You use your regular push to talk button to speak to anyone within earshot without using a radio. The Caps-Lock key is your push-to-talk button for using your radio. Both types of communication are through Acre because it's the Acre that is getting info about where you are on the map which is controlling your positional sound for direct (non-radio).

    Welcome Subvertbeats,

I'm pretty new to the Arma scene too (I've been playing project reality, on the TG server for a while though). I felt the way you probably do right now... "lost". but within a very short time, the Arma folk here, got me up to speed. I don't play anywhere else now. Here's a few links that I find really helpful:

    starting with the basics:
    THE TG PRIMER!
if you really get into the game, the Tactical Gamer University occasionally puts on some really well done instructional classes.
most all basic info can be found here

Some of the following is a repeat of the "Everything you need to know" thread, but I still put it in.
Hitchhiker's Guide To ArmA At TG (New Players Start Here)(although I'm sure you've already gotten this far)
    Zedic's Radio Procedure Guide
Markolh's Guide to Casualties treatment in Arma 2
Close Air Support Manual V 1.0

and last but not least (what I've found most helpful):
    Dslyecxi's ArmA2 Tactics, Techniques, & Procedures Guide

A couple of things to double check. I'm assuming someone in-game already said it, but: Make sure your regular Arma controls for VoiP are unbound when you're using TS. CAPS lock, is my radio key, and my TS push-to-talk key is for direct communication.

Obviously, I gave you a lot of links to read on, I wouldn't expect you to read all of them, but I've found that when the time comes, they're really handy to have in mind. Not crucial mind you, just helpful to make the experience more interesting.

hope to see you in-game soon,
    Shoomfie

    Cheers Unk And Shoomfie

What I was really missing on the radio stuff is why I was being asked to unbind the keys for both comms mechanisms in the main game options. We don'y use the buil in stuff right - everything goes through TS?

id seen most but not all of those links and am a little bit into dslyecxis guide. What a fantastic resource.

Had a great couple of missions early yesterday evening; izumi and scarecrow were very accommodating of my as yet less than stellar skill and were willing to help me learn along the way. Biggest challenges for me at the moment are:

    - learning the radio lingo and SOP
    - just getting familiar enough with the controls to be able to do necessary things BEFORE dying
    - getting my head around the vast range of weapons, ammo, equipment and vehicles

Also, whilst it didnt stop me playing yesterday, when we entered a couple of maps on Bravo I got some errors about a missing file (a vehicle texture file I think) despite SU reporting everything is up to date and complete.

Gotta make this quick, but I thought I'd let ya know about (if you didn't already) the Razer Nostromo gaming keypad...

    http://store.razerzone.com/store/raz...ctID.221675100

Amazing peripheral. COMPLETELY customizable and fits your hand like a glove. I couldn't play ArmA 2 without it, hundreds of keys/macros/switches at my command, makes the daunting key config of ArmA games a breeze, imo.

As ACE updates objects or otherwise changes them we get this effect you describe with older missions that were built with the older objects. Most of the time this doesn't effect the mission as you just have to do without that particular object. You can click "Ok" like you did & may never know the difference.

My Nostromo is my everything! Movement (center keys), firing mode toggle (round click button above the d-pad), stance (d-pad), radio comms/direct speak (key 6 and 15), ace interaction, camera...etc.

I've bound "ctrl" to button 11 (the far left corner button) so I can essentially hit it with my pinkie and that puts a ctrl modifier on all my buttons, effectively doubling the button count. Thank god ArmA recognizes ctrl/alt/shift modifiers for commands.

The nostromo improves my reaction time ten-fold as everything is literally under my fingertips in some fashion. Paired with a programmable mouse like my Cyborg RAT 7, I hardly ever use my keyboard except to chat if I really need to, which is frowned upon anyway.

I'm on my 3rd N52 in like 6 years, had 2 of the orange originals and the mousewheel/button kept failing. I finally purchased the razer and it feels sooooo much better; It's very solid, rubbery "stealth" finish, the button action is quicker and feels more responsive, its illuminated, and the software is a lot easier to use. Razer did some very nice polishing on an already awesome device.

Hey AbortedMan. How long is the USB cable on the Nostromo?

I'd say it around 5-6 feet long, braided cable. I'm not sure why they haven't made a wireless version yet, that'd be awesome. Maybe it'll be next years model.

Welcome aboard Subvert...hope to see you in game soon. Not much more I could add that hasn't been addressed. We like helping the new guys...as you have obviously found out. And...Desire to work in concert with team mates is much more important than individual skill...don't worry bout that at all. ARMA has a steep learning curve and it sounds like you are ramping it up nicely.

    Thanks Grunt

Yep, this game is dangerously immersive and as a result dangerously addictive. Have to remind myself I have responsibilities

On the whole, the experience in game has been wonderful, bar an occurrence of someone getting quite frustrated with me (I took on a medic role, and apparently wasn't healing people fast enough), but I expect a bit of that; just glad most people are accommodating.

Next time tell the wise-guy you're doing the best you can and to cut the crap or Wickens is going to show up, take off his belt and go to town
I don't know if he'll be wearing pants though... so just prepare yourself for that possibility

Glad to have you here, have fun.
Q: How many members of Congress does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None. There is nothing wrong with the light bulb; its conditions are improving every day. Any reports of its lack of incandescence are delusional spin from the liberal media. That light bulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the lighting effort. Why do you hate freedom?!?

Re: New to Arma II and to playing online in general. Am I in the right place??

I've just picked up ARMA II: Combined Ops also and am slowly working my way through it.

The multiplayer is confusing so far, and from what I take... many of the servers that are out there aren't really organized and don't really have an actual game going on and if they do its some off shoot mod. (Flashbacks to FSX MP ATC).

I got ARMA 2 in anticipation of ARMAII:PR and have been a BF2:PR player for a long time so I'm already a big fan of the teamwork aspect. I plan on attending one of their monday night training sessions if they're still going on. Only problem is that all the training sessions are in Euro time. If anyone from TG is willing to hop onto TS and go over the interface, selecting a squad / kit and jumping into play + figure out whats going on in the current mission I'm more than eager to hop on with someone..

    Thanks,

    -Night

Edit: There are a lot of great guides out there on ARMAII regarding tactics and such. Many of them are similair to the guides/material BF2:PR players use but none of them really seem to even gloss over the most daunting part for me, understanding the multiplayer interface/game mechanic.
