Re: Sat, June 16th - ShackTac, TacticalGamer, and SimHQ Joint Session Details

I appreciated the opportunity to play in such an event and it was very interesting to participate in large scale missions with multiple platoons full of players. It was great to see ArmA can handle over 64 players on a server without degrading gameplay, as well. The first mission was the highlight for me and that particular battle drill is something I would like to see TG use to start incorporating better communications protocols within our community. The World War I vintage dogfight was an interesting twist, but seemed to be a waste of time to me.

Arcadia Hotel seemed like it could have been a lot of fun, but my squad had problems getting ready and I spent most of it just following my Squad Leader around in circles. Unfortunately, he disconnected and I was too far from our fire teams to be of any use to them. The nighttime setting may have hindered gameplay, as well, with so many players on our side being unfamiliar with each other.

A lot of the confusion and waiting between missions seemed to revolve around making sure someone filled a Squad Leader or Fire Team Leader slot. It may help to assign leadership positions before the next session. Regular large scale sessions between communities could be a lot of fun with a little more coordination.

I enjoyed it and hope to use the lessons I learned while playing to help further promote tactical play within ArmA. My thanks to Dslyecxi for putting this event together.

It was a simple drill that entailed clearing a town of enemy forces. The setup was very basic, but assigned everyone to a position and forced us to communicate at different levels (Platoon Commander down to Fire Team Leaders) using TeamSpeak. While TG might not have enough members playing ArmA to conduct a large scale mission like that one, something similar could be created for a squad clearing a checkpoint or another smaller strategic point.

Here's a video of the Camel Dogfight.

I'll have some comments about the session later as well.
