re: Sunday Event 9/14/08
On the comms issue:
Firstly, we have what we have, namely VON, it's not ideal but for the most part it works. Secondly as a result of the limited comms channels those who are not in the same group only have side channel to communicate.
Example - Recon Element guiding fire support before squad advance. It is not just radio chatter per se, but a spotter using the only means possible to guide in MK19 rounds where the gunner is blind of the target. More importantly infantry squad leaders need to understand "priority of comms" and a fire support mission which is clearing enemy from the future advance positions, take priority over that Squad Leaders ability to talk to his troops on the ground.
Being a former combat sig, I can advise that if a SL came over the broadcast channel [RW] and told the fire mission spotter to break comms as he could not talk to his team, the CO would probably walk over, kick said SL in the arse and advise him that if the fire mission was not accurate and successful, said SL would be walking his entire squad into an MG nest ambush with significantly higher troop casualties.
A spotters role is also to advise if the sections are about to flanked and therefore again the SL needs to take heed of his recon element before deciding where to move. But there again, very little proper use of recon is made yet in many of our games and over time people will learn that key intelligence not only helps with planning but also reduces casualties.
All of the above is highlighted in part 5 video from above, whereby spotter had to advise the Styker gunner to hold fire as a section was blindly running into the danger zone where MK19 rounds were falling, so the fire was cancelled not because the objective was clear, but because a squad decided to move into that area before being cleared to do so. End result, one MG nest was still active and started putting fire down o the inbound Blufor forces.
So whilst use of more comms channels and possible use with TS is probably a good idea for larger missions, true understanding of priority of comms is equally important, along with movement based in intelligence rather than guess work and panic.

Re: Sunday Event 9/14/08
Not to be argumentive here .. but I disagree.
Yes, if it was only the net that had comms going over it, fire missions should have a higher priority. ArmA VON is NOT a radio net, you can't treat it as one.
While you were walking the rounds in, my section was standing in the OPEN with the MG looking AT them. I tried yelling in direct, tried it over group, no one could hear a thing.
It wasn't a matter of "if we move in we might die" it was a matter of "if we do nothing and let the comms go we die". Like I said, no one was doing anything wrong at all. The game just can't support 20+ people trying to coordinate. That's what ArmA VON + TS is for, and I think we should start using it.

Ahhhhh therefore my point being, the squad should not have been in the open in the first instance. Clearance from Recon should have been requested before advancing to the open.
But I agree, for a large scale game we will need to look into how TS and VON can work, however this is not going to be an easy process and we are likely to need a team to pull this together, in order for their to be uniformed understanding of how such a system will be used.
I think the 22nd are going to try this and we'll see how we do.BlackDog1

Re: Sunday Event 9/14/08
This is a great thread! I was on OPFOR in the first round, so it was really nice seeing the video. I could hear myself shooting at one point. :-)
I thought it was interesting that both sides started off with a Stryker full of infantry charging in and getting into trouble. I was on the Stryker in the second round. We were trying to get to Hill 181, with the idea that the Mk. 19 could control the town while we screened it. That didn't work out so well--we took an RPG hit that damaged the Stryker, and the infantry dismounted. We were ordered to screen it where we were, but the rest of the squad either didn't get the order or had an odd definition of screening, and ran off towards town to get killed. I had been hit in the legs getting out of the Stryker and couldn't keep up, so I tried to cover it by myself (unsuccessfully).
As usual for respawn games, unit cohesion didn't hold up very well when we started taking casualties. That seemed to work to the defenses' advantage, since they don't have to maneuver as much. At one point during the second round I was looking around, trying to figure out where the rest of my squad was, and noticed one guy lying in the open over 200m away from the rest of us. :-)
The US troops wearing old woodlands camo is just asking for friendly fire incidents, because they look so much like SLA. If it's at all possible, I hope that this could be changed. There were two friendly fire incidents that I saw: first, I looked looked out a window towards a reported enemy contact on the hill in that direction and spotted men running towards town. I fired on one, only to be told "check fire." They were actually friendlies, and after watching Lt. Winter's video I saw that the actual enemy troops were much farther away. The second incident was in the second round, when the group I was with had taken a farm complex near town and was bombarded by a Mk. 19 Stryker.
It would be nice if we could use sound and effects mods in future events...

Yes, Grambo? :P
Could someone please tell me where I can sign up for the next event?
My apologies if I missed something regarding it, I just searched the forum and this was the only related thing I could find...
Thanks.

Re: Sunday Event 9/14/08
I had a ton of fun at the Sunday Event. Thank you TG for allowing us to attend, special thanks to Grunt, adding us only made it more difficult to coordinate I'm sure. I look forward to playing with you all again at the next one!
