Re: Do you like using tanks in coop?
I was thinking of having around 8 T-72's and maybe 2-4 BMP's but making them random in where they come from to keep up the replayability. The troops would need the M1 Tank Platoon close by to take out the enemy armour and support the assault.
The ideal situation would be to have a large frontal assault with the troops and the M1's on the flanks or hull down in overwatch supporting the assault. But if a T72 just rolls over a hill and instantly spots the M1 and takes it out then there's no point continuing.
I also don't want it where the tanks are killing everything leaving most of the players pissed off that htey aren't seeing any action. In RL troops love the idea of heavy support vehicles but in FPS, the inverse of that is true.
I want to make the mission a coordinated assault where the action is happening all around giving everyone something to do and I want the tanks to be an integral part of that by limiting the amount of AT available. As it stands I can just add the tanks in anyway and chuck in a load of AT figuring the tanks won't really get used.
Another question though - any point in including a tank commander? Or would the driver swap between the roles?Jex.

Re: Do you like using tanks in coop?
I'd rather see a vehicle commander and a vehicle driver than a command/driver mix. Splitting the roles allows the commander to maintain better SA overall and control the vehicle better than when he gets to command and drive as well.
I don't mind tanks or other armor/combined forces ops but a great number of missions that are on TG are more or less inf only or inf focused meaning that combined forces is an area that we are pretty weak in.
An interesting mission concept might be to base a mission or two around the first Russian armored columns into Grozny in (IIRC) '95 or so.

Re: Do you like using tanks in coop?
Yeah, if for nothing else then at least because it makes target spotting much easier. The gunner's view is very limited and the driver's even more so, so someone with good instruments for scanning around while on the move is a must.
Yesteday I got to play as armor after a long pause in one mission on the ACEIP Uwar-desert map, and I must say it was quite fun. In an open environment like that you can just bump up the viewdistance, which pretty much tilts the balance to the other way vs. AI. The AI is pretty retarded what comes to long range engagements, so with a VD of for example 5000 meters you can just sit in a nice position and drop the AI armor as they come into view. They won't spot you for a good few thousand meters yet. With a proper tank FCS this would be even easier.Last edited by Fincuan; 03-31-2009 at 04:20 PM.

Re: Do you like using tanks in coop?
How many enemy infantry were you planning? Respawn or one life? City or open terrain? Depending on the answers to those questions 8 tanks supported by 2 to 4 BRDM's, with I'm guessing a company or so of infantry would be meant for a respawn mission. 40 something Bluefor against that many targets would give everyone a lot to kill but then again we would more than likely get killed first. In a one life mission, this would be something I would not really care to play due to the odds being too extreme. You wouldn't send a plt of infantry with a plt of tanks to handle something like that, at least I wouldn't feel it would make tactical sense to attack that much of a greater force. A defense mission would be more feasible though since you don't get to pick what the enemy throws at you.

Re: Do you like using tanks in coop?
Properly used a tank/apc can make a huge difference... I remember driving the BMP-2 in Gunship Troopers, all crewmen had VoIP, we survived for the whole duration of the mission and it was really fun
.
Not to count that we avoided one T72 shell (which hit the pickup I used as cover) and 4 M136 rockets.
In other missions I've seen tanks mostly scouting ahead or leaving without infantry support, that will lead to disabled tanks in a matter of seconds.Last edited by Skychief; 03-31-2009 at 04:40 PM.

Every played Beasts of Steel? That's a brilliant map for tank usage. You've got to remember that some people come in from clans in groups of 3 or 4, and putting them all together in a tank is good, as they should be coordinated between them.
