Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.
I dunno where you live in UK (I live in the sticks in scotland) I got a crossbow. Just as good as a rifle for hunting if it was required. I woulden't get one if you live in a city however.
It would have to be a pretty big disaster as well because hunting anything is not really legal in the UK unless you got a licence or its a pest (but you have to use an airgun).

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.
You're just trying to survive a mild disaster, eh? Well. Your list is fine. Just add the following:
Heat tablets
Survival knife, and not one of those fancy 900 dollar combat blades. Ka-Bar does just fine.
Entrenchment tool. You're going to need to dig, cut wood, and it doubles as a weapon. And a better one than a knife, mind you. It also fits nicely in a bag.
At LEAST get a damn two man tent, or some kind of cover.
And the foil blankets are great, but you need a real blanket to go over it. Trust me. Get wool. It keeps you warm when wet, and it's relatively thin and folds up nicely.
A first aid kit, and some antibiotics. You're liable to get some kind of wicked infection tromping around the woods. So go fake sick and get a prescription.
Wool socks, two pairs. You can wear them when sleeping and it doesn't sap the heat out of your body.
Candles
And you should be good.

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.
You would probably be better off talking to you GP about your needs. If you explain to them that you want some antibiotics/medications in case of a disaster(I.E New Orleans), you may very well get it, and they will be able to hook you up properly. Rather than faking sick, looking like a crazy, and loosing the trust of your MD. Just be rational and intelligent about it.

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.
Hmmm crossbow, what is the legal position of those in the UK? I have 2 air rifles but dont consider them a survival tool and I would suspect it would only antagonise people if I carried one around.
Good feedback btw from everyone, lots of stuff I had never considered.
Re Barnes, Yes I am only focusing on disasters that would initiate a government response within say a 3 day period, I am thinking heavy flooding or threat of a dirty bomb, something you would want to leave the area on the expecation you would return soon.
I have a totally different approach for large scale disaster.

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.
On first thought:
Lots of tuna cans
Lots of head and stomach medicine
Small one handed axe
Bayonet/Knife (AK-47 bayonet I got would do it)
Zastava M-76 semi automatic rifle (7.9 mauser) for hunting and self defense (if not enough time to acquire it, would use grandfathers 12 gauge shotgun)
Colt 1911 for self defense (again if not enoug time to get one would use our TT-33)
100 rounds for each gun
Bottle of water
Bottle of rakija (local alcoholic drink good for disinfecting)
Military boots and couple of jackets T-shirts, socks and underwear, and reserve pair of pants
Gas mask
Flashlight
Matches
Couple of old newspaper
Thats about it

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.
Its totally legal to own a crossbow or compound bow in the UK. There are no restrictions other than the ones that apply to all legal weapons ie you can't walk down the high street with it. (It has to be in a case or wraped in a black bag etc) Also if transporting it, it should be in a safe condition with the ammunition seperate. It should not be used <50m from a public road. You can't shoot things in someone elses ground without permission from the estate holder etc
As for things you can shoot legally with a crossbow... targets and trees. You can possibly shoot pests (its a bit of a grey area in the law) Although I shot a rabbit with my crossbow (150lb draw/320fps) and its a bit overkill to say the least, the bolt went through it and stuck into a tree about 20m behind it. (I stick to my airgun now... lol)
They banned "hunting" with crossbows and bow's along with self locking snares and stupid things like machine guns, rockets & explosives and electric shock weapons in 1981 in the wildlife and countryside act.
Im pretty sure the people that made that act were from the fluffy bunny brigade and have likely never been in the countryside - but thats just the way our country is.
On the subject of world disaster and looters and thugs going about raiding houses or whatever im pretty sure a compound crossbow would end someones life fairly easily. You can buy them here already imported from america/switzerland. As for the hunting points you need to get them sent over from america as they only sell target points here. I can maybe post some pictures of mine.

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.
It indeed would. There was a case here in the early-90s when a guy serving in the military took his RK62(basically a westernized AK) together with some rounds and went to hunt some humans. At one point he stepped by his house to pick up some kind of crossbow, and at this point the police were really ****ting their pants because it was said the crossbow would easily punch through their vests.

You all forgot the most important required item on any outdoor, ftx etc, good ole USA Budweiser. Well ok I'm so old an in my days in Guard that was considered appropriate, maybe no so now. Funny story when i was a Pvt in the Guard(11D) an we was on a range at Camp Ripley Mn an I remeber askin for a soda that we always brought to field an so I commence to drink an to my suprprise it was'nt so sweet but was biiter an tasted of beer. I told my plt sgt hey this is'nt soda...it taste like beer. Next thing I know my Sldr(track comm) grabs it from me an slams it. Good ole IA Army National Guard for u 8)-

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.
I reckon it would go through a stab proof vest but I doubt it would go through a ballistic vest. although ive never seen anyone try it. A firearm is superior however if you live in the UK you need a difficult to obtain licence and you can only use it in certain locations and the police comes to your house every so often.

What are your thoughts on hand catapults? they consume considerably less space are lightweight and ammo is always around.

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.
I know some people that are really good with them, I guess you meen the ones that you use ball bearings with. It takes a very long time to get really good at it though. Once trained and with lots of practice it can be very potent weapon and useful hunting tool.
Its smaller than a crossbow or bow but your not going to bring down the same targets as easily.
