Games Tonight (8-23) CO Perspective
Tonight I commanded 3 full games of Oman, DaqueOilfields and Zatar Wetlands.
Oman Honestly I don't remember this map to much. I was the CO of the MEC. Basic strategy was to take the western side and deprive the US of artillery. Fierce firefights amongst the middle bases, construction, hotel and that eastern one for the entire game. Meanwhile I had capped and kept the beach for a good portion of the game. Once the game stabalized The US only had the hotel and then one of the middle ones was constantly switched. The lack of US artillery killed them here, since they were bunched in one area I was able to pound them with artillery and keep them back allowing my squads to regroup and keep certain objectives clean. The US managed a break out attack several times but lack of artillery and spreading themselves to thin generally ending up in huge casualities on their side. Daque I have commanded this many times and am very comfortable with the strategy. I go with a periphery hold. There are a few key positions that must be kept, the middle is not one of them. I beleive Bommando style is more of ignore the middle. I prefer to take the middle but not lose men holding it. Within the first 5 minutes I have my 3 core flags, from there I was able to expand my force to where it needed to be, once I gained enough for bleed and assets I told my men to dig in. The commander kept having men respawn in the middle to hit my close assets, a mistake that many make. I reserved my arty for when I would see the massive spawn gearing up and would drop it, decimating the troops. Later the opposing CO stopped doing this tactic and started hitting the west and took the CPs there, by this time I had a comfortable lead and did not push as quick as I could have. A slow drawing of strength and constant bombardment occured over the next 10 minutes until we pushed them out of the west. Locking my squads down in their points until the points reached 0. 0-288 I believe was the total. Zatar Again I started off with the periphery strike with a lockdown in the west. I told my men to ignore the middle, its a firepit. One SL reminded me I needed to take one more point for bleed, so I sent him off to take the eastern base , meanwhile most everyone else dug in and defended while I dropped artillery on the middle, causing massive causulties, Once locked down and appropriate bridges blown and massive bleed started occuring the OCO begin to hit my eastern base retaking it. I sent a squad in to take the lightly defended middle base (My biggest mistake of the evening). An enemy squad popped up right before we could get to the middle flag holding off the attacking squad, meanwhile enemy troops were taking my undefended flags. What followed was a mad rush to defend our current positions. I apologized to the squads for my greediness and pulled back all the attacking squads, even though in 45 seconds the eastern CP would have been mine again, I knew I need the men to secure my backside. What followed was an intense 15 minutes of take and hold. Fortunantly the bulk of the enemy troops were attacking heavily fortified positions buying me precious time to retake those points. Finally the defensive wall was put back up and the game ended. 0 - 298. I would just like to say a GREAT job by all my squads, I know a few were getting antsy about sitting on defense for so long with no action, but I am a defensive CO The opposing team did a great job of breakout but they never seemed to be able to hold it. I still can't command Air worth a damn, but I am working on it. Az |

Re: Games Tonight (8-23) CO Perspective
air assets move too fast to be commanded. They are better used as artillery substitute/complement. This mostly applies to jets. But AH can be used in the same fashion, except that they are most effective in patrolling a route (where the armor are exposed and in the open).
Let the Jets hang on their own. Usually they are engaged in alot of dogfight and dont have time to do the runs. So assgin them as home base and let them drop ordinance before RTB.

Good job Az - I was the USMC CO for the last 250 or so points on Oman and tried to get back some kind of foothold but it was no use. (BTW Death advice taken about commanding Air squads - I think I was a bit too micro with you on that map, but a lot of people were requesting air support).
And great job on Oilfields and Wetlands Az. My squad wasn't getting antsy, I was just offering up a fire team from our relatively quiet back position. I play defense 80% of the time, so we were fine holding down the fort. Holding that eastern base on Wetlands was really hectic though - they kept pouring in armor from their far eastern base, but we held on for quite a while. Always good playing under you as CO Az. I know my squad had a good time... And thanks for the AAR. Good stuff.

You guys are beginning to see it. I am convinced that Commanders can't command an air squad. It's not possible with the time and info they have. For that argument, I suggest you read my debrief from the AGE scrim: http://www.tacticalgamer.com/showpos...01&postcount=9 The relevant part here is "Argument for SL-requested air strikes" However, leaving them to their own ability to find and prioritize targets is also not the best thing to do. The jets have little information about who is most in need. SLs need to call in air strikes directly, a technique which worked wonders in combat tonight with the 1st MIP on server 2 on Oman. This is not limited to VMFA-531. All pilots can do this, and should try it out. http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlefield-2-general-discussion/58463-sls-pilots-get-set-up-call-air-strikes.html
