Re: Helicopter Guru
you can also acess the heli's in the armory (and everything else) by doing this:
hold "left shift" and the keypad "-" (minus key) for a second, then release and type "getallgear". you wont see what you are typing, but if you did it right, everything in the armory will be available for you to try out. you have to do this every time you want to get full acess. this makes it easy to try out all the aircraft, and other goodies. ![]()

Re: Helicopter Guru
Thanks Redd_Wiggler. I made a flight mission with all the helicopters setting on the ground and then I select which one I want to fly. It also has a target range in it for me to target practice.

Re: Helicopter Guru
Ok, Jex question for you beens you have config your x45 for ArmA.
This is what I have setup and haven't tested it yet. Also this is just the aircraft controls for my x45 joystick. Throttle -increase thrust - stick slider 1- -decrease thrust - stick slider 1+ Rudder -left pedal - stick Z - rotate -right pedal - stick Z = rotate Bank Left - stick X - axis Bank Right - stick X + axis Nose Down - stick Y - axis Nose Up - stick Y + axis Fire - Stick Btn #1 Eject - Stick Btn #8 I left the gear down/up and the flaps down/up as they are in default. I'm assuming that when you said weapon select you mean toggle weapons and that when you said look closer you mean zoom?

Re: Helicopter Guru
Hot dam I did it jex and everybody else who help me out. I was able to fly at treetop level and did a flare by bottom the collective and pull back on the stick and did a sliding forward landing. Also did all this without even using the AH at all. This is way cool. Now to stop talking and fly some more. I will be ready by next week to tackle the new part and that is to work with another pilot on commands.

Re: Helicopter Guru
jex or anybody else, is there a group that plays ArmA but only the air assets only? I would like to get with the group on training with them and to work on the flight commands and radio procedures.
I did one thing last night when flying and that was assigning a button for the Eject and I mistakenly hit it and eject out of a good helicopter ![]() I need to reassign it to a button that is covered up on my x45 stick so that you have to flip the cover up to hit the button ![]()

Re: Helicopter Guru
Thanks Shafik. Hey jex I was able to fly at an alt of 35 to 50 meters above ground and was flying over the treetops at about 120 knots. I'm thinking on getting on the TG server and show you this weekend if your interested.

![]() There aren't any helo only missions on the server and the missions that do include helo's tend to have limited roles for pilots, or the overpowering, piss-off-grunts-on-the-ground Cobra. However, we can meet on TS and either one of us can host a mission (either DL'd or we'll make one). |

Re: Helicopter Guru
Who said that you can't walkaway from a rough landing
![]() I was trying touch and go landing where I come in hot and touch the ground with my wheels and then count to three and then takeoff again and I lost it on the third time. I got out and walked away along with my crewman.

Re: Helicopter Guru
jex on your x45 setup, how much of friction do you have it setup for the throttle? Also what is the best alt for flying? I can go as low as 9 meters to up to 50 meters. I went so low at one time that my skids on my MH6 was throwing up dirt

The best altitude for flying is whatever the situation demands. In friendly airspace as high as possible because height gives you time to auto-rotate and land safely. More height = more options for crash landing. In enemy territory you're either low or very low . Personally I'd fly a little above treetop level and if I start taking fire then look for the safest exit (which may mean in between trees or going high and jinking). Make sure you are travelling at high speed as speed = energy = optons. Your main concern as a pilot is the people on board your chopper. Flying very low takes a lot of concentration and one little slip-up means YOU kill everybody. Therefore, unless you absolutely have to, flying very low should not be on your list of things to do. I'm also not yet convinced that trees are a good source of cover. It seems once the AI have you locked up, they'll fire through everything except hills. My best success at avoiding fire is to climb sharply and then dive and head for the nearest low ground/hill, jinking all the way, to put between me and the enemy. Always be looking for escape vectors. Think to yourself, if I come under fire, or my engine flames out, where is the best place to go? Of course, you are at the mercy of the mission designer because if the shilka skill level is set to ace, I'm not sure you'll have much of a chance to avoid it. This is where good planning pays off to never get near it in the first place. Some pilots think that the ability to fly low is what makes them a good pilot. The best pilots are those with the ability to get their mission done with no casualties (other than those inflicted on the enemy of course ). However, that being said, you need to practice and become proficient at all aspects of flying. With regards to how low you can go, under 5m is possible to maintain given the terrain. Start of slow, hold a low altitude, then keep speeding up a little, etc. This way you'll learn how collective/stick input can keep you low. Even though flying is relatively easy in arma, it happens to be a complex subject when you add all the other considerations, hence the long reply. Following on from this perhaps we should start to work on a "flying guide to arma" that addresses all these questions. We could make a test mission and get input from everyone here on how they do things and then collate it to make a definitive document. |
