Mashtuur City, Dec 14th ~8PM PST -- "It's raining men..."

Great game on Mashtuur on Server 1 tonight. I'd like to thank my squad, #1 USMC (YerMom, bigGaayAl, Mergovingi, hastuuri?? and a few others who popped in a over the course of the map).

At the beginning of the round, I decided to spawn on the South Gas Station to set up a defensive perimiter on the blackhawk spawn. Past experience has shown that if this falls, The USMC will most likely loose the map. We had no commander yet and I figured if hopefully a good squad takes up the blackhawk and we can keep if in our hands, we would have enough of an edge to win. The side benefit was that if the Hill fell, at least we could keep the UAV up if we got a commander.

The round started off slow enough. My squad members followed orders really well as we set up a defensive ring aroung the Gas Station and waited. One in the HMMV, several infantry positioned to warn of incoming attack from any direction.

We didn't have to wait long. After holding off a couple of pretty heavy assaults by at least a full squad pushing up from the Hill, which had fallen, we were feeling pretty good about our defenses. At this point we got a commander, and although the rest of the assets were down, I had suicided and at least got the UAV repaired as an engineer. As I got up from repairing the UAV, somebody hit the tarmac in front of the Gas station by parachute... huh?, My squad started sounding off about contact, so I jumped in the HMMV that spawns under the Gas Station and manned the .50.

What happened next over the following 15 minutes was one of the best firefights I've had in BF2. We were spread out but all had a good firing line on the flag. Effectively shutting it down. With added C4 from Al, the flag area was a killing zone of some lethality.

Wave after wave of paratroopers landed at and around the gas station. This was brilliantly executed the first time because you were amongst us in numbers in a very short time and the effect was very disorienting. Again, thanks to my squad for doing an amazing job of keeping cool under fire and keeping all incoming attackers under pretty much constant fire. As the airborne assault continued, we got out our orientation back and we manuvered into positions in the AA and around the flag with HMMVs and infantry.

The number of paracutes started prompting hillarious references to the Mine video. It literally was. At one point, The blackhawk crew got involved and we had two units dropping out of the sky together. This was made more funny by the static nature of our defense (we kept in the same area the whole round, so we watched the whole affair end to end.)

I have two comments for the (obviously excellent) squad who perpetrated this.

One, you should practice your HALO jumps, If you can do this with better coordination and hit the ground together, you'd be very difficult to stop. As it was, you were opening to high and we were able to get a lot of you on the way down.

Two, surprise is the key, I'll admit the C4 and grenades as the assault mounted were a nice touch, and got a few of us, but after the first time, we were ready for you. Point one above and using the AA as an early warning device gave us a pretty good shooting gallery.

Eventually, it must have proved too much and the air assault let up. Things got even worse then, with commited infantry assaults, Vodniks and Arty (even a tank at one point) for the rest of the match, but the battle had been defined at that point and the rest is a blur. We held the line. We didn't loose the flag once, and although the BH got swiped a couple of time, it was always taken back pretty quickly. We had a 40 ticket advantage at that point, and time was ticking away. My squad performed brilliantly and really followed movement orders well as I analysed the tactical situation on the minimap. I spend a lot of that game watching little red dots move and hitting the B button, and it was undoubtedy the most fun I have had SLing.

Thanks for the great game. It was funny, tactically stimulating and well played. Static defense was really great fun on this map.

USMC won with a 40 ticket at time.

Thanks Mantis, The MEC squad doing the paradropping was Alpha (I think), who got best MEC. The best USMC squad was in the blackhawk. Great game...

Hated that round, BH whoreing was going on all night, using it as a gunship is just sad, felt more like a pub server than TG. Spawn, die by bh, spawn, die by bh with <40 players on 64 map this went on for to long and got old really quick.

Even 2 vodniks + AT rounds hitting the BH didn't blow it up once! This had nothing compaired to Tuesday nights Mashtuur round.

Glad you had fun though.

I had lots of fun on the MEC side, was sorry that I had to leave eventually. I got on the server and found no open squads but nex911's Sniper squad. I've never had any use for the kit but I decided to finally give it a try. I had a blast. We played a pretty long game of hide and seek with Santa, Dark Viper, and Mantis that usually ended up with me yelling over voip "Holy ****! Where are they?! I did get Santa a few times though, and I made sure to taunt him over the general chat.

Then the commander started moving us around the map, and I actually started getting kills with some regularity, we even got a few guys out of the BH.

So, in the end, maybe Jusb isn't entirely insane for loving that kit.

The BH whoring at the end was annoying. They were not even trying to cap flags. You have 5-6 people in that thing use the mobility and cap a spawn point. Especially if you are bleeding.

I had to play alone for most of the map, as there was a locked sniper squad and 3 full squads on. So I was asked to harass the enemy/blow up assets. Good fun trying to get around your defence at the Gas station to blow that Supply spawn up. The USMC did an excellent job defending that position.

Re: Mashtuur City, Dec 14th ~8PM PST -- "It's raining men..."

