Karkand - the Ascent - 10/27/2005

Karkand - The Ascent - 10/27/2005

You can look for thread http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlefield-2-after-action-reports/61390-aar-10-19-karkand-descent.html on the Descent.

Last night the map switched to Karkand and I was hoping someone would hop out of Beatnik's squad so I could hop in, I waited a few minutes so no luck. That is when I realized we had no CO. Realizing the bad time I had before and that I needed to show the map who was boss I jumped into the CO chair. At that point in time we were maybe 5 minutes into the game most everyone was pushing the hotel. I basicaly rerouted everyone around the hotel and other middle flag and sent them to the Train Accident and Suburbs.

A few minutes later I had the train accident, was pushing a bit on the east side, we were ahead in points by about 40, I had one squad putting pressure on the factory but from what I could tell they didn't have the manpower to take it. At this point I had a choice, I could take the west side and setup along the river which is normal operating procedure. Or...I could implement the Plan. I pulled a squad off the train wreck, I pulled a squad off of suburbs and I pulled my armored squad to the landbridge, leaving basicaly the west side except the train accident to the enemy.

It was squad 3 that gave me my chuckle for the night, I think it was Beatnik's squad, I might be mistaken. After giving the order to leave the suburbs undefended Beatnik made the tactical error of hitting V instead of B. In my ear I heard something to the effect of this "Yeah I don't know why we are moving out, it doesn't make sense but Azreal knows what he is doing", I replied "I think you hit the wrong button"...a moment of silence. "Well its a good thing I didn't say anything to bad" I laughed and squad 3 moved out with some trepidation.

The situation, squad 4 had been unable to move across the river due to a squad on the landbridge, a squad up north. Plus some squads on the west side. I had pulled all my troops along the river. At this point I realized that the plan was about to be set, I knew the 1 squad by itself could never push across the river, but 3 squads supported by armor...I hoped. The opposing CO could have made some calls to head me off, but either he wanted the west side or didn't see my deployment in time. I saw the troops headed to the suburbs, and again squad 3 asked if they should go back. Again I told them to wait a bit longer. 30 seconds later I gave the order to cross. I don't think the opposing squads knew what hit them.

My squads quickly took the cement factory. A northern squad pushed north and fought over the gatehouse. Squad 2 (which did a damn fine job) stayed back and harassed the enemy from the arty. For the next 15 minutes evolved into a bloodbath in the east. Our tickets plummetted from a 30 ticket lead to a 20 ticket deficient. By the time the enemy had rerouted their forces to the east we already had the momentum, soon the factory was in our hands and the battle for the warehouse occurred over the next 10 or so minutes. This is where we started to rebuild our lead, the enemy CO was blind and had no assets. My arty pummeled him and squad 2 was sending men to wherever they were not. The warehouse became a death trap and we finally took the warehouse. A few UAVs later and the west was clear and we had the eastern side, squad two was near our arty holding back the tide and the enemy was trying to make a line across the river, unfortunatly a mixture of we had arty, uavs, and squad 2 at there back door never gave them respite. The line faltered and they pulled back to protect to the inner city. We moved in and pushed the train accident taking it.

About this time the opposing team had roughly 60 tickets and we had something like 200. Beatnik asked if he could do an all out assault at 40 tickets, I thought it was splendid idea and moved everyone from defensive to assault positions. Then boom I hit the hotel/suburbs with a hammer of arty and troops. It fell and the opposing forces scattered trying to get a flag. They had none we had them all. They retook the train accident and I believe that is when the game ended.

All in all a good game. My plan worked well, even when we were down to 1 non ucb flag and down 20 tickets we still managed to pull it up. It was not the normal river standoff and every squad under my command did a wonderful job. It was calculated from the moment I told squad 3 to move out. I knew the cost would be high but I also knew if I moved quick I could secure what I needed and deprive the enemy CO of assets and position while I kept my assets and all the armor. I think it should make Karkand interesting the next time I CO.

That was a good game. I was on the MEC side in James squad (good job by the way, we held the hotel most of the game), we didn't have a commander for probably the first 10 minutes or so of the game. Santa stepped up and was doing a great job but he CTD to the desktop about halfway through. Sassy stepped up but I think it was already too late. The few minutes without the commander really hurt us. Sassy made a neat move at the end to take the East back but we ran out of tickets on the way. Ill let here tell you about that...

I was MEC for that may, in Deveran's 1337 squad. I was in the fight for the warehouse for a while... that place was a meat grinder. All of the gunfire and explosions in that building -- it sounded like New Years in Tijuana!

It was the lack of armor that eventually did us in.

You did a great job, Az. I too was on the MEC and you threw us off by some of those moves. I agree with Dr. Lily that the warehouse battle was incredibly intense. I was in Jaymind's squad and he did an excellent job of leading us to hold it for as long as we did, but you simply overpowered us in the end. Sassy was in our squad too until we realized we had no CO. She willingly and immediately jumped into the position and did a fine job taking it over....but I too think the momentum had swung too much against us by that point.

It was a great round over all even though we go whupped in the end.

Karkland got a little bit away from me at the beginning. I think we were spread to thin at the beginning cover the whole east side of the river when they rushed a couple APC's plus infantry across.

Overall, my squad did really well considering the circumstances we ran into.

If you thought Beatnik's comments were funny... you should have been listening to Bommando the whole time. LOL

(whistles) Um, yeah that was me. I've got to re-bind my keys or something. That V and B are just too close together, especially when you're trying to drive and talk to CO AND squad members that are about to mutiny.

Picture a southern accent: "Gentlemen, we're going to take the east. I need squad 3 to move from the Suburb to the river now."

Now picture a thick Aussie accent: "Is our CO mad? Who's the CO? Does he realize that we're leaving the Suburbs WIDE open?? What's he thinking??"

If I told you what I heard after we lost the suburb about a minute later, I'd have to ban myself from these forums.

I'll admit I wasn't sure that the timing was right to charge across the river... but after being down at least 20 points when we began our assault, then down 40 when we capped the MEC main, we were able to completely manage their assets (thanks Killrogg for that relatively boring assignment) and keep our guys out of arty the last 3/4 of the game. And arty of course makes all the difference in a tight map with no bleed. It was a risk, but I'm glad we took it.

It was also cool to see The Sassy Maneuver (pulling your whole team back from the trainwreck at once, baiting the other team to take it and enter a giant killzone) from the opposing team's perspective. When I saw that, I knew Sassy had stepped up as CO. And hearing Azreal say "No one charge the trainwreck - it's a trap!", and then "Ok charge in and take the flag, then everyone fall back!" was very cool too.
