TotalBF2 Map Pack 3 Pub Raid

Valhalla was darn near impossible to get a foothold on as USMC. Those poor little boats were defenseless against all the cars firing their 50's. Once we did get on land, holding a flag against the onslaught of defenders was tough as well. We managed but took lots of casualties. A well disciplined OpFor team would keep the USMC on the ship the entire game. We saw TONS of bunny hopping on this map! Not one to try on TG's server.

Alcatraz was pretty cool. Really well done, I thought. I like that the CO assets have been removed and no vehicles.. pure infantry fighting. Again, a well organized OpFor team could probably pounce the USMC. We could try it, but may have to remove it if the USMC get slaughtered a bunch. Might be something to try on the tactical mod.

A.T.O.M. is nice as well. Probably my favorite of the pack so far. This would be good to try.

Bocage seems too small. Would like it better if things were more spread apart. Probably not one to try.

Power Failure felt like it had a very strong bias towards the OpFor team. If that compound were larger then maybe it wouldn't feel quite as bad. Probably not one to try.

Did not get to try Yellow Dragon.

We did miss the VOIP on the server

So will the powers that be indulge our tastes for new maps? Pretty please?

Re: TotalBF2 Map Pack 3 Pub Raid

I did like A.T.O.M and from the screen shots, yellow dragon looks good.

Alcatraz was too linear and Valhalla was in favor of the OpFor with no way to get on the shore

Just ran around it in single player... You thought Alcatraz was linear.. well, this one is pretty much a straight line! The USMC start at the north, then a slightly wooded area to to their south before a road that runs east-west. Along that straight road are 3 initially neutral flags.. Continue due south and there are 2 cappable OpFor bases.

damn...so the only promise is ATOM...i think alcatraz would work with SF because you would be able to climb those cliffs instead going in circles

Re: TotalBF2 Map Pack 3 Pub Raid

No voip? That sucks.

Maybe we could resurrect a SM Monday Night and have a few of these maps to play the proper, TG way. AND with voip.

I'm grabbing these right now and depending on d/l time (Dallas capped at 120k so I'm trying Chicago) I'll be on the Pub Raid channel in an hour or so.

I'll post my reactions here later. Don't know how patient I can be with no voip though. Is it really that difficult to put some maps you want to promote on a server with voip??

http://www.x-07.de/oyd.htm - there are some screenshots of Yellow Dragon.. it looks pretty but has a poor layout.

Teamspeak is ok when people don't get sassy with you as you try to communicate with your squadmates Can't hold anything against them for the VOIP problems.. we've had our own

Re: TotalBF2 Map Pack 3 Pub Raid

Ah ok I thought they put it on a voip-less server. I really don't like to use TS if I don't have to, but it's better than nothing.

I'm currently adding support for Abu Dhabi and Hormuz (heavily tweaked) from map pack #2, then I'll check out map pack #3 and add support for the best ones in that bunch.

Actually that's one of the dumbest things about SF, you cannot use grappling hooks on something that is not perfectly vertical and the BF2 engine cannot make terrain 100% vertical. that means you have to create the cliffs in a 3D program and do an amazing texture job on them in order for the cliff objects to not stand out from the normal terrain (which isn't really possible anyway because of how BF2 handles terrain vs objects for lighting).

I know because my first map test was a SF map and it was designed around that, climbing cliffs with hooks. It only worked if I put a rock or a log at the top of the cliff that was long enough so the rope wouldn't touch the cliff when thrown on that. Not only did it look kind of silly but it made it so the climbing spots were pre-set and you knew exactly where the enemy would be climbing from.

Re: TotalBF2 Map Pack 3 Pub Raid

I posted pretty much my same first message on TotalBF2 in their thread about the map pack.. This is how someone replied to my Valhalla report:

Quote:
I have played it now on public servers maybe 50 times - never was there any trouble getting on land. You must have had some really poor team.
Bhack, Drunk, others... did we have troubles getting on land? Would 16 TG players on the OpFor be able to keep the USMC bottled up on the ship for the entire round?

Have the entire team use AT rockets, and vodniks and theres no way anyone makes it on land. The carrier is also close enough so people could be sniped on land and the essex gun cant be really useful as it can be hit by at rockets with ease

Every single time I enter into a thread on that forum I get the most ridiculous and asinine comments. Some guy claimed he had found richochet existed in the game by getting in the minigun on a parked blackhawk on the carrier, he shot the minigun straight down at the deck and died. He then attributed this to the bullets richocheting back into him and killing him. I pointed out it was more likely the fact that the splash damage from the explosive damage type of the minigun is what killed him. He called me an idiot and told me to "stop talking out of my colon."

Yeah and I'm sure that guy has played the map 50 times, already. I can't believe they even included this map in the release, I thought these map packs were semi-professional. The design isn't even close to fair. I'll admit, for public players - some of those guys on the opfor were pretty good. It almost seemed as if there was at least one cohesive squad on their team. That being said, even an unorganized team shouldn't have much problem defending the coast, as you pointed out.

When we finally did get ashore, I noticed some of the opfor guys in particular were quite good FPS players. I also noticed how ridiculous bunny hopping and dolphin diving is, and how it does give quite a distinct advantage in certain situations. I was having a hard time hitting them at first, until I adjusted my tactics a bit.

One of the guys in particular, was extremely good at jumping and launching grenades from the F2000. After we got a medic in our TG squad though, I went on a rampage, nailing that bunnyhopping grenade launching ass with his own weapon, minus the hopping. I know we ended with best squad and I think we all had the top spots on our team.

I know it was causing some frame rate issues, but I sort of liked fighting in the 'woods'. There are no stock maps like that and the trees give all sorts of cover opportunities.

Re: TotalBF2 Map Pack 3 Pub Raid

I do like the woods on that map. Getting to land is a pain, but once you've established a beach head or whatever, those woods skirmishes and the bridge point can be fun.
