Re: Sunday Event, 15 MAR Event AAR

Sunday Event AAR
15 1700 EST Mar 2009
~35 people

Leadership

PL (HQ Element) – Grambo
A (Inf Squad)- Jeepo
B (Inf Squad)- Tripper
C (Inf Squad)- Beta
D (AT Attachment)- Lowspeedhighdrag
E (MG Attachment)- Socomseal

Mission: WAC_co_39_light_inf_09_v103
Island: Ace Sara
Description: Blufor Inf Attack 1 hr

I was 2IC of Bravo Squad

What was supposed to happen:
Grambo began planning and then briefing people
• Overview of plan
• • His intent was to secure the hill “Monte Yorito” north of the town of Somato first
• He wanted A, D, and E to establish a support-by-fire position oriented to the Southwest to Southeast to provide cover for the assault element
• The assault element, B and C, were to move to the town of Pesto via vehicle and dismount there
• On foot, they were to follow “route red” and move to a hill “205” overlooking the town of Somato from the East
• • The HQ element would establish a CP at the town of Yoro
• • The plan was for the support element to begin engaging the town with fires once the assault element had reached hill 205
• Next, the assault element would assault towards the town of Somato from the East and begin clearing the town from East to West once they had reached it
• Once the town was cleared, the assault element would setup a defensive line in the town and prepare for a possible armor/mechanized counterattack
• The support element would remain in their support-by-fire position and provide fires to the defense
• • The medics were to attach themselves to squads and follow along
o Skychief – Goes with alpha
o Ironpants – Goes with Charlie or Bravo
• The transportation issues were to be resolved ingame

What actually happened:
• Began mission
• Began mounting up trucks-there was some confusion on who goes where, took awhile to get it all sorted out
• There was a negligent discharge at the camp
• • • Finally got the green light to begin movement to town of Pesto
• Charlie was following us
• • Arrived at the town of Pesto with no problems
• • Dismounted the trucks and began to get ready to move
• • • Began moving out in a column
o Order of movement – Charlie, followed by bravo
• • Some movement problems, the column became separated and I went to grab the separated personnel
• • Linked up with squad and order of movement was reestablished
• Support element was being engaged at this time
o Alpha reported taking fire
o Delta had some KIAs
• Began climbing hill 205 to get into position
• • Got on the hill and oriented to the West and North
• • Reports of a bmd and armor on the road to the North of us
• BMD attacked and overran cmd post at yoro and with INF support began encircling the support element
• • Delta reports all personnel are KIA
• B/C (assault) began taking fire on the hill
• • • • Realized that we are surrounded and in danger of being overrun
• • BRDM begins to assault up the hill
• Someone disables it and I kill one of the crew
• • • At this point, the assault element had multiple KIAs and WIAs
• We begin bounding off the hill to the South
o Note: you can see a UAZ on fire we destroyed and a BRDM with the two dead crew
• • The people who had died from the support element were respawned and moving back the “truck stop” drop-off point
• I sprinted south and got ahead of the element who was taking fire from the hilltop where we had just come off from
• I stopped to provide covering fire
• • We continued to move back
• • I was wounded twice, shot once, revived, shot again, but did not black out
• Finally, I died trying to drag a wounded man (Felix) back to a safe area
• Some of our squad survived
o Rampart, who took charge of survivors, and 2 other members
• The respawned began moving back to the fight
• • • Was confused about the orders the PL was giving, but finally we realized that he wanted the support element to retake the SBF position and the assault to linkup at Pesto
• • Bravo squad linked up with its survivors and moved back to Pesto
• Assault element (B and C) linked up at Pesto and established a defensive postion
• • We ended up holding Pesto for roughly 5 minutes waiting on orders
• We finally got a medic to attach to us, we did not have one until this point
• Ordered to retake hill 205 and prepare to assault town
• • Retook the hill
• Spotted an enemy encampment at the Western portion of town
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/3978/mar32.jpg
• Began assaulting down the hill towards the town
• • Alpha joined us to assault the town from the northern portion
• • Assaulted through the town
• • Took the encampment
• • Ordered to check the town of Gulan, South of Somato
• No contact made
• The PL sent the report
• Victory

Key Issues –
• Sustains
1. Individual initiative was excellent, often people oriented themselves to cover approaches, correctly spaced themselves out, threw smoke, treated wounded, and engaged if necessary. The guys with me were efficient and effective grunts
2. The concept of the operation was okay, the plan (what was supposed to happen) made tactical sense, good job PL.
3. The squad leadership, at least in my squad, was exceptional. A few instances, the SLs really stepped up and made a decision on what to do, for example, leaving hill 205 when it was being overrun
4. The commo was satisfactorily. No one really clogged the side channel and only the leaders talked on Teamspeak
5. Markers on map were adequate for the most part

• Improves
1. PL – Need to improve on decision-making and communicating the decisions. Often there were periods of long downtime where nothing was going on and the leaders did not know what was going on (I know you were thrown in after the planned PL had to bail, so good job on stepping up and leading)
2. The reconsolidations after contact were confusing and took a long time
3. It appeared that the leaders did not know the situation from time-to-time. Squad leaders, you MUST keep the PL informed of your squad’s status
4. Leaders need to communicate what is happening to the rest of the squad
5. Getting back into the fight after you died, I think in that map, you can setup a respawn point closer to the front, but I may be wrong
6. We needed a first sergeant (2IC of HQ element) to help the PL in leading the HQ element and making sure the medics were doing their jobs, not sure if we had one

Closing Comments

Overall, in my opinion, the event went well. I had fun and I hope everyone else did too.
Thanks for the event TG!

