Re: Helicopter Guru

While I'm waiting for the practice sheet from jex, I have some questions that is for anybody.

Where can I find the map legend?

Besides the setting of the flight controls and having a voice activated microphone instead of push to talk, which I found out real fast during my first flying lessons what other keys should I be concern about for flying?

Is there an example of how to do flight planning and in flight navigation?

Another issue is AH, I was flying around a small town and was trying to land on top of the roof with AH off it was totally hard for me. But when I used the AH it was easy. I was able to land without destroying myself. I came in around 80 feet off the ground, turn on AH and landed with no problem, when I was ready to lift off the AH was off and had no problem. Is that the correct way to do it and is it necessary to practice doing that?

Last question and it may have been asked before and that is "When should you use AH and When you shouldn't be using AH".

Re: Helicopter Guru

There is no map legend as far as I'm aware other than the contour and distance one.

Keys needed for changing weapons, target selection, fire, eject. Can't really think of anymore right now.

Don't use AH full stop if you want to learn quicker. Using Ah will just slow your progression and you should only use it as a last resort to get yourself orientated again

jex, same time this Saturday as last Saturday?

Still waiting for the practice sheet. Also I was practicing flying on a map labeled "Schmalfelden" - Germany map. Pretty cool just like being over there

Re: Helicopter Guru

About the only time I use AH is when I want to slow down drastically and I dont feel like sliding the mouse so far, I just pop AH on and it lifts the nose then I turn it right back off... works very nicely. Also, I dont know if its trumods or not, but when I roll my mouse wheel to select AH, to turn it off all I have to do is hit the action key again and it automatically turns AH off.. I dont have to roll thru the menu again.. that little trick helps me out a good bit.

Re: Helicopter Guru

Yes, I have a button on my collective stick set for AH and all I have to do is click it once its on, click it the second time its off. Allot faster then using the mouse.

Re: Helicopter Guru

I also recommend not using auto-hover. Flying a helicopter requires a very fine control touch that cant be learned any other way than through practice. Auto-hover offers nothing for those wanting to improve their skills. Its a crutch and can be counter-productive.

Re: Helicopter Guru

Wow. I can't believe nobody has mentioned Dslyecxi's very informative Littlebird MH-6 Insertion/Extraction Training video yet.

It's his usual high quality work. In just 5 minutes and 11 seconds, he covers all the basics; mission and route planning, approach, touchdown, and escape/evasion. The landing on a rooftop is a thing of beauty.

If you want to see how he does with a larger heli, there's a two minute video of him as a UH-60 pilot that one of his passengers uploaded to Youtube titled Shacktac - Hot Insertion - Arma. This one was done under fire with a full load. Again, no wasted motion. Just low into the LZ, flare, drop, unload, and get out. He makes it look so bloody easy!

Unfortunately, I haven't reach the minimum of 15 posts to give you direct links to them. However, if you search Google videos for dslyecxi or the titles they should show up. Well worth the time for any pilot or wannabe pilot (like me!).
