Shaqari 23:30, 9/22
Well, after my game kept crashing to the desk top for a few minutes, I was able to finally get my game to stay online without crashing. I jumped halfway into the Mashtuur battle as USMC. My squad was charged with the defense of the Mosque/Garage area and the flags changed hands a few times. I didn't get to see much action, seeing as I joined later in the game and kept crashing. My short time on, though, was fun.
Next map: Shaqari. I wasn't really looking forward to this map, since the last time I had played it, it was not fun at all. I kept on dying left and right and my team mates just couldn't stay alive. It didn't help that in that map, USMC (which I was on) didn't have a CO to issue commands. So naturally, when I played this map last night, I was cautious. I joined up with a squad, I can't remember what the name was, but it was Squad 3, a full squad and we communicated pretty well. About 2 minutes into the game, I noticed that, again, we did not have a CO. I pointed this out and no one wanted to take the reigns and so I, not wanting to have another bad experience on Shaqari, gave myself a on-the-site battle commission and promoted myself. In the initial opening, the USMC had positioned itself in the middle and rear areas. There was no one at all on the far west flag; MEC forces quickly overran the front positions and proceeded to attack in a pincer formation, approaching from the north flag and south flag while units held the center hill, just west of the construction site. This was when I gave myself a promotion and became CO. I noticed that I had three fully loaded squads of 6, a chopper squad, one medium sized squad, and two or three 2 man teams. Seeing as this was my first time commanding a full army on a full 64 player map, it was daunting at first. I've commanded before, but on ranked servers and as we all know, the game play dynamics are completely different between TG and ranked servers. But I digress; MEC forces were quickly overrunning USMC positions left and right and we had been pushed back to the TV station/hill areas. This was one of the few times that USMC was pushed to only one flag. I quickly threw UAV up where enemy troop concentrations were the greatest to shine some light for the team and then ordered one of the full squads to retake the northern flag and another fully loaded squad to retake the southern flag, each supported by a smaller squad. The others were held in reserve and to hold the center position, just before the TV station, to defend against continual MEC encroachment. After a few minutes, the squads informed me that they were having great difficulty taking the flags and holding. I wasn't too alarmed, even though my guys were being killed rapidly. We were down by only 50 or so tickets. I decided to pull the squads back to reposition and rethink a plan of attack. Having withdrawn, MEC units decided to pursue USMC forces and corner us on the TV station. Fortunately, in the ensuing melee, a lone wolfer was able to capture the far west flag. If I could remember that soldier's name, I'd give him a medal. With the far west flag captured, two or so USMC squads respawned there and moved eastward. With their rear open, MEC forces were split up: half pushing forward, half pushing back. In the ensuing minutes, MEC determination trumped the USMC's defense of the TV station and it fell, along with me (I was inside the tower commander and some putain shot me!). I relocated my HQ to the southern flag, which was just recently captured, and took position in the building overlooking the flag. One of the squads by the far west flag informed me of continual hostile armor harassment; I radioed in the chopper squad to eliminate the threat. I quickly ordered several squads to retake the northern flag and the central flag, just west of the construction site. All goes well and the flags are taken, but MEC forces stormed the southern flag and again, in I'm steam rolled over by lead. Fortunately, Squad 3 took the initiative during my semi decent into Hades and regained control of the TV station and repaired my lost assets. I relocated HQ; now USMC was holding the west flag, the north flag, and the TV station. If we could just retake the flag west of the construction site, we could bottle up MEC forces in a kill zone. But with tickets nearing 100, I ordered all squads to defend their respective flags and take up position on advantageous terrain. If we could just hold out, we could win. By now, USMC luck was up. Prior, we were down by at least 40-50 points for a long stretch of time. Now we had gained the upper hand and had a 30-40 point lead on the MEC team. After the lines had stabilized, I ordered a full squad along with a half squad from the TV station area to attack the south flag. After several attempts, they retook the flag. I look at the score: it gets nearer and nearer to zero and there's about three minutes left on the clock. The score reads 23-17. Somehow, the MEC had been able to close up the gap. I ordered all USMC forces to dig in and defend. Huzah, MEC tickets drain slowly and USMC just barely wins with a 11-0 ticket count. One of my memorable moments was on one of my artillery strikes, it had taken out at least 8 guys at least. I just yellow text scrolling all over the place. ![]() If anyone has any comments or criticism, I'd much appreciate them to better myself. And I'd like to commend the USMC team for their valiant victory from the jaws of defeat and congradulate the MEC team on a great game. |

Re: Shaqari 23:30, 9/22
I was the SL who was complaining about armor all the time, and I think we were squad 4. Felt like the tank was following us around everywhere.
My observations: MEC managed to pin us into the TV station really effectively at the beginning. Instead of defending their flags, or attacking ours, they were defending the exits from our flag which worked very well for a while... until someone capped that western flag. At that point we steamrolled through and recapped most of our flags. So the 'front line' plan can work very well on some maps, it seems, as long as you are able to adapt quickly when then enemy breaks through. The western flag was constantly under attack from armor. Even if we had the US tv station the tank that spawns there is really too far away to help. If the MEC is making effective use of their armor spawns the USMC chopper needs to patrol that area heavily. I'm amazed we managed to hold that western flag so well, and it really is a credit to the guys in the squad. It was a hard fight the whole game and I didn't really coordinate any defense; I probably shouldn't have been a SL that round. Oh well, at least it wasn't boring. |