Re: Sunday Event, 15 MAR Event AAR

My first job as squad leader. It will get easier, I hope.

Igor was indispensible as my 2IC. He kept things orderly and moving along, collected lost ducks along the way, and could be counted on to give the correct orders when he wasn't receiving any. Good show.

Aside from the fact that managing 8 people is more than twice as difficult as managing 4, communication was a big problem. We had thought to split coms between in-game vox and TS, but this caused problems with multiple conversations going on at once. At times, I was trying to coordinate 2 Section and 3 Section movements with Beta via the "Local" channel, in-squad contact reports (and so forth) were being called on the "Squad" channel, and orders were being given to SLs over TS. Add to this MG fire, mortar explosions, and the screaming of the wounded, and we had ourselves a nice slice of chaos going on.

It was awesome!

Second section performed admirably in the face of my confusion. Thanks for your patience and initiative.

Overall the use of TS caused alot of confusion, SL's seemed to be confused about movment and enemy wherabouts, overall i think TS should continue to be used, realism is the name ofthe game here at TG an not every soldier has a radio!.

Re: Sunday Event, 15 MAR Event AAR

Mikko's ts settings would work great for organized events seeing as everyone needs ts to play. That would cut back on all the cross talk and allow leaders to be able to communicate with only the people they needed to. It's a real pain when your squad is telling you info and you have to hear another squad tell lead some random bit of info. If anyone has something important to say, they can say it across side channel if everyone needs to hear it. If there is a hot key for volume control so you can turn it up and down then that would work fine too. Just kinda sucks if one thing drowns out the other all the time.

Anyways, great job guys, was fun.

Re: Sunday Event, 15 MAR Event AAR

It was fun, I enjoyed myself, and have no gripes. We succeeded, and that's all that counts. PLs and SLs did their job from where I was standing.

I had to go afk at one point, and I cam back to a serious FPS drop, so I was combat ineffective at that point.

Great game, thanks to the organisers!

Re: Sunday Event, 15 MAR Event AAR

Hope to have some time later to put more thoughts down, but for now I just wanted to say - the usage of TS for high-level comms was a very welcome change on this one compared to the last Sunday event. While it may have been confusing at the leader level, at the 'normal infantryman' level it was a real blessing to be able to concentrate on shooting/moving/communicating without the constant overhead chatter that would have resulted from using, say, side VON for leader talk. I really liked how that aspect of the session was; hopefully TS can be used in the future as well. Might take some practice to get really solid with, but I think it's showing payoff even now.

Re: Sunday Event, 15 MAR Event AAR

Showed up real late for this one, but I enjoyed being part of wrapping it up.

Moving command-level communications to Teamspeak was VERY noticeable from the grunt's point of view, and it does really help alot in terms of only hearing what you need to.

Re: Sunday Event, 15 MAR Event AAR

A bit too much waiting for new orders towards the end I think. But overall it was ok. Nice to have the SL talk away from the casual grunts ears.

The respawns caused a bit of confusion, and I saw a number of people acting on their own after being respawned. I dont want to push my opinions of respawn missions on anyone though.
Overall a good game.

Re: Sunday Event, 15 MAR Event AAR

I wasn't able to attend the 15 MAR event, but I'm curious on how the TS went? Question I have is looking at the Tactical Gamer TS setup, which is:

Admin
Command Element
1 Alpha<->6 Foxtrot
Dead

How did you do the assignments? I'm assuming that the players for 1 SQD were assigned to 1 Alpha. Was there an additional channel for the SQD LDR who just talked to the TM LDRs who in turn talked to the TM?

I'm assuming again that everybody heard what was going on in their SQD.

How is it setup if you have over twenty players and they all want to talk?

Last question, is there an SOP on how it is setup?

Re: Sunday Event, 15 MAR Event AAR

TS comms were very simple.

Only the 1IC's and 2IC's were in the TS channel. Everyone else simply used in-game VOIP.

Comms went relatively smoothly, there were a few times when TS was used when in-game should have been, and a a few overly long messages sent on TS, but it worked very well.

Multiple times members from my squad kept on saying how quiet it was, and that was a good thing to them.

I can confirm it was pretty quite from the grunt's perspective. A few times wondered "Wtf is command doing, I haven't heard of them for ages!", until I remembered they're using TS
