Re: Large Game Comm Solutions
why are you having to alt-tab out? is it to use it because it wont key up when you are in game? If this is the case the next time you run TS right click and run as adminsitrator that will allow it to be used over ArmA if this is not the case/solution let me know i will help you as much as I can.

Re: Large Game Comm Solutions
Hey all, just catching up on my forum reading...
Like others have mentioned, all the technical details for using TS have already been hashed out.
Breaking up into channels, channel commander, whispering to command/CO, taking over as a new channel commander if the original channel commander dies... it was all commonplace a few months ago. We used to have VON disabled on both Arma 2 servers, so TS was required.
So it really isn't a technical question, it's more a question of will.
I've consistently seen problems with VON with everyone outside of the US with voice quality (I assume due to problems with peer-to-peer networking). As perfect as VON could be, I think I've pretty much decided that it is far too unreliable. I usually type everything when I am CO because VON cannot be trusted to carry the message.
So I hate to say it, but I vote we go back to TS. The system is still there for us to use, and it's reliable.
I'm crying on the inside. VON how you have failed us.
EDIT: btw, keyboard shortcuts can make alt-tabbing out unnecessary, so no alt-tab-crashy-crashy

Re: Large Game Comm Solutions
I agree and disagree. I like having just VON, but I also like just TS. I think it's more of a one or the other thing. The only problem with TS is the fact that it gets crazy, and the direct voice is nice to have.
Just curious, but how does P2P affect VON?

Re: Large Game Comm Solutions
This time it was to start TS because I was taking over as a squadlead and the CO wanted me on TS. The usual reason for alt+tabbing is to organize into proper channels for the mission. Other than that I have no trouble with Arma vs. TS-interaction, both work fine at the same time.

Re: Large Game Comm Solutions
Don't want to go off-topic too much here, but is there a program that works with Win7-64bit like TS Overlay?

Re: Large Game Comm Solutions
I currently use TSDisp, which can be found here: http://tsdisp.sourceforge.net/
Not as good as TS Overlay, but at least it works for me in WinXP (where TSO also has stopped working)

Re: Large Game Comm Solutions
If the server dies. A nuke is dropped on it, and presuming no collateral to anything else, you can still talk to everyone on the server.
VON is P2P (Peer to Peer). Ie, VoIP, Voice over IP. A team speak server is different, as it relays your voice packet to the server, then sends it to all other people (hence the 1-2 second delay).
With VON, you are uploading your voice packet to every single person receiving them, including those around you.
Therefore the more people around you, the worse it will become. Seclude yourself with your fire teams and it will become less choppy. VON over broad channels will become almost impossible to understand; as there is so many more destinations. That is why text is more reliable in this sense.
VON during briefing is a very bad idea (despite its usability) as the game views the direct communication distance (appears with all channels) as the unit were placed, and assuming the regular spacing, that means VON is broadcasting to all members on the server (sometimes you can hear it). Try uploading a 40kb sound file instantly to 40 people. 1600kb in 5 seconds? Nope, won't happen.
Ideally you don't want to be speaking to more than 8 people at once, any more and your connections going to crap out (on average).
So in short, stop VON spam, speak only when needed, and only to those who need it. Seclude yourself from the rest of units where possible if using VON, by about 50-100m until you cannot hear them whatsoever, and that means you will stop unnecessary transmission.
