Re: Operation Calm Storm! August 17th, 2008

It was just as fun the third(at least I think its the third time I played it) time as the first. Every time something goes wrong(non-technical) or poses a challenge but that's what makes it so exciting. Had a blast under Trippers command and definitely appreciated the teamwork that our recon element managed to have. For once felt like the spkr 12(spelling) was moderately useful(who took my m24...) Tito can apparently drive in pitch blackness too(just hope he doesn't think he can try it in rl...) All in all awesome mission.

Errr dont think so mate! Humvee's are not the stronges beasts in ARMA and if it happened to have been beaten up a bit you just might have hit a final rock too hard.... OR......

Maybe there was an RPG guy you knew nothing about!

I dont think there was an RPG guy or a mine. One minute we were driving, the next we were on fire and underneath the humvee pleading for a revive. No explosion or anything that I remember. I was able to make my way back to everyone else after a long while of driving around in the dark with no GPS trying to find land marks. if it wasnt for the powerlines I'd still be driving around looking for people.
I like the extra stuff that was added like that weird music and finding a civ campsite in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere. I can't wait to play this one again and not die at the beginning.

is anyone up for playing this mission again tonight? i want to apologize for my bitchassness the other night. constantly complaining about how dark it was and not having nvg's haha. i didn't know that the pilot and cia agent were controlled by actual players. i think if i had a second go at sf, i can do a better job. my orientation was a little off and want to make up for that. i think those who i led expected more of me and i let them down.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others

Re: Operation Calm Storm! August 17th, 2008

We played that mission yesterday and to me, it's the only mission that means real physical stress. Not sure if that's a good thing, though. ;-)

What annoys me is people who cramp up their gamma and brightness so they can see more than pitch blackness. It's very obvious when they call out contacts where I see nothing but black, someone pops a flare and there the contacts are. Worst thing of this is that they don't see a reason to communicate by direct chat to keep the group together. They always *see* everyone else where I do not even see my mates standing 1m away from me. I often have to crouch or go prone to see others against the non-black sky.

I am not sure whose task it is to keep the squad/ft together, but if the squad leader runs away without telling his mates, I get constantly lost and often just by chance find back to him. So imho the squad leader should always, when some larger movement is about to be done, announce that to his squad with an approximate heading and a clear "Go!" signal or something.

Another thing which reduces the fun of the mission is the possibility of pressing ESC and ESC again or return from the map view, which will then show the position of the squad leader (even in veteran mode, which seems kinda pointless). Is there any possibility of switching that off? I found the game much more fun yesterday, when I was assigned to a squad whose leader (Parabellum) was not in my original squad (so his position never popped up for me when I left the map view). He did a good job keeping us together.

So please, when you play this mission, keep your settings at normal level, you really spoil the game for those who don't "cheat" themselves out of that situation which has been made so on purpose by the mission creators. Just communicate on direct and all will be well. ;-)

Personally, I do not do any of the stuff that Bert mentioned and agree with you Bert. Does take away some of the element and realism that Blackdog was trying to create with this mission. It was a fun mission finally got a chance to play it last night, we had a good squad so that made it even better Here are some screenies from the mission:

Heading out from base

Moving along designated road

Continuing our advancement along road

Command unit and Bravo Squad waiting as the rest of the convoy became seperated after command's speedy U-turn in city

We then encountered some resistance at the Rally point which was quickly dealt with

Pilot and CIA officer saved

I personally enjoyed Operation Calm Storm and wouldn't mind playing it again

Re: Operation Calm Storm! August 17th, 2008

It's a great mission. I'm sure we'll be playing it several times, but hopefully starting earlier in the evening.

When I wrote that it was a mine that destroyed the command element, I was just kinda kidding around. We'll never know what did it, so I just blamed the explosion on a mine from a previous conflict to make the After Action Report flow a bit better.

For all I know, it could have been Mjolnir.

Sorry about that.

"command's speedy Uturn in the city" rofl!! Sorry bout that. For some reason I thought that 5tons could keep with me getting lost in Corazol LOL.. But that was a great mission to be honest... I cannot wait to try it again...
