"The javelin sucks" How to use javelin.

I have heard this time and time again since we have updated to ACE. The Javelin does not suck: it has near 100% accuracy and 1 round will usually destroy any armored vehicle, at a range of 75-2500+ meters. It is the most advanced and most accurate ATGM system currently deployed. The reason why your javelins are missing is because you are using them wrong, and in the process costing the military $80,000 a pop. I hope this gets stickied. How to use javelin:

    1. Get target in cross hair
    2. Hold down right click for 5 seconds
    3. Press space bar, you will see the target be locked, if not, see step 1 & 2.
    4. Release right click/zoom out
    5. Fire.

If you did it correctly the javelin should (IMPORTANT) shoot upward, not on a flat trajectory.

Note: The javelin will seek the target, and is perfectly accurate at engaging moving targets at 2500+ meters. It will hit the top armor, where it is most thin, and has near 0 chance of hitting friendlies due to the upward and downward trajectory.

Moved this to Tactics forum where it is more appropriate. If this thread doesn't get a lot of views by tomorrow, I'll sticky it so it doesn't get lost in the sauce.

Thumbs up Re: "The javelin sucks" How to use javelin.

Your procedure, tyrspawn, is pretty well thought out and I hope more jav operators will follow it since it should guarantee a lock, thanks to double-checking if the target was identified with the Spacebar, however there is one thing I should point out: at this moment, the minimum range is wrong; IRL the Jav has a min. range of 75m, but I tested the missile various times and if fired within aprox. 200m the missile will explode prematurely above the target, without inflicting damage.

Other than that, I hope more people will read about this.

Those in the know: is there a way to switch between the top-attack and direct trajectories? Real-world, top-attack is for anti-armor while direct attack is for nailing bunkers and such.

Not yet -- it was a standard feature of ACE1 (along with a lot of other things that are missing), but to the best of my knowledge it is planned for a future release.

PhilippRauch has said that hes working on getting the Javelin concept, as well as some other digital weapon concepts, to ACE 2.
If true, the operation of the Javelin may change drastically in the future (you have to tag the targets manually)

That's nice to know. I hoped to see his Jav FCR in ACE1, but no luck. Hopefully we'll get something for ACE2.

Regarding the Jav trajectories, the missile will climb more the farther away the target is. However even in ACE1, when you could "force" the missile to utilize either the Top-Down or Direct flight path, the trajectory was never working like the IRL thing: unless the target was 3km away, the missile tended not to climb enough, and there was really no noticeable difference between Hi and Low, other than the fact that in Top-Down the Jav tended to overshoot slightly and miss the target, even with a good lock. I quickly learned that it was generally better to employ the Jav in Direct mode bar exceptions, rather than the other way around like IRL.

Is "pressing the spacebar" using the command menu thingy that tells you range to/type of target?

    What is "right click"?

A lot of people have rebound their keys (myself included) so it would be nice to know exactly what these keys are representing.

1)Yes, when we said "press Spacebar" we meant to use the command cursor: the javelin, like any other self-guided weapon in ArmA2 has to "spot" the target. Since on this server the usual "target box" is disabled, by recalling the command cursor you can see wether the target nametag appears or not; if it does, it means the Jav is "seeing" the target.

    2) with "right click" tyrspawn meant "press the Right Mouse Button", thus zooming in on the target and spotting/identifiying it. Why you have to I.D. the target in this way is explained above.

During... God, now I can't recall the mission, But during the misson where a spec ops team parachutes in to stop a convoy north of the main objective, I managed to kill a BMP at a range of something like 30-50 feet with the javelin. It was sheer panic fire, but it did score a kill. Your mileage, obviously, may vary.

Or you could use this mod while ACE implements proper javelin usage.

Basically holding right click will produce a lock for a top-down attack while simply firing will be direct-attack wire-guided mode. The direct attack seems to break after about a kilometer though (at least in local tests in the editor).

Damnit Blizzard, fix ZvT already >.<

Re: "The javelin sucks" How to use javelin.

Given the importance of the Javelin and the fact that we now use Mando Missile Addon, here's a brief tutorial on how this AT weapon works now.

First off, here is the interface of the Command Launch Unit:

in this screenshot you can see the normal lights you would see when operating the Javelin: "DAY" stands for normal camera (no thermal imaging) and "TOP" means "Top-down attack mode"

in this screenshot I activated the thermal view of the CLU: the "WHOT" spy means that any heat shource will show up white on a black bacdrop (unfortunately ArmA2 does not simulate FLIR systems properly, so this view mode is mostly useless). Also, you can see the "DIR" means "Direct Attack mode".

same as the previous screen, only that this time the "BHOT" spy is on, meaning that heat sources will be showed as black on a white backdrop (again, mostly useless). Also note that both the "DIR" and "GRND" spy are on, meaning that the Javelin has been set up to achieve lock on any spot you point at and lock on with the Tab key.

To use the Javelin with MMA on you must follow these steps:
    1) find the target
    2) aim at the target
2.5) switch to "TOP", "DIR" and "DIR+GRND" depending on the situation
    3) press the TAB key
    4) keep the crosshair on the target until the 4 red brackets close on the target and 2 white lines appear forming a cross on the screen. Also the lower right orange spy will be shut off (that spy indicates that the missile has not a lock on anything)
    5) fire the Javelin
    6) watch the explosions

    Differences between modes.
"Top-Down": in top-down attack mode the Javelin will climb in altitude and then strike the target from the top. This is the standard operating mode of the Javelin.
"Direct": in direct attack mode the Javelin will have a shallower trajectory. This mode should be utilised if the target is very close or is under a roof of some sort (like in an hangar). This is not the standard mode since the Javelin will hit the sides of the tank (reducing the effectiveness) and allows the target to utilise cover to block the LOS of the missile.
"Direct-Ground": this mode is utilised when you have to target a building. Unlike the previous modes the lock on is instantaneous, but if the target moves (i.e: you used it on a vehicle) the javelin will not chase the target (you locked on those coordinates, not on the object you aimed at).

    Example of Top-Down attack on a T90:
    1) we have to achieve a lock

notice the 4 red brackets around the tank and the orange spy in the bottom-right corned of the HUD: the Javelin has yet to achieve a positive lock.

    2)locked on

the red box disappeared, the "no lock" spy is turned off and the "SEEK" spy is on: this means that the Javelin has locked onto the T90 and you can now fire the missile.

    3)impact

the Javelin has hit the T90. The "No Lock" spy is turned on along with the "No Missile Loaded" light to the left.

Ground attack works in a similar way:
    1)locked

    2)hit

Note that the Javelin is a poor anti-infantry and a passable anti-structure weapon, and as such should be reserved for heavily armored targets only.

Thank you for that Merula, the first post should be amended with this new information.

EDIT: They seriously need to lower the volume on that beeping sound. I heard someone say to lower the music volume but I have the music volume all the way down...
