Perhaps it is clear to others, but what the hell are they doing? Are those real people? Crash-test dummies? "Alien" abductees?

Ah, ok.

In a basic nutshell - leaving out detailed information for sake of simplicity - a chopper comes by, hovers, drops a rope. Squad on the ground runs up to the rope, hooks on, and the chopper flies away with the squad in tow.

Used in very specialized situations.

LOl still looks dangerous and a bit rediculous. I can't imagine a situation for this. Perhaps if you have the time to land safely, but the ground is unfit for landing. I hope they can be pulled into the chopper mid flight, as it would get mighty cold dangling on that line.

I've seen this numerous times on military documentaries. It's called "Special Patrol Insertions and Extractions" and is a way of fast-extracting from zones where a full landing is impractical.
