Why doesn't shipping operating near Somalia carry guns? Do merchant ships go entirely unarmed?

Yes the crews are not allowed to have weapons although they do perform training for being borded it is useless when you are not armed. Saw that in a report about modern day pirates. Originally Posted by FrankManik

A lot of the newer ships are carrying anti pirate tech, like those new ultra sonic or what ever ray guns that beam microwaves at the pirates and makes them feel like they are cooking from the inside. They also have the new directional speakers that send a beam of sound that is so loud it actually hurts. I know a cruise ship drove off a boarding party with that a couple years ago.

What's interesting is that there has not been any new reports regarding the specific situation over the Merchant Vessel Faina for a few days now out of CNN. This indicates to me that there may be a media blackout. The only thing that is remotely related is a report out of Somalia that pirates have attacked three to four vessels within a 24-hour timeframe.

Probably more of an SBS operation, than an SAS op, you know how they hate to be confused....
