Veteran Mode Fridays
Based on input from everybody here, we have now made Friday "Veteran's Night" on Server #1. What this means is that you all better learn how to use a compass and understand map reading.
In Veteran Mode, you no longer have the aid of seeing you or your teammates' positions on a map; nor the enemy for that matter. You are heavily reliant on using a map and compass to navigate to your objectives. You also have to learn to do terrain association to determine your location, not an easy task. This makes game play so much more fun by making it realistic. That being said, you have two options, hope for a mission that utilizes a GPS or come online and learn how to read a map. We will be taking the time to teach basic map reading to any and all that come online on Friday nights. Do not be afraid to ask for help from some of the regulars that are online, it is better to ask than be thrust into a leadership position and get your team lost. If you cannot make it on Friday nights to learn, send one of the admins a PM and we can set a time to go over it with you. Make sure you check the server schedule for Server #1 for all the events. Good luck!! This weekly event is also listed in our Community Calendar. Follow the link to request a reminder for this event.

Re: Veteran Mode Friday
You may force me to read the map but you'll never make me read the briefing!!.
Sounds good, I've never had any formal instruction in navigation maybe I can learn something. In game I've been in it so much I can pretty much tell where I am now in most parts of the islands but not all. I know the southern island by heart but not much about the northern parts of the big island. |

Re: Veteran Mode Fridays
Quick question: How does ArmA incorporate magnetic deviation and can you actually manipulate the compass with respect to direction of travel and the orientation arrow?
Most of my familiarity with map+compass navigation is from Boy Scouts a decade ago. Hoping to join you guys on Friday. |

Re: Veteran Mode Fridays
There is no deviation from true north to magnetic north in game. That being said, having to implement this would cause havoc on the beginners trying to learn to read a map. I will look into that!
In AmrA it is fairly simple. The map is always pointing north or up. Whereas the compass points in the direction that you are moving/facing. The best way to experience this is to try and use the compass a bit more during the other night to start gaining confidence in your skills. The worst case scenario you can always look at the map on those nights and compare it to the green marker.

Re: Veteran Mode Fridays
I can pretty painlessly figure out my location and where I need to go, but how about locating squad members when they use their radio and it adds in their position before the message. Of course I am assuming the "EG72" etc. is their grid location. I have looked at the map and haven't yet been able to figure it out.
I was in an Air Cav game this morning and a guy spotted the convoy but I couldn't figure out his location and therefore his message was worthless. We ended up missing the convoy and losing the map. Is a printable map located somewhere as a desk reference? Edit: Found it on wiki. Last edited by miyamoto; 03-21-2007 at 04:08 PM. |

Ahhh yes! Can't wait until next Friday! Plenty of experience here from playing the OFP Invasion 1944 mod. We'd all spawn in parachutes at a random deviation and wouldn't say a word until we all met at our rally point before moving onto our objective. Serious nostalgic attack! I'll go calm down now. -_-

Re: Veteran Mode Fridays
Perhaps posting this in the main forums would help generate interest? As it is i mainly play PR, but have asked many of the regulars there if the are up for a switch to ArmA to see how we get on, and they agreed. However, not sure how many actually check the Forum....

That is a great idea, I second it.
Yet I have a little tiny question. Since there is no declination diagram on the map, how do we find the magnetic north, the grid north and the true north?...Will the conversion of the magnetic azimuth to grid be addressed? Or to know what magnetic bearing to take from my plotted azimuth on the map thus converting from grid azimuth to magnetic?...By the way which part of the world the map is from? Europe, USA, Africa, Asia?...Cuze the angle might be different?... Sorry, I just realized we are not taking those variations into consideration. Which is good. The other day I tried with my compass in one hand and my mouse in the other, it was really difficult; the magnetic north of the compass was swirling like a wind mill. Then I had to open the window to check on the stars and there was too many clouds and light pollution. For a minute I was revisiting the meaning of TGIF, and really getting nervous. My CO was waiting for me on hill 32. And I had an epiphany; it is taking care of by the game, not to worry anymore. I took my hat off, looked at the CEO&I, authentified my station and told my CO I had a rough week and I will be watching some rerun of Mister Ed...TGIF Gunny

Re: Veteran Mode Fridays
Yup I'm in too.
Veteran is tuff but it makes your game play much better as it removes a lot of the hints from the map ie your location. Spend some time before engaging the enemy on familarising yourself with the battle area. That will give you some idea of where you are then when the enemy is closing in and you want a heli pick or a speedy Hummer dash and grab you'll be able to give a quick call out. Of course you could call out the sat-nav ID if that is on in Veteran better though to give the map ref plus a building/hilltop for precision. I try to keep an eye on where I am ref the main targets which are named on the map, then I can quickly call say I'm 200Mtrs SE of the radio tower. But then in the heat of battle sometimes it is just too late for anything other than dropping your pants and kissing your butt goodbye. LOL See yaz all kissin the dirt tryin to stay alive..... COVERING FIRE!!! Barnaby |

Ju a crazy man John... ;-)
Maybe only on the CoOp Server.. (I think that's the NON EVO server..) but we don't want to scare off the Atari's New guys... ..But the more you play on it..the more you start to be able to easily recognize units, enemy Soldiers, tanks etc...
