OFP had "general", "team", "vehicle" and "squad" VOIP channels, I wouldnt think they removed any of them.

Thanks Dawolf... I missed the boat on OFP's MP part and didnt know there was a "squad comm" channel to let the SLs communicate with each other.

Re: 4 Short Videos (Swimming, Building Destruction, ...)

Cool videos. But did anyone else think the "dynamic destruction" looked kinda silly. I mean they could have slowed the fall rate and added a bit more rubble. It just looks the the building is falling through the earth. Oh well, at least they are destructible.

As far as I know it will be the same as in OpFlash. Global/Team/Squad/Vehicle channels.

I'll try and find the source but I think I read this a very long time ago. There will definitley be VOIP but I cannot find solid evidence that you can use VOIP in different channels. IMO they would have to allow intersquad comms because there could be hundereds of players on a server at any one time.

Re: 4 Short Videos (Swimming, Building Destruction, ...)

The animation for the building destructino is a placeholder, from what I've read on the official forums.

Rick-the-sorta-new-guy, glad you have interest in Arma. There will be multiplayer modes for every sort of player. Between city deathmatches and Capture the island games that stretch across the entire 400km2 island, it should absolutely amazing.

To be honest, failure of RO and even worse, KIA status of OFP are not good signs. These dont tell us that ArmA will fail here but no one can deny the fact that these indicate what majority of TG prefers to play...or not to play.
You should consider the fact that many TG-ers came here with the BF2 wave (a mainstream game by definition) - heck, even I did. Therefor most might not have been interested in niche games yet (and games like RO, SWAT and OFP are just that) or even aware of their existence and potential.
Take RO for example: WW2 based, multiplayer only, (almost) Steam only, steep learning curve, high realism, hard to play in an organized way without a dedicated team etc. You have to like/tolerate/be willing to try all of these factors in order to give the game a chance. Even then, you might not find playing partners or might not even be aware that the game exists.
Or OFP: a game way before of its time (I tried to play its demo in Quake style back in 2001 when it appeared and abandoned it after half an hour), many bugs at release, again steep learning curve, niche genre and quite closed community (mil-sim fans), huge difficulties in organizing multiplayer games (no join-in-progress; once dead, you're out), currently graphically outdated out-of-the-box (although heavily enhanced by community; the huge number of mods combinations might also be a drawback) and hard to find.

Long story short, most community members might only need to be educated and guided towards these. On this note, the best promoting method I've seen were the rich, detailed, passionate, media-supported AARs on dslyexci's website which made me very eager to give OFP another chance. Maybe front page promotions of this kind of reports might have the same effect for ArmA?

Will definitely do. But more important than that, community needs "Playing Guides"; How to play a game like RO and ArmA as a squad? What are some simple organizational procedures you can use for cohesion and structure in-game?

A game like RO assumes that an organized unit is entering the battlefield. Reality is quite different.

Filling the gap and bringing order to the chaos are upto the self-motivated and active leaders/organizers and enthusiastic/serious community members.

There are a few connections with BF2 in respects to all the vehicles you can use but the game is much less arcade-like. ArmA will be much more realistic than BF2 and will probably be more 'intense' bceause of the greater punishments for being killed (no respawns on some gametypes).

There will be a variety of gametypes like Co-op, capture the flag, search and destroy, basic deathmatches etc. There is another gametype called "Capture the Island" which I am looking forward to. Imagine BF2 on a much more massive scale. The control points are villages dotted all over the island.

There will also be many more players on a single server than in BF2. Oh, I nearly forgot, there is a squad system built into ArmA so squads can easily communicate with each other.
Thanks for the sit-rep.

Done!

I am liking it more and more.

Re: 4 Short Videos (Swimming, Building Destruction, ...)

I was really disappointed RO never took off with TG. I've been playing it since Beta 1.0 several years ago and I thought for sure this realistic style WWII game would be right up TGs alley. Unfortunately it was not accepted by the masses. I really hope ArmA has a better chance. I loved OFP but the inability to join a multiplayer game in progress is what killed it for many. It looks like ArmA has all the right features to be a TG hit...if the players accept it that is.

BTW, that night battle video looks incredible!

Re: 4 Short Videos (Swimming, Building Destruction, ...)

By the true gods!! this thing is a sim.

After checking out this link and looking at new pic on the right, I feel a little intmidated. I sort of know what a Azimuth is from reading books on the 101st Division's LRRP, but I do not know what to do with it.

Being a civilian puke, will I need to study up on some stuff before starting this game?

Rick, I believe this is the page you meant to link:

http://www.bis-ingame.net/gallery,li...m-release.html

The new shot that has an azimuth in it is actually a shot of the mission editor.

Re: 4 Short Videos (Swimming, Building Destruction, ...)

Thanks Champ.

you know, this thread has a lot of members from the summer of 2005.

I trust BF2 caused this boom or was it OFP?

Oh, darn...My girlfriend will so punish me when I bring home yet an other game like this. How ever, looking at the available info and screenies, the game looks awesome. Especially the terrain and the urban enviroment.

I have one concern though. With maps being able to be so huge, will they even be playable unless there is a very high number of players on the server(s)?

Re: 4 Short Videos (Swimming, Building Destruction, ...)

Greetings Steiner,

That is a good question. Being a sim, I'd wager that is how it is in Real Life sometimes with a skirmish and such. Having 0 experiance points with such a game, I really do not know what to tell you.

I just hope you can see much farther in BF2, because in RL I'd say action takes place much farther away when not in a town (suburb figthing)
Expect, I'll be there.
