Operation Archer, Insurgent - "DEVILDAYS", squad 4

    This mini-AAR is way overdue...

Anyway, the main jist of this AAR is about how our 6 man insurgent squad ambushed a couple of USMC convoys on Archer.

The first attack, was a very hasty ambush. We had maybe 10 seconds to spare after getting to our position before the convoy arrived. Still, one well placed RPG shot and some very lucky secondary explosions of the USMC vehicles resulted in some good havoc. Ultimately our squad got overran, but that is to be expected when one squad engages about 3 OpFor squads. Still, it was an expensive encounter for the USMC so we'd done our job.

The second ambush was truly epic. We got setup with about a minute or so to spare and that time made all the difference. Also, we had IEDs in play this time and not just RPGs. Our squad ended up destroying 2 support trucks and a Hummvee, all fully loaded without taking any casualties. There was some serious Insurgent high-fiving going on after that.

The first two vehicles were a hummvee and a support truck. Disco's IED caught both of those vehicles. The third vehicle, another support truck, was well behind the first two and he tried to make a run through our ambush, driving past the other two wrecks. Belhade's IED caught him...I suspect they thought that they might have been about to get away since the IED was much further along. Anyway, good thing that Belhade tagged them, as it would have been a tough RPG shot to catch that third vehicle.

After the trap was sprung, I told the squad to expedite north asap to the airfield, where the USMC had a base setup. They were spawning in as we arrived and started engaging right away. In a true moment of DOH!!!, Blonov found himself surrounded by OpFor as they piled over the wall next to him. I counted 9 bad guys around him when he popped his molotov...which I think only managed to kill him. Too funny

At that point we made it our goal to take out their base, and so just kept the pressure on until we had it down. It was a fun round!

Most of the ambush success has to be credited to |TGXV| DiscoJedi who was an absolute rockstar the whole round. The ambushes were really his inspiration.

    Anyway, check out the video...

Excellent video AAR. I like the scene where you caught the Humvee and Supply truck and then the the second supply truck with the secondary IED. I am glad I waited 30 minutes for the vid to download.

If you want a "feel good" moment out of that vid Cougar, than just watch the segement where Blonov is surrounded by 9 guys and pops a molotov on them, suicide fashion...all the USMC run out of the flames and Blonov, well, he becomes Blonup

On a more serious note...and to stop poking fun at my Devilish bretheren...I think the convoy tactic is very potent but I think what I learned after watching the vid and writing the AAR is that the requisite security is a must when travelling with that much asset.

It occurred to me that a flyby from one of the helos along the intended route would give a real good early warning about an impending ambush. It would have got the first one for sure, and most likely our man with the RPG on the second ambush would have been spotted. It's very hard to stay hidden from the air.

TBH, in a convoy like that, once the first humvee went down, they should have kept on driving. Stopping to engage only AIDED the insurgents in their cause of disruption...

Very true in the first engagement...but in the second ambush, which was layered, driving through get's everyone killed.

That was a first attempt for many members that day.

Spacing was off and the dealing with contacts was not properly discussed.

Front security was weak in the first clip.

Had he drove through the convoy would have made it. At least the co truck and second hmv would have.

It seems that on Archer you only really have time for one large movement and it most be completed at the start of the round with out waiting.
