Re: This doesn't seem fair....
Here's the real question, would you want the enemy to use it on you? Cause I think I could talk a few of the Mod Dept people to write one up where you have to take 2 C-130's out by any means. Talk about a slaughter fest just waiting to happen. Give them CAP protection, and this would be an insanely hard mission to complete. AI running the Specter.... gives me shivers...

Re: This doesn't seem fair....
Ouch. That would be a mess. How do you take on of those things out? Wikipedia suggests that a couple were lost to 20-37mm ack ack in Vietnam, but Wikipedia also suggests that only about five were lost in the whole war, and most of those were really lucky shooting on the part of the AAA crews.
Though I think one may have been brought down by a Grail MANPADS. |

Re: This doesn't seem fair....
My dad was the rear crew cheif in one of these in Veitnam. He told me that he, and I, almost were not to be. They were flying back from a mission and he watched a SAM launch behind them. As it was spiralling at them, the pilot banked left and right trying to throw the missile off. As they were banking back to the left, the missile hit the outer left prop right at where the blades attach to the engine. They were flying at about 5000ft. when the missile did not explode. it was a dud, but it still sheared the prop blades off the motar mount. They started limping back to base, but were losing altitude and could not fly strait. The Pilot turned off the outer right engine to compinsate for the pushing effect, and my dad ordered everything in the back to be dumped to lighten the plane. Considering the plane, with armor and armaments, was 29000lbs. overweight on take off, they attached rocket packs to the rear of the plane for take off. Well, after they pushed everything that could be unbolted and tossed out the side doors, they were still losing altitude. So, my dad decides to take the jet fuel from the turned off and hit engines and feed the fuel lines into those rocket packs. It worked and kept them in the air just long enough to land at base. When they were landing, they were so low that they were taking 3-5" diameter trees out with the wings. He got a 2 week R&R while they fixed the plane.

Re: This doesn't seem fair....
The plane flown in Vietnam was the original version, an AC-47. The newer versions are the AC-130H Specter and the AC-130U Spooky. The Specter was first flown in September of 1989, while the Spooky came up in December of 1990. They are very good for close, accurate air support and can take out just about any ground target except for hardened bunkers. They can pretty much only be used after air superiority has been established, as they have no real way of defending themselves from air attack.

Re: This doesn't seem fair....
Actually, it was a 4 engine C-131 codenamed Puff the Magic Dragon. It had 3x105 howiters 4x20mm gatlings and 2x50mm chainguns. They could put a bullet every square inch of a football field. And when the howiters fired at the same time the plane would shift 30 ft sideways in the air. I've seen pictures with my dad in front of it. It was a C-130 class plane, not the AC-47. The C-131 actually had advanced radar, nightvision and ECM. That and it's armements were about the only difference from the C-130 transport.

Re: This doesn't seem fair....
The only reference I have ever seen to a C-131 gunship was a C-131B that was used in testing for the Tailchaser project in the mid 60s. Puff The Magic Dragon was the name given to the AC-47 by the troops in Vietnam.

Re: This doesn't seem fair....
You may be thinking of the Sikorsky S-61R Pelican, also known as the "Jolly Green Giant".

Re: This doesn't seem fair....
I thought puff the magic dragon was just a song...
Would be the worst thing ever seeing the rocket plumes get fired out and literally see just a rocket coming towards you.... How many did we even have in Vietnam though? |

Re: This doesn't seem fair....
It was a song by Peter, Paul, and Mary from that era. It was apparently popular enough among the military personnel to nickname an aircraft.
