Re: Some comments from a Newbie
Guys, I think this is a good idea. It would need a little work to come up with a curriculum, so that all the important stuff is covered. I would suggest: mission start (like what roles newbies should pick; everyone unslots and then leaders are chosen, etc.); COMMs (when to use Group, Direct, etc); COMMs etiquette (i.e. - keep quiet mostly; when to talk; suggestion for when to use chat; then what to do in a mission (ROE description; quick ways to find your leader).
I'm sure there are quite a number of things that are necessities. Maybe even publish the curriculum so everyone knows what will be covered. I'd keep it short 15-30 mins and just hit the important stuff.
Good idea.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
A lot of it is already covered, but some of it isn' (like how to identify your FTL). I think the most important thing is to be able to have someone there in a beginner-friendly environment that is able to answer questions for newcomers. Here is my suggestion, and this is only a suggestion...
We can all chip in to put some suggestions in a thread on "things to go over in a 1 hour newbie session". The idea is to end up with a printable document that is an outline of the things that should be covered. Then, on a weekly or so basis, anyone that's confident could volunteer to lead a 1 hour session. That person would have a nice little outline to print out and keep next to them as they take a handful of new people through the basics and make themselves available for questions. That's really all there is to it I would think, or at least a good starting point.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
I was thinking for FTLs and either modding the unit-highlighting diamonds in game, or a custom tag-system, couldn't setVariable be usable to let the mission-maker set a certain person to FTL, and then have the game recognize an FTL by getVariable?
Could a quite nice mod. Hmm...Last edited by Inkompetent; 11-22-2009 at 11:02 PM.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
Hi Guys I'm Xross (pronounced Cross)...
And this is my first post on TG....(woohoo!!)
I find this an interesting discussion as while a veteran A1+ACE player the RW has kept me sidelined so far for A2.
I mention this only because I know there can be anxiety over just joining a different team than you're used to running with so I can see how a new player might just feel 'inadequate' while I'm also sure it was just the guys being 'the guys'. I really doubt they even new there was new player within earshot....at least that's what I prefer to believe.
I applaud you for recognizing this as a delicate area and look forward to joining you all on the TG servers for some A2 very soon.
Xross....out

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
Ok how about this guys. Give me some topics you would like covered in the Newcomers Brief. I will bring it up with the admins and we should be able to work something out. Please keep it serious and no off the wall comments. Remember this is to help the new guys out. Think back to when you where new and the questions you had.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
I think the number 1 issue is "wait, what am I supposed to be doing?" - for very new players it's easy to feel lost the moment the mission starts, so some guidelines as to what to do would be helpful.
I guess the simple answer would be to double-tap escape and follow the guy with the commander symbol. Listen to what he says, and do your best to follow his orders. And never be afraid to ask for clarification if you didn't understand something!
I'm confident everyone in TG is willing to help out new guys, I think maybe some just get too involved in the mission and forget that not everyone has their experience.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
other servers call it a boot camp, they make you go through one before you can join a mission. Introduction to basic stuff like communication, channels, reading notes/tasks on the map while debriefing, answering concerns, adhering to guides/rules of server, etc....
Consideration should be taken on who to run the boot camp.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
It wouldnt really be fair to just now start running a boot camp. Most of the players here didnt go through one and it doesn't seem right to say "no you cant play until you go to boot camp"
This should be and will be voluntary for new members. However attendance will not affect their ability to play on the server.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
Dredge, i don't hold any grudges that boot camp wasn't available when i joined TG, also you can welcome anyone to it just as your training courses. It will be a lot easier on squad leaders when new gamers play online for the first time and it's fun. It should be a requirement just like TS, TG mod pack and not being foreseen as "no you can't play until you go to boot camp".

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
You have to look at it from their prespective though. Say they hear about TG. Go get the game and install it register on the Forums and get all set to play only to realize they cant because they havent had boot camp of which the next class is a week away. I think we will a large group of people because of that. What we CAN do is make it to where say they have X amount of time from the first time they play till they have to attend a quick boot camp. Again though, its a double edged sword of a subject.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
Great discussion guys. Here are the things I would benefit from during a "boot camp."
1. Mission start (like what roles newbies should pick; everyone unslots and then leaders are chosen, etc.)
2. COMMs (when to use Group, Direct, etc)
3. COMMs etiquette (i.e. - keep quiet mostly; when to talk; suggestion for when to use chat
4. What to do when the mission starts (read the mission details; quick ways to find your leader; ROE description)

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
As a newbie, I'd be very interested in a half-hour walk-through of what to expect during the planning phase, how to be useful to the team, and when to speak/not speak. Nothing significant to add to the proposed curriculum, but I would certainly sign-up if the session were to happen.
Having just played my first set of games with TG last night, some observations:
- Clearly defined orders would be very, very helpful. I basically just tried to follow the group, but it wasn't clear to me when I should report contact, when I should engage, or when to shut up and hit the dirt. Having a buddy system for that first game would be great, if only to ensure that the new guy isn't completely screwing things up.
- I had no idea what role to take. Planning was interesting to see, but when the game started I felt like I wasn't part of the action -- instead, I was just chasing green rectangles around, with no idea of what my ROE were or how I could help within the context of the mission as it was described.
- I'm a terrible shot. Enough said.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
Based on current demand I will see what I can do about setting up a TG Newcomers Brief. I will try and answer as many of your questions as I can. I think I might do it on Team Speak that way we dont tie up the servers and when we are done you can jump right into Alpha and start rocking
You might be interested in our Basic Infantry Class then.

Re: Some comments from a Newbie
TG Newcomers Brief = boot camp lol
6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other
whatever you want to call it, it does help, i'm going through it right now in black shark, i had to do some reading and take a quiz :-) but i'm not suggesting you should do the same in ArmAII :-)
