AAR 1/29 Zatar Wetlands - PR

Zatar wetlands is all about organization and patience.

Last night I had the privilege of stepping up to command for me MEC forces and had the success of implementing some key fire bases and bunkers in the anticipation of the arriving American forces.

The beginning of the map is the most crucial, for that hour or so before the counter attack begins is all about setup and preparation and getting your squads into position.

Yes the MEC does have the advantage, however...if organized the USMC can be a force to be reckon with.

I was fortunate to have very diligent and patient Squads who setup a tight defensive circle around the incoming USMC with 2 key firebases in the NE AO which were able to thwart incoming LBs and Blackhawk's.

Even coming in as the commander after the initial commander got disconnected, it was very easy to setup a command post, the initial FB, bunker at airfield and then drive over a support truck to Squad 3 led by disposable hero to set up another FB.

More and more on these larger more open maps, communication in a sense is sometimes more important than the smaller maps, for example Mestia.

It is quite funny how everyone wants to fly, wants to be a sniper and wants to gun in an armored vehicle or tank. This map, much like kashan and Al Kufrah is about driving, setting up defensive/offensive positions and being able to coordinate insertions by aircraft.

If it wasn't for squad 1 which was led by ratlover, squad 2 which the SL name slips my mind, Squad 3, which was led by disposable and Squad 6 which was led by Flenly (I will correct the spelling later) we would have not been able to have AA superiority and be able to setup a strong defensive perimeter situated in the Airfield area down to factory and along the NE side of the map all the way to farm that made it impossible for the USMC to penetrate.

The USMC were able to take village, and were able to make Farm Neutral, but that was it as far as inland flags. (LZ1 and 2 were taken and controlled as I expected)

A TOW hummer did break through and cause a bit of ruckus but for the most part, nothing else made it through.

As the minutes counted down towards the Counter Attack, an APC squad led by =JHF= Sector was able to properly destroy a lone apc trying to setup a perimeter at the village, everything was working out.

All in all the MEC side had the upper hand throughout the map, I could have been disconnected and I wouldn't have had to worry, the leadership qualities that the SL's have proved to be essential in the victory for the MEC side.

It was a lot of fun, even though for a period we were hoping to be engaged a bit more even though the USMC team did setup a quick FB in the Southern part of the map, but an entire Tank column along with Squad 6 was able to neutralize the threat and provide armor support for Squad 6 as they recaptured Factory.

Thanks to the squad leaders and members of the MEC side It was fun to be your commander and I hope to do it again and/or be in your squad.

Re: AAR 1/29 Zatar Wetlands - PR

Randy you did a great job as CO.

From my perspective, I felt it would be best to cover Farm and the airspace north of it. This area is so open and is the best area for the US to try to flank the MEC and get behind the front lines. Farm also controls the access to and from the MEC main, so keeping it in control for the MEC is crucial to maintain safe egress for the APCs and support trucks trying to leave the MEC main, as well as our tanks once the counter-attack begins.

We established a FB north of Farm (after an unfortunate incident involving the center-of-gravity of the support truck) and had 3 vodniks providing AA coverage. From this position we engaged and destroyed one or two US apcs and also shot down a couple of choppers.

We left this position to Central Island at that point to help our CO establish a bunker and AA position. After a while had to counter-attack at Farm to keep it from being capped once the US snuck through. We accomplished this with the assistance of one of our APCs.

Our fire base to the north of Farm then went down, so we built another at Farm and established an AA gun with a clear field of fire to any approaching US choppers. We again acquired a H-AT and I also assigned 3 members of my squad to one of the tanks and sent them on a patrol to the north of farm and then to circle back around to central island and then back to farm, then repeat. During this time they engaged a couple of squads and took down a TOW hummvee as well. Shortly after this the US decided they had had enough and we ended the map with a comfortable 200+ ticket advantage for the MEC.
