Combining ARMA 2 and ARMA 2:OA

I'm going to be installing all the mods required to played on the TG servers.

As I was looking over the following guide, http://robertsandiford.co.uk/ace_oa/, I noticed the section about combining both games into a single directory.

I bought the Combined Arms package through Steam, is it still necessary?

What purpose does running both games from one directory serve?

How do I go about combining them into one directory if both games are the Steam version?
In the guide it says: "If you have both steam I recommend using one of the other methods to maintain the integrity of your steam installs. "

It doesn't really explain it in detail, so I don't know how I'm supposed to go about doing it.

Re: Combining ARMA 2 and ARMA 2:OA

If you bought "Combined Arms" then you dont need to move anything. The reason for moving the files is so OA can use ArmA2 assets and vise versa. But having bought the entire package, all you have to do is install and you are ready to rock.

Not quite true Dredge, steam users need to copy their steam arma2 folder into their steam OA folder. But still keep their ArmA2 folder incase another patch is released or they wish to play it without OA.

Do I simply just move the ARMA 2 files into the OA folder is it a more complicated process?

from what understand, yes you need to copy your arma2 root directory in to your OA root directory and that should get you squared away

Re: Combining ARMA 2 and ARMA 2:OA

He's already looked at that guide Imp

All the information you need is there, and in detail, although its not organised as well as it could be.

The easiest way for you to get going would be to use SpiritedMachine's launcher - 11-3 in the guide (note: doesn't mention in my guide yet but you need to right click Addons/Mods on the right to create groups)

    Further Information:
OA needs your A2 files to run Combined Ops, they either need to be in the same folder (or symlinked) or referenced in your modline.
Some launchers, like SpiritedMachine's will generate the modline for you if you don't have a combined install. Steam's 'Launch Combined Operations' does the same thing, but I don't know if it can be used with other mods.

I don't advise ever moving your A2 or OA files because it will invalidate your registry, and you'll hit this issue if you ever need to patch in the future (as well as preventing steam from auto-updating and patches potentially not being compatible with steam versions)

    To admins:
It's great that you're trying to help people, but right now you're just misleading and confusing people. If you want to help I suggest you read through my guide, this forum, and experiment with setting up Mods and Combined Ops in different way to give you a better understanding.
Great bit of advice. I know when I was told to move my files like I suggested, my steam still auto updates fine and have not run into any problems so that is why I suggested it.

Again, as we all know this is Arma, and how we love to have problems, and like with every computer problem, there might be a couple of solutions, one of which worked for me. Again thanks for the advice and I am sure the admins will think about every avenue of approach to solve problems.

Re: Combining ARMA 2 and ARMA 2:OA

Well we haven't had an update to ArmA2 yet, if/when they release another patch for A2 there's going to be chaos (ok, not quite)

It's also simply good practice to keep your registry intact for anything that might use it: patches/installers/launchers etc.

I finally installed the mod and got it to work using the symlinks method. Thanks for the help!

Re: Combining ARMA 2 and ARMA 2:OA

Offtopic but there is a hotfix beta to 1.07 ArmA2, that may or may not be making it's way to a 1.08 build, Anyone who has copied the A2 Content into their OA directory will need to edit their registry, and or reinstall A2, and then ... purge the OA folder of A2 Content (incase certain files are no longer used when the next update comes out) ... and then recopy, if they wish to use that method.

Man alive! I'm just about to try this exact scenario, have a Steam install of Combined Ops...will try the symlinks methiod first probably. Have to wait till friday night before the 6 pack. Would hate to do the downloads all over again.
