Okay, tell us how they're different. Again, won't that be a comparison?

The Green berets are wearing berets. Plus they are green. Which is a nice color. I think it all comes down to having a nice looking beret to keep your head warm.

Re: Green Berets or Spetsnaz
I was surprise the green beret didnt win.. with it being an americans how and all the bias is obvious... but most of you guys points are damm true.. al the test were different and meh, except the last pistol test which was the same for both and actualy pretty smart. the rifle fire test.. bah.. grenade? poor setup... and the video battle at the end is just for FUN as many pointed out, its just an acted out for show based on the statistic given, cuz really, would anyone just love if it ended with 2 pages of statistic and then the credits roll in? come on :P that would be boring.
Both group furfill their jobs with the greatest skill possible...but its 2 very distinct animal here ppl 2 different way to go at it....but at the end of the day.. the enemy is dead.. thats all that matters.
Btw the show makes a big deal of saying oh these two warriors never fought in real life.......in this case? im not so sure! who knows what happened in the dark remote places of the planet in the 80s and earlie 90s....it was a different world.
btw guys, dont go into a whos #%#%#$ is bigger contest here, green beret are better, not spetsnaz are better!! we all know this only leads to arguments and fighting and it turns nasty real quick. lets discuss it, but keep it nice

Re: Green Berets or Spetsnaz
What really matters is what happens when you throw a Spartan in the mix.... both sides get pawned.
Spartan FTW!

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others

Re: Green Berets or Spetsnaz
My problem is that the killing blow in the video doesn't always represent what defeated the opponent the most. Example: Apache vs. Gladiator. Didn't the bow and arrow usually win the fight for the Apache? But in the video, the Apache... I can't remember. Slit the dude's throat or something.

Good point Gille, which leaves mainly entertainment for the video raison d'etre

but I was kinda surprised that the Green Berets lost. I just get the impression that Green Berets are better equipped, and also more highly trained with weapon and movement techniques (like weapons handling, shooting, form/posture, etc). With that being said, I'm sure that all Spetsnaz can be a Green Beret, but not all Green Berets can be a Spetsnaz.

In Russia, those who can't survive the Spetsnaz training die.
Yes. People die in the Russian army all the time. The officers beat the recruits up all the time to make them harder. Often recruits escape from the army. If they are caught, no one hears from them ever again.
Also about the equipment, Amercan weapons arent better, even they are more modern.
As my history teacher put it, you could dig a hole to poo in with AK47, drop it in the hole, leave it in the hole for the rest of the day and then shoot with it without jamming it. Do the same with the American gun and it would become into scrap of metal. American weapons tend to be made from so many tiny peaces that move and jam all the time. Ruskies AKs have so few moving parts that they are more reliable. It's one of the reasons US lost the war in Vietnam.

Re: Green Berets or Spetsnaz
I can't say I really buy the whole "the tougher soldiers are better" argument. In modern combat I'm pretty sure (speaking as a layman) the deciding factor is almost always which side can handle themselves best as a cohesive team under the pressure of being shot at, and who makes the best tactical decisions on a moment-by-moment basis.
I think most soldiers would not like to fight with someone who is literally fearless in battle - having no fear will likely make you do things that will get you and possibly your fellow soldiers killed. Which isn't to say being tough as nails isn't beneficial - it certainly can be - but ultimately I think it's obvious to everyone that brawn doesn't go very far where modern weapons are concerned.
We all know the Spetsnaz have very tough training, but the quality of their training when applied to real situations isn't commented on nearly as much as their knife-fighting prowess or whatever. They could be the best in every way for all I know, obviously most of what they do is classified, but I do know that saying "they're the toughest" isn't a good argument.
EDIT: It's tempting to speculate the extreme brutality is a carry-over from WW2, when literally millions of soldiers threw themselves at the Germans in a suicidal but ultimately effective attempt to stop the advance. So perhaps there's an abiding strategy of having the toughest soldiers who are willing to do anything, no matter how dangerous and no matter the casualties, for their country. Of course that's pure speculation, I don't know, but if there's a grain of truth there I don't think it's the best approach you could have to training SF units. I reckon tactical ability will almost always trump sheer bravery and determination in modern warfare.

Re: Green Berets or Spetsnaz
Yeh its a bit of a redic comparison really- there are so many units with different skill sets that are considered "Spetznaz", its not like Spetznaz is 1 unit.