"Alpha" was indeed the MEC Paratrooper squad, and we evidently got best squad on our team despite the SL having a total score of 7.

In the beginning of the round, we did quite a lot of paratrooping over the South Gas Station flag, despite getting cut down there. But the madness had method in it, because keeping one or two full enemy squads at the South Gas Station allowed the MEC to dominate elsewhere on the map and retain ticket bleed.

When flags started falling elsewhere on the map, I steered the rusty ol' ROFLchopper to whichever flag needed assistance. While the Blackhawk was squeezing every point possible from its miniguns, the MEC transport chopper was, incredibly enough, engaged in transport. We hit every single flag on the map at least once.

The endeavor was pretty successful, as MEC held ticket bleed for the great majority of the map, and this is rare on Mashtuur. We lost the game by only 40 tickets. (The blackhawk scored over 100 kills.)

We tried to refine the tactic a bit over the course of the round. I managed to keep the chopper steady enough to avoid getting a single penalty for team damage during all of the paradrops. We also started using more coordination, waiting for the chopper to fill up and then release at once, like gunjunkie suggested in the original post. Apparently chopstix also mastered the art of dropping C4 while parachuting down.

I have to agree with preston on the pubbie feel on mashtuur last night. WHen I wasnt losing connection I was getting sniped or sawed in half by the BH. I think at one point there were 8 or so snipers on MEC alone. Dont look at this as sniper hating, but this is the second night (Mashtuur a couple of nights ago)Ive played where its just become a sniper fest. Maybe its the M95 being available. Maybe my squad was just caught in the middle of the sniper battle.

Re: Mashtuur City, Dec 14th ~8PM PST -- "It's raining men..."

Yeah, I had to kick two players out of my squad at various times over the course of the map for simply being completely unresponsive to orders and running off on their own. During one particularly intense moment, somebody joined my squad, jumped in my HMMV, and started tearing towards the hill, ignoring all my asking him what the hell he was doing. We were lucky we were able to hang on because our big gun had been put out of action by this errant squaddie.

Unfortunate that the BH squad ruined it for others. I will say that I've been asked to use the BH as a gun platform on more than one occasion by the CO. Roll on the nerf. Maybe if they get the patch right, we will see the BH being used more like a pure transport. I would like to see both transport choppers having some anti-ground capability, as they should be big threats, but not to the point where it is now. The ROFLcopter should maybe be bumped for balance, either better guns or better survivability. In fact, if the BH remained a dangerous, but fragile, gun platform, but the ROFLcopter was made much tougher, and capable of landing a squad under heavy fire. This would be a great, but difficult to balance contrast, that would promote some interesting tactical choices.

Re: Mashtuur City, Dec 14th ~8PM PST -- "It's raining men..."

Yeah, on a positive note I had quite a good squad, we took whatever flag we assaulted and defended well.

I don't have a problem with the guns on the BH as such, its the way they were just circling killing us on spawn with no effort to take the flag... The guns should give the transport some cover to enable it to transport troops but I agree all it needs is weaker armour + unable to fix it from inside. I heard people saying they hit the BH with tank rounds + vodniks and it still wouldn't go down. My squad had 2 vodniks + me hitting with AT rounds and the BH still was able to circle with relative immunity.

Squad 1, did you notace how even though we had bleed for a long time we never got a lead??? You provided them with to many tickets from constantly dropping men onto that flag when it was too well defended.

We should of came and helped you, if we lost a flag cos if it but captured that BH spawning flag it would of solved the problem, sadly the BH had been winding me up for hours so I didn't think to come take that flag. Ah well i've learnt from it, should of done something about the BH instead of just complaining about it.

Re: Mashtuur City, Dec 14th ~8PM PST -- "It's raining men..."

It really was one of the best fights i've played in bf2.
Gunjunkie did a great job at positioning our squad. We were in a wide circle around the flag, so we could easily spot incoming opfor from all sides. When it kept raining men on the gasstation, this formation made them fall right into the killzone.

I have to applaud the opposing squads determination, the really put up an awesome fight. But as gunjunkie said, it's very important to use halo jumps. I would also suggest that if you keep attacking a flag by parachuting in, it may be better to jump to the side of the flag and fight your way in. Since we were spread out with large gaps between the squadmembers, a team that uses multiple medics could infiltrate this defense, and keep enough members alive to cap the flag regardless of the few defenders still alive.

Gg that was!

Yeah, my squad did express a concern about this. While we were attacking the south gas station against a large defense force, our team actually was gaining on them in tickets and eventually built up a lead. But after awhile, I realized that they would likely be keeping that defense force at the gas station even if I slowed the waves a bit, so I had people start to stay longer in the chopper before bailing out, to conserve tickets.

After the enemy began taking other flags across the map, I started sending the chopper against their undefended and weak control points. We kept up bleed, but ironically it was at this point--not when we were attacking their best defense--that we started losing the lead. This is because they started racking up the kills with the blackhawk and performing better against our other infantry squads. Bleed only costs the enemy six tickets per minute, and they made up for this in kills.
