    Post TS3 Channel Commander Set-Up

Or "How to never ever having to set up whisper lists ever again".
So, with TG having for now abandoned the ACRE plugin and with VON working better than before but still having a lot of limitations, C2 is more important than ever. TS3 has a higher quality and is more reliable than VON, but the developers "wisely" decided to abandon one of the most useful features ever in exchange for having TS3 look sleeker. Obviously the community was not happy with it, so they finally gave us Channel Commander back.
The problem is that Channel Commander is linked to the Whisper List system, so it requires the user to do more than just binding a key to toggle CC on/off.

So here's a quick and dirty procedure to get Channel Commander set up so that you don't have to worry about it every time you start a new game.

First off, we need to set a key to toggle ChanComm on and off. To do so, just go to Settings>Options>Hotkeys; once there, Add a new keybinding and select from the menu Status Change>Toggle>Channel Commander.
There you go, you can now press the key you selected (you did input a key, right?) to toggle Channel Commander on and off.
Alternatively, you can click with the Right Mouse Button on your name in TS and select the Channel Commander option.

Ok, that was the easy part.
Since Channel Commander works with the Whisper Lists, you have to actually set up where you whisper. Luckily there's a new Whisper target that allow you to whisper to every channel commander in the selected channels. While you could specify the channels you want to whisper to, you can also select a general category of channel so as to avoid having to set up a new list every time.

To do so, first select the key you want to use to whisper. Due to how the system works, we'll have to bind a series of command to that one key, or the system simply won't work properly.
For the purposes of the example, I'll use the Right Shift key as my Channel Commander PTT key.

1)Go to Tools>Whisper Lists : this will open the screen where you will set up your Channel Commander
2)click on New and press RShift: this will select RShift as the hotkey
3)click on the drop down menu labelled Whisper To on top and select Groups
4)click on the drop down menu labelled Group Whisper Type and select Channel Commander
5)click on the drop down menu labelled Group Whisper Target and select Parent Channel: this will allow you to whisper from a sub-channel to any CC in the parent channel

    6)repeat step 2 through 4
7)click on the drop down menu labelled Group Whisper Target and select Subchannels: this will make you whisper into any subchannels your channel has

    8)same as 6
9)click on the drop down menu labelled Group Whisper Target and select Current Channel: the way the system works, if you do not set up you will be heard by CCs in the parent channel and in the subchannels, but not the ones in your own channel

    10)same as 6
11)click on the drop down menu labelled Group Whisper Target and select Channel Family: to be honest I don't know if this is required. In theory selecting this should allow you to whisper to your channel, parent channel and subchannels, but in practice it seems it only allows you to be heard by players in all the subchannels.

Now, I haven't used Channel Commander much (twice, to be precise), and I had to pretty much pull this config out of my ghillie hat, so I don't know if it encompasses all possible circumstances. But the two times I had to use it (once in coop, once in TvT) it worked.

    Re: TS3 Channel Commander Set-Up

The ongoing problem with this is that in many repeatable situations individual players are unable to get whisper lists working in any manner with TS3. That and Channel commander does not currently work on TG's TS3 Servers. Overall it is more of a pain in the ass than it was in the past, which is why many of us were looking to ACRE for a slight bit of added immersion, and a suitable means to enhance the gameplay. How TG's returning admin staff chose to interpret that and the lack of understanding of how far the game had progressed from what they had remembered or were used to, and seeing a 3rd party mod being given priority and added to their confusion upon their return definitely didn't help and created some pretty strong hostilities towards the community.

---- edit to clarify: Many users regardless of hardware or software setup, can not use whisper lists properly, controlled attempts in the past with the affected users with channel commander and targeted whispers may or may not work at times. This carried forward with the targeted whispers. Right now in a working setup, TS3 on server B27, with client B26 can work, but from experience elsewhere and here, it is still a very mixed bag for how successful it is working vs, what is expected. These problems have been reported to TS3 etc, but if you also find that your whisper lists are not working properly, file bug reports with the Teamspeak Developers.

    Re: TS3 Channel Commander Set-Up

Yeah, the disadvantage of this so called channel commander is the use of the whisper lists, but I thought the problem was somewhat fixed, seeing that I was one of those players and after a complete reinstallation of one of the latest versions they finally worked for me as well. But I guess it's a moot point, if the TS server currently doesn't support this system.

    Re: TS3 Channel Commander Set-Up

Losing TS2 channel commander has been absolutely crushing.

I understand the hurdles that the admin team was facing (basically, the site-wide server jumping to TS3 with little regard for the Arma community). However, I still wish more thought had been applied to finding a solution. Thinking outside of the box:

    * an interim TS2 server while things sort out
    * a completely different comms solution (I've heard good things about Mumble... and does anyone still use Ventrillo? I have very limited experience in both)

...so basically anything that can provide the functionality we need. This TS3 beta experience has lasted more months than I can remember and it has netted the A2 community here absolutely nothing.

Excuse the negativity, but just speaking honestly.

Despite popular belief, we encourage it longtime. Let me answer some of the points you made.

We had one. However, we had been given a date at which we had to switch over to TS3. The TG higher ups wanted to keep everything and everyone together. It makes it easier on them and us, as far as admin stuff, troubleshooting, etc

We tried several. Mumble is nice, but is a beast to setup server side, and also adds to the already large list of things needed to play at TG.

The admin team is still working to find a solution, trust me on that. And we wont rest until we do. (Or until the Nyquill wears off )

    Re: TS3 Channel Commander Set-Up

My group has transitioned fully to TS3 with channel commander functionality. TG admins, if you'd like to know how we do it, feel free to get in touch via Skype or somesuch and I'd be happy to explain it. The only issue I have seen so far has been the typical TS3 bug where someone might not hear someone else, but that's something you would be experiencing already with TS3 and has nothing to do with the channel commander stuff. I have had no reported instances of people being unable to use channel commander thus far, too.
