Re: Dr. Tesla: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love to Pwn
I gotta respond to the people that are saying attack/defend/clear gets old...
CHESS.
32 standard pieces. 10^50 possible moves.
We have thousands of combinations of soldiers, weapons, and vehicles... and every speck of terrain is like a fingerprint. A single mission, scripted to randomly deploy two teams over a large terrain with a nice map selection, with TvT in attack/defend intent, could honestly be the entire multiplayer game shipped with Arma 2. Random equipment and vehicles would be like having a cherry on top.
Anyone who thinks they have exhausted all that Arma 2 attack/defend/recon/sweep has to offer, I ask that you think again.Last edited by 1longtime; 12-28-2009 at 07:28 PM. Reason: because chess is boring ;)

Re: Dr. Tesla: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love to Pwn
You just described a TvT of mine, Platoon, that's been on the server for weeks and hasn't been played once. That's how interested people are in the concept
Ok equipment isn't random because of possible balancing issues and the idea of keeping it mostly at infantry level, but the rest can be chosen at will: attacking/defending sides, location, time of day, weather, grass, viewdistance.

Sounds perfect to me, I look forward to playing it. I've played random deployment missions before, and the quick planning it requires is very cool.
It can really work well with all of the new TG maps too. We could randomly explore new pieces of the new map terrain (fields or forests or villages or desert flats) and try them out with different engagements with full squads (and have fun at the same time).

I would LOVE to see a random attack and defend(say 20 random cities) with a script that gives a commander "points" each piece of equipment (ammo crates, APC, Tanks, trucks, aircraft) would cost points and depending on the situation the commander can pick a few pieces of equipment.

Re: Dr. Tesla: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love to Pwn
I hate to be a grumpy old man... but I agree with longtime here. Tesla is a great example of a "borderline" TVT map, at the furthest extent of what could be considered tactical gaming. I think maps like poppy and fallout can be fun... but they are not geared for TG. What I really enjoy about TG is the simulation experience, especially when it comes to implementing a tactical battle plan. Its a form of delayed gratification, the adult way of entertainment. Creative thinking, teamwork and tactics results in a memorable and epic anecdote.
Poppy and Fallout are focused on instant gratification, much like a deathmatch experience. Therein is the main divide and difference between these two types of maps.

But I must point out there are just as many people who want to play those maps as don't this is why we are such a diverse community. What is good for the community is what is fun for the community, we must tread carefully to not push one side or another away from the community

x250 to this.
People need to take the next step and learn to migrate to the other server and play a different style of mission. Yes, you may not have 40 players, but at least you are playing the mission style you enjoy. It is not always about the population, you can *gasp* enjoy ArmA with the lesser numbers. I find it odd that we operate on a fireteam or squad levels during most missions, yet people seem offended to play with just those numbers on the server.
Also, I would like to point out that if both servers are running the same type of mission, ask an admin to see about getting one changed. A diplomatic request is usually all that is needed. We have two servers, lets take advantage and be playing two different styles of play as much as we can.|TG-12th| tHa_KhAn

I want another private server.
I'm not driven to population, but there are times that I simply don't feel like playing with pubbies on Bravo, and as a supporting member I think it's my right to expect to be choosy about that.
I'm not attacking the idea of having Bravo open, I simply want another private server.

And are ONLY intended to be used for SCHEDULED training Ghost. You may want to ask you CO about that one. As for Alpha or Bravo going private, this is yet again the same argument we get to every month here..........All I will say about it right now is that TG servers will be run the best way that we see fit at any given time, and I will leave it right there.
