July 16, 2008 Domination

First mission up, was to take the town of Corazol.

Jex and I inserted via HALO West of Corazol and slowly made our way to the outskirts of the occupied area, taking care to ensure no enemy stragglers were present.

AngelOfDeath joined the squad just as we were about to cross the forward line. Prioritizing our targets, we decided to destroy OPFOR's communication tower. We were able to infiltrate the Western side of the city, plant our satchels and exfil without casualty. After the tower blew, we attracted some attention, and in the smoke and confusion AOD and I were cut down. Jex managed to escape into the SW of the city area.

We set a rally point at the Western edge of the main bridge through town and proceeded to make our way east along main street. In an effort to avoid an UAZ patrol, we swung to the south, making our way West along the beach, clearing buildings. After bounding across a small field, we came under fire. Jex & AOD made it across and holed up in a burned out house. JAM was injured and could no longer walk.

Jex's position, although unknown to the enemy was surrounded by a T72 and 2xBRDM's. EI patrols were soon swarming the surrounding area.

I was holed up in the corner of a small courtyard, picking off patrols that came to close. I made the decision to move before I was over-run and made my way South to the beach, and then East.

AOD continued his assault from the Western side of Jex's position taking potshots at turned-out crew and fresh reinforcements.

I rendezvoused with Jeepo just as I made my way to the South wall of the building Jex was hiding in. Having parachuted into the water, Jeepo was sans weapons. I gave him my AT weapon and continued to crawl into a small tunnel underneath Jex's position. Jeepo would pop out, hit the BRDM while I rolled out and finished the bailed crew. Panzer-hans HALO'd into the area and was carefully picking his way towards me. Unfortunately, Panzer was killed while trying to step over my body at the entry of the tunnel (gg, ArmA physics). In the end, we were over-run with the arrival of another BMP and a T72.

After everyone spawned in several other people joined the server. We captured and repaired a T72 and BMP.

The single crewed T72 and BMP proceeded to drive around the city, without infantry escort, killing every last EI in the city, rendering presence of us ground pounders obsolete. So, with no semblance of tactics left or interest in methodically completing the objectives, a few of us said screw it and went to play on private server.

All in all, pretty successful infiltration and destruction of the comm. tower. We had some nice MOUT with Jeepo, Jake, Jex, and AOD. GG's.

Re: July 16, 2008 Domination

Things picked up later on last night. I don't remember all the names and details but we rolled up one of the very southern cities nicely with some slick air support by Black Dog, a two UAZ attack (the names escape me but they were regulars) and Mosley and myself working a T72 attack until we were taken out.

We switched to the one of the most northern cities and had a really tough go of it. There was so much enemy armour present that we were kept at the perimeter for a good while. Even with air support (that dissapeared into a black hole eventually ) we had a tough time taking the town out. In fact the enemy brought the fight to us on hill 193 so much so that we barely put a foot into the town save taking the tower down, they were hungry to take that hill from us.

The last town feel rather easily. Again using the hills to our advantage the main force landed on high and started to work. By the time I drove my T72 all the way around there wasn't much left. Of course what was left was pounded into the ground via the t72's main cannon in a matter of minutes.

It was good fun and the first time in a long time that I saw some good use of air and captured armor used so well.

Re: July 16, 2008 Domination

Actually, I find Domination goes to total s@# once captured armour comes into play, unless the general consensus is to play tank battles.

The point of my AAR was that it was a pretty intense experience with great comms and infantry movement into the city......methodically pushing the line of engagement farther, and minimizing our casualties.

This is lost once a few people jump in armour and drive willy nilly through the city without infantry support (thank GOD the AI can't use AT effectively) blowing the crap out of every last enemy contact to be found.

So, tell me, at this point what is the infantry squad supposed to do? Well since our presence became quite pointless, we left the server and played a great co-op elsewhere.

I can understand your comments but why not throw it up to command level (if there is one) to ask the armor boys to work with the infantry. With the current crop of players on regularly these days I think you could introduce this yourself even. I hate to see quality players like the =TE= guys leaving because of an issue like that. We want you guys on the TG server

I think you left before I started playing. We ended up co-ordinating nicely between the air and the infantry. The armor was used in the south as the two cities were only 2km apart. We drove one T72 down while the infantry loaded up into two UAZ's to make the trip. The T72 stayed to the outside and took down the obvious threats and then moved to overwatch on the radio tower. Meanwhile the infantry were working a different approach towards the tower. The T72 did do signigicant damage but the infantry were the ones sweeping the streets and blowing the radio tower, the tank never went into the city. It was combined and wouldn't have worked without the ground pounders pushing deep into the city.

The second last city no armor was used but air support was called in. The enemy here for some reason was really aggresive and we couldn't touch the city without air support. We had our hands full just beating back the infantry charging us and calling out armor targets.

I grabbed a T72 for the final city but the infantry were doing most of the work from up high. When I finally arrived they had done most of the work but were having a difficult time getting off the hill safely and taking out the last few enemy. The T72 offered the firepower needed to clear out the few pockets and allow for the infantry to close in on the town. Again the infantry were the ones that did the most and final work. The T72 was taken out after about 10 minutes of combat so at that point the infantry were all we had.

Now I wrote all that not to through it in your face but to illustrate that there can be a combined arms approach but it requires teamwork. We had lots of communication going to keep everyone safe. I would agree that if someone chooses to run and gun with armor the infantry are left to just watch. Im a ground pounder first and foremost. That night was the first time I have driven a tank in ages. It was fun and a different experince. I don't think I will do that every time but if the need arises to soften up a target I would do it again. I like a challenge and that night was challenging even with armor. If the armor made things too easy I would have left it alone. Also if anyone had of suggested leaving the armor out of it I would have gladly done so

Yeah, no, this was before you were on. I've been on many times where we have had good combined arms movement, and that's the reason I like to periodically jump on the TG server. I too enjoy the different roles in ArmA, when appropriate, and don't in any way favour restricting the availability of assets in the game (although I find it slighty ridiculous that enemy armour/aircraft are so easily captured and used)

I find it incredibly frustrating to spend 45 minutes working towards an objective, only to have it turn into a gong show, and it's not worth another 45 minutes setting it up again. That night was just another reminder of how people like to abuse ArmA, BF2 style. I obviously have some pretty clear expectations of what I expect to see on the passworded server, but I've come to realize that it's just not often available.
