A tangent for you all to join me on.

When I moved home I promised myself I would make some "go bags" for me and my family.

For those who are not familiar with the term it describes a bag of goodies that you store in a bag that can be accessed within 60 seconds of an emergency such as a terrorist attack or massive flooding.

As this board has some military / survival minded people my question is, what items would you pop in your go bag?

    Thoughts appreciated.

Let me condense this very quickly.

First aid kid, one of the big ones with sulfa.
    Blankets.
    Space Blankets.
    Sleeping bags.
    Tent.
    Tarp or Groundcloth.
    Ponchos and raingear.
    Good shoes and boots.
    Three changes of clothes.
    Knife.
Entrenchment tool (because it works as an axe and hammer, it negates those.)
GUN, IE one rifle and one pistol. Pistol is for self defense, rifle is for food. DO NOT USE SOMETHING FANCY AND OBSCURE. .308, .30-06, .30-30, or 8mm Mauser.
    Ammunition.
Flare gun with multiple flares of varied color.
    Radio, preferably two way.
    Radio, am/fm
    Cell phone.
    CREDIT CARD AND MONEY

    AND THE LEAST REMEMBERED:
    A FRIGGIN MAP!!!!!

EDIT: I know that I failed to mention food, but I'm assuming that you can realize that you need that to survive. =P

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.

    Interesting feedback,

Cant do guns as I am UK, perhaps someone can suggest a decent item has a survival slant but doubles as a decent weapon in the interim. A knife springs to mind but has limited range options...

The other thing that becomes obvious is the weight of all these objects, my understanding of a "go bag" is it should be light weight and quick deploy, something no bigger than an average laptop bag.

    Currently my bag contains:

    Flashlight (self powered)
    Foil blanket
    Multi tool
    Duct tape
    Food rations for 72 hours
    Water for 72 hours
    Map air and land
    Compass
    antibacterial cream and tablets
ID with address / blood type / next of kin

I guess what I am asking for anyone who does this kind of stuff, is what do you REALLY need in one of these bags to stay alive for 72 hours. Anything more than that requires a different approach.

Also another thought, does anyone know a good UK or Euro side survival outlet they have actually used and received goods from?

Hey from the medical guy, here are a few things i recommend

    water purification tablets
    mole-skin (for foot blisters)
550 cord (you always need it and it works for EVERYTHING)
broad spectrum antibiotics incase you ingest something non-condusive to your health
dermabond (for small cuts. it works on big ones too but only to a certain extent)
make sure your first aid kit has tourniquets, benadryl pills(it works good for rashes)
flare gun is good for if you get lost or need to shot at something/someone
    flint for starting a fire
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make sure that you have extra socks. If you dont take care of your feet you will end your trip EARLY!!

LOL not security forces man, but yeah your right pilots and the rest of the AF have it easy. There are 2 jobs that suck and might as well be in the army, Thats Civil Engineering and Security forces, we are the only ones that deploy for longer then 3 mo lol

Re: A tangent for you all to join me on.

    laptop
    mobile phone
knife tied to a stick (makeshift spear for killing rabbits)
    first aid kit
air rifle (easily can kill small birds)
    food (lots of it)
    compass
    map
    banadages
    sleeping bag
my id (with all my details)
    swiss army knife (toothpicks rock)
    my daily doseage of tea

Also since guns are outlawed in UK ive had to improvise with a makeshift spear
and my air rifle (they can easily kill sheep and pigeons ond other pest animals).
btw when walking i would carry rifle with my sling and untie the knife and
use the stick to support me walking uphill (hiding in the pennines seems a good plan since its only 30 mins walk away and about 20 mins run).
