While many have tried to avert me from it, I am very tempted by the 64-bit systems. They have their problems, but what doesn't?

I have just as many problems as with a 32 bit. Most problems aren't 64bit related. With Windows7 out soon, it would be a mistake to get the 32 bit. I actually downloaded the 32 and 64 bit beta to play with on my 2 computers. Not a fair fight because the 32 bit one is from like 2001.

No, most(something like 99.9%) 32 bit software works just fine, Arma included. I've been using the 64 bit Windows 7 beta since early January, and I can honestly say I've had no more problems with it than I used to have with a 32 bit XP SP3. Maybe a bit less. It's a damn fast and stable OS.

I'm running XP x64 as my Windows-only games OS and I can attest that if your hardware supports it, a 64bit OS is the way to go. It's a generally smoother experience when the OS can fully exploit your hardware, and very few apps are incompatible.

Jack, we have no way of knowing what will run ARMA2 and what won't. But I would be really looking to upgrade if I were you, especially that gfx. card.

Windows 7 should be given free to Vista owners as part compensation for the grief we have experienced. That's the thing, with the W7 beta, what happens when it's released officially? Is the beta rendered inactive or what?

    That's assuming the beta's free...

The beta is free, and you can download it from straight from MS. I have too few posts to post links, but it should be pretty easy to find on their site. Both 32 and 64 bit versions are available. The current news is that the beta expires at the end of August 2009, at which point the final version should be out or almost out. I sure hope that's true because I'd hate to go back to XP before upgrading to the final Winows 7. Judging by the beta they should have no problems meeting that release schedule, it looks and feels very polished.

What kind of problems are we talking about here? Ive got vista 64 and havent had any yet. Or am i speaking to soon.
Another question, im running arma at 1900x1080 with the 9800gtx+ with all the goodies maxed out. Is that gonna give that card a shorter life span? Might be a dumb question but as i said before, Im no cp guru.

It will not bother the card at all..

that seems like a weird native resolution for a monitor, but it is perfect for Bluray..

First, problems with vista have been way overstated by whiny bitches that don't know what they are talking about. And most of the actual problems people have had are due to hardware vendors now putting out good drivers.

So no, MS should not give 7 out for free.

Next, you can't actually download the Beta from MS any more, that ended in early Feb. You can still find newer builds on torrents, but it has been shown that there are some that are viruses named as builds. The Beta will actually go inactive I think in like Sept or Aug. Plus, there is a new version called the Release Candidate that will be out next month. You can already find early RC builds on torrents, but again, you run some risks.

I also just posted this in the Hardware forum:

You Can Turn Off Every Major Windows Feature in Windows 7

Which is actually really big news.

Quote of the day. Vista was never as bad as people made it out to be. Only issues I have is that, since I installed it, the RAM usage is pretty high (around 50% when idle) and it can run pretty slow. Also, it won't let me install SP1 (get's stuck during the installation, common problem) yet the system has fooled intself into thinking it is SP1. I think the lack of SP1 is the main culprit, though, then again, I'm no PC hardware buff.

Suppose I can't complain, we got Vista delivered free with the PC back in 2007, as the PC was shipped with XP. Trying to get rid of old stock, they just threw in Vista

You can do it in vista already, Control panel -> Administrative tools -> Services. This is a great site to see what you can disable and not, link

@Harpo: I have Vista installed at the moment, and the biggest thing I hate is the fact that Vista makes your hard drive being always active. And I have some FPS drop in games with Vista comparing to XP SP3... would be good to have a SP2 for vista putting it like windows 7!
