Few things I do:
Listen to the rotor RPM, anticipate what the helicopter is going to do so you can make collective adjustments ahead of time because there is delay from the time you make inputs to the time the helicopter reacts. Get a feel for where the tail rotor is at all times, this is really important in the UH-60 because if you come screaming into the LZ and need to do a huge flare to stop, you have to remember that your tail is gonna be hanging down probably as much as 15+20 feet. In arma if you so much as tap the ground with it the tail at medium speed you will cause serious damage. Avoid maneuvers that will put the helicopter in a high rate of descent, its usually impossible to pull out of them. When flying low and fast don't look at objects that are near, always look out in the distance somewhat to get an idea of how high the treetops are or if you are gonna fit in between them. If you try to judge that when the objects are close and moving fast in your window, you will either misjudge them or pull away thinking you are gonna to crash when you would have been fine. Also try to remember about that damn powerline, it still gets me sometimes. When you are landing try to shoot an approach at consistent angle with your airspeed decreasing gradually to 0 as you reach your LZ. A big problem alot of keyboarders have is they fly in low enough and fast enough to make it to the LZ but they never start a real approach, they just pull back at the last minute and this causes them to balloon waaay up high into an unprotected hover. If they are lucky nobody saw them but its still dangerous because they now have to do a completely vertical landing from 100m and they can't see anything directly below them. Assuming everyone survived the landing there is one more reason not to do it this way, it takes quite a bit longer. One more thing I can think of, fog sucks, if you are gonna punch through it, don't even try it until you are higher than any obstructions along your intended route. You can't use the altimeter in arma for flying instruments, it always works as a radar altimeter so its gonna crazy when you are going over the mountains. What you can do is climb above the mountains before entering the fog, then use the VSI (vertical speed indicator) just keep it at 0 and you will be holding a constant altitude above sea level. |

Wensday, June 27, I intend to be online half the day just fooling arround w/ flying.... If anyone would like to make this a training session on the public server feel free to join me. should be online from arround 4PM EST till the devil (wife) comes home... with the occasional intteruption of being the personal tech support for the mother-in-law....
